Winter Transfer Window 22/23

So this was rumoured a week or so ago and now this article has appeared...quite specific...aware its Daily Mail but its gaining momentum:

Surely he won't go there though. Could only see him in Europe but he needs to take a pay cut plus realise he may not play every game.

 Naby was very much a modern box to box midfielder at Leipzig
I didn't say otherwise, although I didn't watch enough of him at Leipzig to form much of an opinion either. He's never been that for us though. He's always been the main creative spark in our midfield 3 - the guy that we've looked to in midfield to thread passes into the final 3rd. That role within the side has been taken on by Thiago over the past couple of years. They're certainly not identical players - Keita is more attack minded than Thiago but for me their primary role within the side is the same.

From the little I've seen of Fernandez, he looks to be the same ball player type as Thiago and Keita but (and I could be wrong because I've not seem much of him) he seems more defensively minded than not just Keita but Thiago too. Maybe that's a slight tactical tweak we're looking at - having a 2nd more defensively minded midfielder to allow the 3rd midfielder to attack more.
Anyone else a bit wary of Amrabat after our 2002 foray into buying standout players from a surprise package from Africa at the world cup?
The worst thing with the Diouf signing was it wasn't a WC buy. By all accounts we had that deal all but signed before the WC kicked off but announced it the day after Senegal beat France, fearing somebody might gazump us. A lot of things went wrong for Houllier at the end of his spell but Diouf over Anelka was the catalyst. I think had we signed Anelka things could have been very different.

I personally don't think we should touch him just cause of his performance in world cup

I don't think we will need more than one midfielder regardless of whom that ends up being.

Keita needs to go, always injured never lived up to his hype. Ox likely to be off, Milner is aging.

Ox and Keita are gone. The only reason why they're still here is we couldn't shift them due to their wages. Who knows with Milner - there's always a chance of another 1 year deal and I wouldn't be against it tbh. His versatility and experience make him a handy sub to have with 10-15 mins to go in games and many scenarios.

Is this for financial or footballing reasons? I ask because they're very different types of player

Keita was meant to be the long term answer as our midfield playmaker but his inability to stay fit for more than 45 minutes has meant Thiago has been required to play far more than his body is capable of. Fernandez is very much that type of player and would provide the short term cover/competition for Thiago as well as being his long term successor.

Bellingham is much more box to box and we probably don't play with that type of player which is why I've always been slightly cautious of the 'Bellingham or nothing' chat over the last 12 months. I've no doubt we like him and want him but I think our interest is purely because of how good he is and you just find a way of fitting him into the side but I don't see it as an either or with Fernandez. Whether we can convince one or both to sign for us is of course another matter.
Financial. As I said before I cant see us splurging 100m on Enzo AND 100+m on Bellingham. Imo, it will be one or the other. I still reckon we will go for Amrabat plus either Enzo or Bellingham

And Bouba Diop! Who was less of a mess than Diouf, but still seemed very much too me us jumping the gun.

Don't get me wrong, as long as we've scouted Amrabat properly and are comfortable that he can recreate his form in the PL, he's worth a go.

We were looking at him with interest prior to the World Cup, so he's clearly someone we had some degree of interest in beforehand.

Ok. As I said before, I really don't think the financial side of things is as big a deal as many do. We see lots of clubs front load transfer spend and make up for it later. It's something we've done before too. If we can get both, I think we will but the challenge is convincing the players for me.

Salif Diou. Diop played for Fulham I think. And yea, he was a disaster but thankfully didn't cost much. We also signed Bruno Cheyrou that summer too who Houllier called the new Zidane. Turns out he wasn't.

Dont get me wrong , its not that I think we cant spend that much money, its more than I think we wont spend that much on 2 midfielders.

Any word on who Arsenal might look at with Jesus out? Trossard strikes me as a sensible shout. Proven in the PL, would be expensive but not earth shattering, and versatile enough to play when Jesus returns as well
