Windows 10

Incoming moaning...

I just did a complete fresh install of Windows 10 on one of my systems - first time I've done a complete fresh install in awhile...

What a ******* ball ache - so much to skip, defer or fill out with useless information/settings just to get past it so I can disable later, spent a good hour plus then disabling or uninstalling features, etc. only for half the time Windows 10 to randomly decide there was an incompatibility and try to reset settings because half an hour later or so it had decided to launch the installation/modification of something in the background like Skype, etc.

Got everything finally up and running with all drivers installed and then bam unresponsive start menu! and constant notification sound (seems Windows 10 doesn't like having a WiFi adapter disabled - probably have to disable some Wireless related service somewhere).

I mean seriously... absolute amateur **** show. I can't believe people defend this OS.

Oh and file explorer still looks like an aborted mess - for some reason I had kind of started to ignore it but doing a fresh install and going back and forth from the downloads folder to sort drivers, etc. had me constantly using it.

EDIT: Oh and now back to my main Windows 7 desktop after spending the last few hours messing about with that - so nice to not have to look at that hateful UI.

:D

Windows 8 was better than this apart from its start menu.

Annoying thing is - this installation boots almost instantly... WTF - I hate how varied Windows 10 is in that regard. Aside from some background busyness for a few moments after the desktop has booted sometimes it is literally 1 second from swapping from the BIOS to the login screen every time. Most of my other installations it is random from around 5 seconds to a minute or more depending on what Windows decides it is doing.

This is fascinating - messing about with a couple of setups - if I use USB media I made a few months back (think 1909 but I'd have to check that) and then update it Windows 10 takes a good few seconds to boot and every boot up is pretty random duration. If I use the 20H2 media I made today - boots almost instantly every time to the login screen. Weird.

What a pain in the rear OS though - also cleaned out and doing a fresh install of the Windows 10 dual boot on my gaming PC possibly to play Cyberpunk and just everything feels so awkward and 1 step forward, 2 steps back - messing about for instance trying to get sound properly setup I get so far in the new control panel UI then hit a brick wall, then have to dive into the options to find the old control panel applet for the advanced sound options, mess about there get things setup as they should be, then Windows 10 has a bit of a fit and doesn't like something so I have to mess about and Google the problem until I find what it is taking an exception to and mess about avoiding that.

I am so sticking with Windows 7 as my primary OS as long as I can.

Not weird at all - Microsoft might have fixed something with it's media. :p

It isn't the media - it is the install once it is finished and all drivers setup, etc. if I use older media and then update - it takes around 5x longer to go from the BIOS handing off to the login screen.

I've tried it now on 2 different machines - if I use my older install the OS boots about normal for Windows 10 in my experience while if I use the 20H2 media I just created for some reason the boot up times are much quicker - though once I installed the sound card drivers it slowed a bit :(

Was trying to do some benchmarking earlier on a Windows 10 install and not getting the performance I should... surprise surprise the updates service busy in the background so paused that which for a miracle stopped it but then shortly after getting impacted performance again only to find Microsoft Compatibility Telemetry process sitting there eating 20% CPU!

Just got my first Windows system in a long long time, and need some help...

I'm unable to install Chrome - When I go to the download page on Google, no matter how many times I hammer the download button, nothing happens... I read this may be because my Windows 10 is in S mode, but when I check it says Windows 10 Home.

Also, I cannot get onto the Windows store, it just errors out on me (can't remember the exact code), just comes up grey. I've tried running the fix tool from within Windows Update, but had no joy.

My Chromebook has been so simple for all these years

Just as a test are you able to download and install Firefox? and/or then install Chrome from that if necessary.

If it is a pre-built system you might find there is bundled anti-virus or firewall software blocking stuff.

Thanks, I'll have a look when I get home. Pre built, yes

Your work around worked! Got Chrome through Firefox. Very odd.

Still not got the store working, but not too concerned

Finally 20H2 is here for my laptop.

Ignoring for a moment the security/support side of it I really don't understand why anyone would use Windows 10 - I've removed and done a fresh install on the Windows 10 dual boot on my gaming PC (which has largely sat there unused except for overclocking to avoid corrupting my Windows 7 install) as I'm thinking about playing Cyberpunk and doing a bit of dev stuff with HDR - so far from a smooth experience even with a fresh install from 20H2 media it is unreal - so many annoyances and features I have to go through the motions of just to get past them then disable later, etc. and then I setup some of the stuff I normally do so as to not be booting between OSes constantly when I'm doing certain stuff - the OS offers absolutely nothing over my Windows 7 install functionality wise while often being annoying and the few areas that potentially would be an improvement such as the start menu are badly let down - I mean the start menu doesn't even have proper group management in 2020 - nearly 2021!!! (I mean seriously whom ever is working on that area of the OS - or apparently not - needs to pull their head out their behind and do some actual useful work).

Not really a new revelation to me as such but I don't usually use Windows 10 for much of the day to day stuff I do on my main two Windows 7 systems and trying to do some of it is reinforcing just how lacking Windows 10 is when it comes to improving over 7 and how in many ways the quality of life experience is lesser and far from where it should be.

What make / model is your laptop - was the issue conexant sound drivers? Thanks, Mel

Asus Zenbook 14, it was a thunderbolt 3 issue that I had.

Security and Support is one of the main reasons to use Windows 10. When windows 7 come out people said exactly the same thing. I have seen these types of comments for 20 years now and it doesn't show signs of slowing down anytime soon.

If you want to use a different OS use a different OS.

You always get people who are set in their ways/resistant to change and find excuses not to move on or have an irrational hatred of anything new (personally doesn't bother me) but I'm not like that with OSes - I jumped straight on 7 and was in from early testing with 10 - some aspects of 10 would really be an advantage for me if they were implemented properly and there wasn't the other annoyances. I actively, though begrudgingly, use around a dozen systems with Windows 10 on but keep my main 2 systems on 7.

Unfortunately it is getting harder to not use 10 - for instance my bank, and rightly so, are making people jump through hoops to continue using Windows 7 to access their services but unfortunately it isn't like using 10 actually is that big a security improvement.
