Windows 10

I'm not getting the 'Upgrade to W10' in my system tray on Windows 7 SP1 with all updates applied. WTF?

Just put together this batch file that does the 3 major fixes found in this thread...

As with any batch you download, anti-virus may flag it, just edit the file if you're unsure. It's a lot to read, but you should always have at least a minimal amount of understanding of what you're running before doing so anyway...

It has plenty of protections in place to protect your PC, but please read the first screen.

Try the file guy from Microsoft Answer forum created batch contained all fixes you can try out each that would trigger to pop up Windows 10 icon in system tray.

Sorry if this is a) obvious or b) has already been asked and answered but can I accept the Windows 10 free upgrade but simply go back to using Windows 7 if I don't like it?

Its been asked, but I don't think we have had an answer from Microsoft yet.

I seem to remember someone mentioning it was possible, but no details on how.

I'd assume no until you hear otherwise. But if you want to try out Windows 10 the Preview is freely available to try now. Whop it on and see what you think.

Yep. All other updates installed too.

Had the same issue as you Kissenger. I done it by finding the installed file. Go to: Local disk C > Windows > System 32 > GWX (If installed that's where it will be) and just click on the windows icon that says GWX next to it, that should bring up the icon on your taskbar.

Yep, popped up on my W8 machine last night...

I'll wait will X-mas, see what the general opinion is of the upgrade and OS, and then take it as long as the upgrade is smooth and faff free!

Thanks. That did it.

What do you need to do in order to get the Upgrade prompt on a Domain/Enterprise PC?

My IT Administrator has told me I can do what I wan't with my work laptop, just don't come crying to him when it breaks :p. But KB3035583 isn't available on my Windows Updates list.

Why is everyone is such a rush to upgrade? Especially on a laptop, which surely can be even more driver specific etc?

Why not wait 3-4 months, check other upgrades (on the same make/model) have gone OK, then do it?

Laptop and pc are no different when it comes to drivers....

As I'm on the windows 10 TP I'll "upgrade" as soon as possible, like a lot of people in this thread.

Also if everyone waited for someone else to prove it works OK no one would upgrade.:D

For the same reason I've been running the Windows 10 Preview for months, had Windows 8, 7, Vista, even Longhorn Beta's and Alphas running back in the day. I'm just like that.

I'm going to be the guinea pig for the company :).

I can't take the laptop off the domain, so is there another way to get the update?

If you cant remove domain. You have to wait for release then manually run the update, from within windows update. I assume that means w10 will show up as an optional update.

I'm taking a punt and assuming you haven't got kids? - ie: You have that much coveted thing called spare time :)

Fingers crossed it goes smoothly :)

I'm noticing a few older apps (like 3D Mark 11 for example) that seem not to want to run on Windows 10. Is there something significantly different about W10 compared to W7/W8 ?

If anyone still can't get the update to come up for them this is the thing that finally worked for me.

Its a cmd line tool that takes you through a super simple set of steps to check your pc can take the update, that you have the correct update applied and then tries to trigger it.

Nothing else worked for me but this did first time.

Am I the only one who doesn't see the point in the 'free' upgrade to Windows 10 - am I missing something here?

Extended support for Windows 7 ends in 2020 right? So I know I'm going to get critical patches until that time for Windows 7. If I use my Windows 7 licence to upgrade to Windows 10, am I not effectively converting that licence into a Windows 10 licence, i.e. my Windows 7 discs will become useless.

I read an article on Extreme Tech where it says you will be able to do clean installs with your upgrade licence onto the same device, and that, to me, is surely a step backwards, considering the amount of times hardware changes in our PCs?

It sounds like my retail Windows 7 licence will be turned into a Windows 10 OEM licence is what I'm trying to say.

Or am I just making up 'faffage'?!
