Windows 10

Linux can run almost anything that Windows has with varying degrees of success / failure

There is somethign called WINE in Linux and I suggest you check it out.

There is also a great thing called PLAYINLINUX that many distros have, and this is a frotn end for WINE ( pretty much ) and it allows yuou to install and run a hell of a lot of Windopws games from within Linux.

I have it on my Linux Laptop alongside my Steam Games and they all run brilliantly in Linux. To be fair, I have a few things that dont and some that dont as well as they could do, but on the whole I have very very few that dont do good as opposed to the ones that do, and I even have a few things that seem to run better under WINE than they do under Windows itself, so...

Give it a look at least, but remember that its not simply a click and go thing... It may require tweaking to get right.

No other OS runs games half as well as windows does. Otherwise gamers would have switched away from it years ago.

Gaming support and domains/networking are why windows is still the most popular OS for desktops. They just do it better and more user friendly :/

You can even get the normal windows update back by using this editing the registry. Microsoft must want the updates to be left on in the preview builds.

To bring it back the ms update follow this steps in registry editor:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate\UX]
"IsConvergedUpdateStackEnabled"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate\UX\Settings]
"UxOption"=dword:00000000

Now Windows update is back in Control panel and you can configure which updates to install and which to hide.

I hope so too. It's just funny that we're getting excited about getting features back that win8 took away, tho :p

Whoever decided that the "flat" look of win8 looked nicer than Aero, really should have gone to Specsavers :p

Yeah I cannot believe people say win8 looks nicer then 7. Eveything in 8 is big and clunky, but 7 is elegant. Or you could say windows 8 and 10 is naked, win7 is dressed up lol

No they didn't focus Windows 8 mainly on tablets. I don't think you understand the implications of what that even means.

And people say MS didn't target windows 8 for the tablet industry. Of course they did, I remember tablets were the big thing just before windows 8 came on the market, so of course MS wanted to focus windows 8 mainly for tablets/touch screen devices.

You could argue in the old days desktop PC had no competition, modern times it has to compete with smart phones, tablets etc to name a few,Win8 was designed to handle ALL types of hardware,Win10 is a continuation/refinement of Win8 etc..

Funny how some PC users have short memories,I remember when there was no tablets or smart phones etc,how times have changed so you can't blame Microsoft for covering all possible hardware in their newest Operating Systems.

Their still doing win10 mainly for the tablets, but making win10 a fraction more compatible for the desktop users, but not by much.

Wrong again, modern Operating System from 8 onwards is designed to handle all types of modern hardware, the old PC desktop OS is from the dinosaur age where it was on its own,PC desktop is only small part of the market in today's modern age, some users forget that.

I can remember when there were complaints that the buttons on win7 were too small to use on phones. So instead of targeting win8 for the desktop user mainly, it was on the phones, tablets ect, but had the desktop user in mind. but us the desktop user got a tad pushed out in windows 8

I feel this is the case in 10 too, yeah MS has slightly made win10 more user friendly for desktop users, but not by much.

Yes, this is currently true, however, I will also argue it out.

For example, I have a fairly huge list of games on my Steam account and a great many of those games also run just fine in Linux.

I have 2 fairly decent Laptops that both have a copy of my steam stuff on, and one is running Windows 8.1 and the other is running Linux. I currently have Kubuntu 14.10 however, I have mostly been on MiNT. Makes no real differece.

The thing is that when I compare the games on each laptop with each other as to which one plays the games better, there is ZERO difference.

The Windows one has Intel 4600 and nVidia 870 Graphics and the Linux one has ATI 5780 and so there will be the differences there, but other than that, to argue that Windows is better, is simply wrong.

OPf course there is also no doubt that the number of games that Windows has compared to Linux, is oceans apart, but the gap is closing VERY quickly and again, when you consider that SteamOS is also available, and that games on SteamOS all run on Linux ( I think I have seen one or two that dont ) again this is also closing that gap.

Now, with the games that I have played with PlayonLinux, I have, as I have clearly stated, had various levels of success and failure and so yes, I fully accept that Windows is the best option, but to say that its the ONLY option, is simply wrong. All the games that I want to play on it, I have thankfully managed to get working and to get working mopre than well enough for me to not worry about it.

Dawn Of War and all its Family, UnReal and UnReal Tournament, Quake and Doom and all their family of games I have had running and they all run without a single glitch ( in as much as I have tested them ) and so for me. there is absolutely ZERO reasons to stick with Windows at all, and the same could be said for a whole load of people if they actually gave Linux a fair shot and actually spent some time with it, then they could see if they liked or disliked it.

But again, you say "Otherwise, gamers would have switched away from it years ago!"... The thing is, that many have... There are thousands of people who used to use a PC to play games and now they have their XBOX or PlayStation. They have left the PC in the Hundreds of Thousands. Irritatingly, my son and pretty much all of his mates have all left their PCs to play games on their XBOXes. If you ask almost any gamer these days the PC rarely comes up compared to the number of XBOX or PS users, and its the same when you look in teh shops for games... The XBOX and the PS have rows upon rows of shelves of their games and the PC section is often a handful in that far corner over there!

the tablets and consoles are where the money's at at the moment and I cant see that changing anytime soon,, its like CD players vs mp3 players or analogue vs digital radio. Microsoft has to go where they can make the biggest profit and thats sadly isn't with the desktop user anymore.

As I stated in the old days desktop PC was king of the castle, times have very much changed, also Microsoft also has investment in those modern hardware like tablets, smart phones,Xbox etc so you could very much argue it makes sense to have one very versatile OS that does it all and just improve on it from time to time,Win95 to Win7 was really the last of the so called PC desktop OS.

Nothing lasts forever, some users learn that the hard way.

Everything evolves ie from hardware to software over the years so nothing really new or surprising.

It would be good if ms could make different versions of windows, instead of trying to balance everything in to one, as we are getting the bad end of the deal, we have to make do with more of a tablet/phone OS than a desktop OS

thats because of the digital model. It's been well documented PC gaming has been growing significantly in the last few years and outstrips the consoles in revenue still. Would you like to apply that same test to linux gamers? comparison of store space, overall numbers etc?

Because the Steam survey from december 14 says linux users are 1.10% (which actually dropped from previous figures) keeping in mind this is Linux's main hope for games and I'd bet most of those dual boot.

and so for me. there is absolutely ZERO reasons to stick with Windows at all, and the same could be said for a whole load of people if they actually gave Linux a fair shot and actually spent some time with it, then they could see if they liked or disliked it.
ten year old games play as they would on windows. why not just play them on windows and take advantage of the wider catalogue there as well?

I have thankfully managed to get working and to get working more than well enough for me to not worry about it.
So you had to faff around to get it to work and you were unsure as to whether they would?

there is ZERO difference.
so why would you swap? All you've said is it works similarly with a bit more work, less choice and you are joining such a niche at the moment that you have to rely basically on one vendor to fulfil all of your needs whilst its main benefit (its free) has basically been taken away by win 10's offer?

It would be good if ms could make different versions of windows, instead of trying to balance everything in to one, as we are getting the bad end of the deal, we have to make do with more of a tablet/phone OS than a desktop OS
but the desktop OS is still there? I haven't seen metro since win 8 came out.

Having too many versions would probably cause confusion for the consumer, also more headaches including time and resources for Microsoft in bug fixing/updates for all those different versions.

To be fair Win8.1(with or without Start Menu depending on user in question) and Win10 work really well as a desktop PC so I don't understand the issue.

I use my 8.1 and even 10 like I did on Win7 ,however 8.1/10 are just more versatile end of the day with more features.

We are getting a good deal being honest, free upgrade, versatile OS,I don't see the issue especially since it works fine even as a desktop OS.

Oh no, I agree, but I was mostly replying to the claim that Windows is better than Linux for gaming, and I feel that this is NOT true.

As I said, the games that were on steam that were for both Windows and Linux, the games were the same, and the games that were for Windows only, its those that I had to sometimes faff about with. But only sometimes... The vast majority simply played just fine.

I agree with you almost entirely, but you are missing my point.

Oh, and as for the statement of 10 year old games, again they are only the ones I care about as they are the games I just liked to play... I have also done much more up to date games... BF4, Saints Row, COD Ghosts and a few opthers all played just great, and required no piddling about.

Im running stupidly old games on windows 7, its quite cool.

Im running Command & Conquer, Command & Conquer - Red Alert, Crusader 1&2, Doom 1&2, Duke Nukem 3D, Dungeon Keeper, Hidden & Dangerous, warcraft 1&2. Plus a few more besides

But I must say the dos games look pretty awful on a 28" screen as the pixels are huge..

I bet it does, I played theme hospital on origin as it was free and that was really bad! lol

No they didn't, you clearly don't understand what you're saying when you say they "mainly" targeted it at tablets.
