WINTER 2018/2019 - Chat thread!

Still no real model agreement for the potential cold weather over the next few days - hope I'm wrong but with potential disruption of the jet stream little more of a tease in the short term and hints of something a bit further off and general setup it is looking like any real wintery weather is going to be pushed well into Feb if it materialises.

1” snow here, will be enough to cause chaos later as a lot of the roads haven’t been treated.

Sir Grits-a-Lot was out on the roads out here this morning, but still planning to leave a little late to avoid the inevitable chaos!

Models today going for significant snow cover across the whole country and into the negative double figures temperature. Lets see what actually happens!

Sustained cold temperatures
Cold and snowy weather is expected to dominate the rest of January with Arctic air masses influencing the British Isles. From Tuesday, very cold air is forecast to extend across the country, with heavy snow showers giving significant accumulations and disruption in some areas. By later next week, a bitter easterly wind is likely, maintaining cold weather for many days ahead.

UK Outlook for Saturday 2 Feb 2019 to Saturday 16 Feb 2019:

The cold weather will continue as we head through the first half of February. There is a greater risk of seeing snow at lower levels as well as on the hills. Some drier and brighter periods are possible in the northwest, but in the south there is a chance of weather fronts approaching which bring a risk of rain, sleet and perhaps significant snow at times.

UKMO upgrade on the 12z following the path of ECM/GFS.

This would put not just the East into the freezer but large swathes of the UK.

Some of the charts for 7-8 days out are phenomenal, and the continued theme going into February is excellent.

I think if we are going to see anything memorable from this it will be into Feb - too much through late Dec/Jan the meat has been hovering at the end of the output and never getting any closer.
