Windows 10

If MS lock out pirates in some way then why give out to them free in the first place? That is just pointless, they need to offer it to everyone for free regardless if it is legit or not. Once everybody is on the same OS then the new App Store will most likely come in to its own and that will be where MS will make their money (imho).

It is probably costing them millions of dollars in RnD to combat piracy which is money quite frankly better spent elsewhere.

Maybe think of it more like a demo, people try it out and test it and realize it's not as bad as 8 and in there minds will get more people into buying it then they otherwise would.

They also want to promote the windows store which isn't available at all on windows 7 so that could be another driving factor into getting people onto windows 10,they can't afford to wait another 3 years until the next release to see if this version will work or not,the days of releasing major OS updates is coming to an end.

Also, it's been said a few times already - the more people on the same os = better for business and the end user.

MS has always used piracy as part of its marketing strategy.

There is a lot of really very good "Open source" stuff out there these days and MS realises that if they make it too hard/too expensive they will lose out to it (See Limux)

MS Office ( pre activation versions) was laughably easy to copy and I suspect it was quite deliberate. MS went after business users using dodgy copies but wanted as many home users (Who would never normally have bought it) to use the product as possible in order to make it the "Default" software that everybody was comfortable using.

I am sure that "activation" has driven the development of open/libre office for use not just by home users but also by smaller (or even larger) businesses to an extent that has damaged MS's bottom line.

It has certainly driven the price of the legit product down (IIRC full Office 98 was around £500 in "Real terms" it is less than a quarter of that today. All thanks to piracy.)

Far from damaging the legit products. the competition from piracy has driven MS etc to make even better products in order to maintain an edge over the open source products. Can you imagine what Office/Windows would be like today if a really effective anti piracy technology had been developed in the mid 90's! we would probably still be on DOS!

I haven't used MS office in my business for some years now

I love Piracy! yes really!

"Home taping" did NOT kill music. There is more music than there ever was and it is cheap too. Piracy keeps costs down, apparently without damaging quality.

I was looking through a friends tape collection the other day. she had some dance tapes from the 90's. A single tape with 10 or so tracks on it was over a tenner! That was a lot of dosh back then. the internet has driven prices way down since then. the same goes for movies. there is no evidence that the music/movie industry is suffering and there is no shortage of quality products)

To my mind. probably the biggest threat to MS today is SteamOS. I like windows and, despite grumbles about fixing things that arnt broken when new OS's come out, I am looking forward to win 10. BUT when I think about it, the only reason why I "Need" windows is because my games need it.

I already use Libre office/firefox/etc for my business and have done for some years

There will be millions of other users in exactly the same position.

MS will be giving Win10 away free because, realistically, they cannot afford to charge for it.

I for one would have been happy if MS had done a pre order deal like they did with W7, I can't remember what I paid for it but it was not very much. Bought it on release and have been using it daily ever since. To think W10 is free is almost to good to be true?

Right enough nonsense. Anyone on Build 10041? Seems good but I'm getting the occasional lockup. Thinking it has to do with the 349.90 nVidia drivers which from what I can see will install every time you reboot, no matter if you uninstall them or not.

How is it responding for other people?

Start menu seems to be bugging out for me fairly often, Click it & all I get is the search bar.

The Asus Xonar drivers will install - just don't use the installer. I got mine working by browsing to one of the sub folders and right-click-->install on the .inf file. Works fine now.

Using the win8.1 beta driver btw.

If you need the details, let me know.

Buff

Mine install but I can't get any sound.

I had to turn the install timeout up to 1800seconds to get the latest Realtech HD audio drivers to update. First time I've had to do that!!

Apologies if these questions have been asked before but the thread is too big to try and sift through for the answers. :)

For those of us on Win7/8 will we be able to do a clean install or will it be upgrade only? Do we know what happens to our license keys when we do upgrade? By that i mean do we get a new key or will our existing Win7/8 key simply be unlocked to work with Win10.

Thanks :)

No official details about that yet.

I have a dedicated games PC should I be using Windows 10 TP to sort out any issues early on.

I don't like Windows 8 but I understand 10 is going to be essential.
