Windows 10

I've had the notification for weeks (and signed up) but no sign of Windows 10 downloading...do I need to do anything?

Meh no matter what i do i simply don't get the reservation, followed the link a couple of pages ago, ran scripts and all sorts.

My task scheduler is completely borked though so i'm tempted to do a new install and see how it goes.

well Windows 10 didnt have the option to set colour title bars for windowed programs.

I have found a fix.

Step 1: Go to C:\Windows\Resources\Themes
Step 2: Copy the "aero" folder and paste it into the same Themes directory. Confirm the User Access Control request (UAC) and skip for all MSS files when prompted.
Step 3: Rename the "aero - Copy" folder to "windows" and confirm the UAC request if prompted.
Step 4: Go into the "windows" folder you just created and rename aero.msstyles to windows.msstyles. Confirm the UAC request.
Step 5: Go into the En-US folder and rename aero.msstyles.mui file to windows.msstyles.mui.
Step 6: Hit the back button twice and return to the Themes directory. Copy the aero file and place it on your desktop. Rename it to windows and open it with notepad.
Step 7: Under the [VisualStyles] section, find: Path=%ResourceDir%\Themes\Aero\Aero.msstyles
Step 8: Replace it with: Path=%ResourceDir%\Themes\windows\windows.msstyles
Step 9: Save it and then double click the file to enable colored titlebars!

Then once you have done this you need to run this:
%windir%\System32\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL desk.cpl,Advanced,@Advanced

Then you can set your colours etc like previous versions of windows.

My desktop hasn't had the notification but my laptop has. It appeared sometime last week without me having to do anything. I'm guessing that MS are rolling it out in batches to stagger the load on release day.

I wonder if windows 7 theme file will work in windows 10 to give the aero effect I am going to try it in a vm shortly. Probably not but worth a try. Not sure how theme files are related throughout the system.

I think it will work, its kinda what I did

I hope they fix this, there may be a workaround but it appears messy if the final release is like this which would be a shame considering how sexy its starting to look.

On another note, will anyone else be buying a licence, I know I can get it for free but its kind of annoying for me because my 8.0 licence is an upgrade which I ended up finding out the hard way and its 8.0 so its a pain to install, I must admit I ended up just torrenting 8.1. It seems to me since I'm a home builder (much like everyone on here I suspect) I should buy the licence so I can use it on any machine... Mind I might just get the free one then buy the licence when I get a new mobo, probably be cheaper by then?

Edit to add, I got the notification even on my pirated 8.1 believe it or not!

Quick Win10 OC question.

Still using Win XP on a 2004 build. Done me proud but it can only surf web sites and play music etc. Elite Dangerous was backed on it on KS within days of the Ks going live. So back to wanting a PC high end-ish rig from OC to be ordered this winter. Changed days slowly got five games on steam on sale and will get a few more in the next sale. But five games is a start lol. In my day you went to a shop or online order to get a disk through the post. :)

If you buy a build from OC do you get it just installed or will you get a disk copy of Win10 as well to do a fresh install?

Not having a spare machine I'm willing to have a possibly unstable beta OS on, I've not played with Win 10 much until I put the latest Technical Release on a VirtualBox, and I'm quite impressed. The UI is just much more usable and understandable, despite the start menu looking like my wife's Nokia phone. I threw some weird programs at it, and it seems to handle them with no problem, and even things like Shark Codecs and Microsoft Money Sunset work.

The only thing I didn't like is edge forcing Bing search (and you can't change it yet), as they rated dodgy malware sites over the likes of the real Open Office site.

Otherwise, I can see my home machines switching to this fairly easily, especially at the £0 upgrade price. There's still a bit of weirdness here and there, but otherwise it's totally serviceable as an OS.

Those that are using windows 10 are you signing in with your hotmail account or a local account

Outlook as I like to have everything synced automatically :) I do the same on 8.1

Yep! Outlook.com account on mine too, it syncs to my Lumia 830 phone and HP Stream with my settings, passwords and favourites.

Plus my theme and wallpaper match on my Win10 desktop and Win8.1 tablet :)

Plus if I wipe and rebuild, it just reinstalls all my personal settings and Windows apps for me (still need to install the Desktop stuff myself)
