They're each specialised in a different way.
As far as I remember, 'raider' is fast, has plenty of laser energy, but lower shields and small cargo bay. Hauler has plenty of cargo space, vanguard has plenty of shields and laser energy but lower speed.
To be honest, the best thing to do would be to download a comparison chart showing all ship specs. It will make selecting a ship a hell of a lot easier.

think I need a larger ship soon, "easy" combat missions consist of a nova + centau/o-somthing (orca?) vs my nova raider!
was thinking of fixing up one of the falcons or novas I cap and using it as wing but they seem to die so easy!

the orca is a boron heavy transporter.
X3 is very heavy on the cpu and doesn't support multicore so its all about the ghz.

If you can get a Falcon Hauler or Falcon Sentinel and load it with full shielding and Energy Bolt chainguns they'll make a nice mess of the M6 even with the AI Flying.
In an M3 you should be able to take down an M6 and small escort if you are a good pilot
As an alternative to a heavily shielding Falcon, the Pirate Eclipse is a nice ship with good fire power, or if you can cap one - a Notus Hauler

Yeh, the Plasma Burst Generators are evil weapons! The Xenon fighters armed with Pulse Beam Emmiters are also very annoying - they'll rip your shields down in no time.
As to the Plasma generators - they tend to be most common on Pirate Blastclaws in my experience, so try and take these out before anything else, both the PBG and the PBE have around a km range, so below a lot shorter than most fighter weapons

Yep - what I tend to do is just assume a Blastclaw is armed with 4 PBG. and kill it as quickly as possible. They are a larger threat than an M6 for the most part.
Same happens with the Xenon, M3/M4 with PBE are a far more dangerous threat than a Xenon P.

No need to wait, the game is fully playable with the 2.1 patch. The only major problems that are fixed in the 2.5 patch wont come along until you have been playing for several days.

The Nova is a good ship, keep do the terran plot for awhile and they will give you a vidar one of the best M6's in the game. If you dont like the vidar finish the terran plot and get yourself a springblossom (ever wondered how powerful a M6 would be if it wasnt as slow as a snail, well this baby is fast. When i say fast i mean M5 speed fast)
