Windows 10

Yeah everyone keeps on saying about the improvements but what are these.. and about the security. Win7 should be as secure as 8 or 10, because thats why we have the updates.

Now dont get me wrong here, I really want a new OS too, because yeh win 7 is getting on a bit now. But Im not just going to have a OS because its the lasted and greatest (umm maybe not the greatest).

But this is the thing everybody wants the latest stuff thats out and thinks it must be better, but is this really the case here?

Do some research, this is a few years old but still valid,

It might not be at the forefront of most people's minds when choosing an OS, but protection from security threats like malware is definitely a big deal. Microsoft wants you to know: Windows 8 is the most secure version of Windows ever.

21 times more secure than Windows XP, in fact, and 6 times more secure than Windows 7.

That's probably not a big surprise given how long hackers have had to find vulnerabilities and and target those OSes; Windows XP is 12 years old and Windows 7 is 4 years old, compared to the one-year old Windows 8. I mean, Windows 8 is just an infant.

Besides that, though, Windows 8 does come with more security features. Chris Hallum, Senior Product Manager for Windows outlines those benefits in this blog post. Secure Boot, for example, prevents malware from starting as the system loads. Windows 8 also supports a new type of drive called encrypted hard drives, as well as Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0. The upcoming Windows 8.1 update will add more security features.

You want to stay on 7 fine but don't kid yourself it is secure as Win8.1/10.

Regardeless be interesting to see what you do when Win7 comes to EOL and follows XP.

but I so want a new OS and Im still hopeing win10 is going to come good but Im not having high hopes for it, as I dont want to stick with win7 for another 3-4yrs if possible

Install a 3rd-party start menu if you don't like the default UI. Most of the charms bloat can be disabled using a registry tweak.

Similar software and tweaks will be available for Windows 10 if Microsoft doesn't nail the start menu customisation aspect.

Exactly, you can also have 8.1 boot straight to old desktop avoiding Metro for the most part, also I know a few that use Start8 or something similar,

I'm sure any Win7 user could use Win8.1 above with no issues, unless they are just 100% lazy  .

Win10 we don't know what will be the default Start Menu until it's RTM,however KIA is right ,you can bet probably be third party options available, personally that is not an issue for me since there will be plenty of options in that department sooner or later.

So what are these updates doing? You shouldn't believe everything what you read, its just to get people to wrorry and upgrade.... Its like reading what the papers say about the weather, its all rubbish. But I dont believe for 1 second that windows 7 is any less secure then windows 8 is, not with all the updates ms brings out every month anyway.

Does microsoft actually say windows 7 is any less secure then 8/8.1?

I dont see the point of upgrading if your going to modify the UI to get it behaving the same as before. If you have to mod windows, it cant be as good as the previous version, or ppl are set in there ways and dont really want to change. But there you go "Its the latest and greatest, but we dont like how it works".... Ummmm something is wrong there, dont you think?

Windows 7 SP1 went into the extended support phase a couple of weeks ago. It's critical security updates only, no non-security related hotfix support unless you purchase it with an EA agreement in the next couple of months.

Yes Microsoft have said so,you also forget both Win8.1 and 10 have better future support then 7,mainstream support for 7 has already ended earlier this month,it's now on extended support, don't forget updates 8 and 10 get as well,as to modding UI you don't need to ,it's only for those users that can't adapt to change,we all know plenty of those around,ie those still hang up on Win7 for example.

Upgrading OS is more then just UI,obviously you have not bothered to do any research and just finding very poor excuses.

I have used both Win8 and Win7 from day one just like Vista,XP,2K,98SE,95, can go back further if you want,I based most of my facts on personal usage, research etc, obviously plenty of websites to back my argument up.

Yeah, just because ms is basically forcing us to upgrade,, its like with their directx trick again. Anyway everyone has their own opinions,, But I think if you have to mod the very basics of windows to make it easier to use, then its no good.. but thats just me, but I could be wrong.

Anyone desperate to get Aero Glass back (though seriously, if non-transparent window bars are a deal-breaker for you with OS choice then you're doing something wrong), there's this in the works.

***edit***

Yeah, just because ms is basically forcing us to upgrade,, its like with their directx trick again.

And not even charging for it as well. Damn that evil Microsoft! Damn them to hell!

You are not forced, can go Linux or stay on Win7 until EOL.

I have been upgrading since DOS 6.22 days,as a PC gamer comes with the territory especially hardware upgrades,OS upgrade is not a big deal because it's pretty cheap compared to other upgrades and lasts awhile.

It's only PC gaming that keeps me on Windows, otherwise would be on Linux for good but then that's my choice.

:)

I remember all the big fuss over lack of Start Menu for Win8 especially by Win7 users etc,now Win10 is going in the right direction and bringing one back and they still moan, some users are never happy and as they say " you can't please them all" .

One thing I've learned over the decades they will always find something, just glad I'm so damn adaptable in Operating Systems even in my very old age :) .

The new folder icons are awful, quite frankly off putting in the latest build.

Some are a bit shonky, but then it is a preview build and not even a particularly far along one. Lots of time for polish once the major stuff is closer to being finished.

Ok Here i go
I am far from a expert on any version of windows but have used them all apart from windows 10. I currently run windows 7 myself but use my brothers pc daily which runs windows 8.1. Now after using 8.1 i can personally say that it looks better and more modern than any earlier versions of windows in my opinion and the person i keep seeing in this thread basically ****ging off both 10 and 8 really has no clue even going as far as dissing windows 10 for not being able to change transparency on the window borders(just omg really!) Not only that but almost trying to convince others that because its different its bad and they should change thier opinion on it. I was quite shocked to how this poster came across in thier attitude and flabbergasted when i heard from my brother that this poster was trying a preview build and that the full version will not be available for many months. How somebody can make statements like this poster did after trying a early preview build for a few days is just laughable. Anyway i was glad to hear that windows 10 will be a free upgrade and i for one will be upgrading my win 7 as soon as the full version is available. To the other so called expert(that they think they are on many things) You stick in the dark ages with your stone age pc.

You'll get the latest version of DX for free if you upgrade.

How will the free upgrade work does anyone know?. I have a full retail windows 7 Home Premium product code, will you register that code with Microsoft to change it to Windows 10?. I take it will not work with oem product codes?

Nobody knows. But I expect it will be fine with OEM codes because that's how the majority of people get their Windows license.

If you upgrade windows 7 x64 oem to windows 10 x64 oem do you loose the windows 7 x64 licence?. I'm more interested to test the public rc, i wonder when is that out to test drive for free?.
