Winter 2022/23 - It's too cold :(

Spare a thought for me and my colleagues. IT’s perishing at work. Heating has broken on the shop floor. Then the automatic doors don’t close at all. I’m wearing five layers of clothes on top, leggings under trousers plus fingerless gloves. I’m still freezing.

I come home from work every day with my chest hurting and crying. Warmth helps a great deal with my pain and breathing.

Work are more concerned about Christmas than our wellbeing. I will be given a 3rd different inhaler for asthma later this week. So it’s the blue, pink and mint green.

I can’t tolerate this much further. Why should I go to work to make myself unwell? The physical pain is affecting my mental health too.

If any colleague phones in sick with respiratory issues, they should not be disciplined or get a strike off (3 sicknesses goes to disciplinary) as it’s not their fault!

Employers should show a duty of care towards the health and safety of colleagues. Mine isn’t.

Seriously looking for a new job as at least with a job the building will be better heated and can wear what I want.
I dont know how disciplinary's for taking time off work sick are still legal.

It's also a fact that councils are too lazy to grit unless absolutely necessary.

I remember cycling to work in the morning in Bristol and came off my bike on a small roundabout. By the time I managed to pick myself up and get my bike on to the pavement, another cyclist had come round the corner and had done the exact same thing.

I remember getting to work, where quite a number of people cycle, and so many people were complaining about coming off their bikes because of how icy it was and nothing had been gritted.

Very true. When I lived back in France near the mountains we legally had to put winter tyres on the car in the winter funnily enough. It made a huge difference, but also people learned to drive in snowy / wintery conditions. Heck even RWD cars were able to drive up hill and round corners without crashing! That said the council used to plough and grit the roads regularly anyway. It's just part of having seasons. Even many buildings had a dedicated tyre shed for winter tyres. Not sure if this still exists but I know my family certainly still whack on winter tyres when the temperature drops.

I know that there's an argument of cost but certainly in that part of the world the value obtained vs the cost of implementation was significantly higher. I.e. people able to go to work, shops, support the local economy etc... Albeit this was before online shopping and the monolithic impact that the internet has now days.

As much as I love 25C+ weather, the beach and the sunshine, a crisp winter day is lovely when it's not grey and dull. Wish we were better geared for it in this country though.

Hope you weren't too badly injured. Having come off a motorbike a few times because of steels or oil or even black ice is not a fun experience. I feel your pain (literally).

Name and shame the company. Surely you could sue the company if they caused you to become severely ill?

Many employers do this as in the past, used to get people taking the **** and ring up sick every time they got a bit ******

My ex’s employer introduced this policy after the same 5 people rang in sick on payday each time.

I personally think the current policy is unfair. As could have a healthy 2-3 years then an unlucky year and get punished for it.

Time to look for a new job.

Was watching Russian winter videos last night - These guys with three paraffin blow lamps under a truck then wrap plastic sheet round front of truck to keep warm in -took ages to de-ice it before it would start.
Certainly not for me.

Its getting even colder mid week may even see a frost by wed/thurs!

Oh I remember that back in the days when we used to get ice and snow in this country one bad winter they were reporting on the news HGV drivers were lighting fires under the diesel tanks to thaw them out and not to do that because well basically they'll explode.

Sorry about your health but there are plenty of people who work outdoors even at this time of year. 4 coats a very large scarf and a thinsulate woolly hat and as long as you keep moving its ok. Its standing around doing nothing thats the killer. In your situation though yeah I'd be looking for another job.

Hints of a PV split towards the end of current model runs - couldn't say what it might mean though - other than somewhere is likely to see extremes weather wise.

I wouldn't worry about what weather says - By tomorrow night the temps will be in high teens because tomorrow I am putting my winter wheels on - Spent all days setting them up -cleaning different wheel studs -pressure testing winter tyres -sorting out all tools needed.
I am doing this for nothing. :D

The line in there about people being urged to use their heating despite the rising prices.

How can you use what you can’t afford?
If I was in that horrible position, I would be turning the heating on and worrying about it later. Obviously if someone can't afford to top a meter up that is going to be grim.
