X4 Foundations

The pathfinding in this game is hilariously bad :( Just watching a Gorgon M frigate attempting to land on my Argon carrier.... 3 of them have already landed, but the forth has taken 5 minutes to not get anywhere near the right place! Egosoft really do need to work on this as its terrible.

@CaptainRAVE I’m about to start getting my standings up in the family systems and I’ve just read what you wrote on the Steam forums, I assume that’s you, about destroying civilian ships at the stations. Now as anything -15 shows up red for me do these criminal ships I need to destroy show up anything like red as well? I only ask as I’m red green colourblind and don’t want to balls my standings up.

Yes, a civilian ship will suddenly become a criminal ship and red. It generally happens soon after you are near a factory. I just keep cycling through enemy targets, it’s a bit of a pain as station security will appear red too. It just takes a bit of patience, but it gets quicker once you get the hang of it.

I’ll have to save before every ship just in case. I wish all game developers would factor in colourblindness.

Giving this whirl after playing Elite in VR for the past few years. Loved X3: Terran Conflict so thought'd I'd try and get back into the X Series. It's clearly changed a bit.

First things first, has anyone got a HOTAS working well with it? I can map buttons fine but the roll, pitch etc just seems, well, a bit clunky. Kinda seems on or off if that makes sense. Not sure if it's the characteristics of the starting ships or that's just how it is.

Any tips?

Yes I'm playing with a hotas fine, but it did take bloody ages and a lot of trial and error to get it setup for my tastes.

On a general matter:

Can someone explain the purpose/advantages of having ships docked in a capital(carrier/destroyer etc) to just have the ships assigned to them and just flying outside?

Also to @CaptainRAVE yes the dragon is so awesome, I got the level 3 chassis mod and a thruster me d for nearly 50% spin the thing is insane. What guns are you using out of interest?

Spent 50 mill on my first factory yesterday and I've already run out of money :D

Has anyone found that fleet following has now broken itself? I've got 10 destroyers that are in a circle formation around my Odysseus but travelling around they break up and stop randomly following even though they are set to and the only way to make them carry on is to set them a move order instead.

I set the fleet to defence and the fleet leader (Atlas) to protect position, say 10-15 km radius. They all scarper to a long distance coordinate but if you drag it to short locations they generally all stick to formation. Not ideal but it's the best setup I have found that offers some semblance of control.

Experimenting with armament settings also helps, but I still feel like I'm missing something obvious.

Yes, I haven’t though of that, another cue might be an audio one when the station announces it. I just cycled through all local enemies constantly and you will then hear something other than ‘station security’.

Carriers will keep the ships stocked, unsure about destroyers.

I’ve gone for all bolt which is hilarious, and quite blinding at times, to watch.

What factory have you built? Careful with patrol/protect position, my fleet of 10 destroyers wandered off when I wasn’t looking into a xenon defence platform. That was a costly moment and at a time when I didn’t have endless money.

That sounds nice, although I would prefer the cooling mods.

I use 2 Ion and 4 bolt.

Yes, I should put some ion in there.

If you can and want to, one of the Devs are presently in CohhCarnage twitch chat while he is playing the game. Their user name is @EGOSOFTOFFICIAL if you want to try and have a word with them about the above ?

I saw a fleet of HOP destroyers get annihilated by an ARG platform, but a fleet of Xenon Ps took one down with ease.

As for the factory, it's supposed to be a huge silicon refinery for all my miners. I wasn't precisely sure what I needed but it went something like this.

2 x L Docks
6 x M Docks
2 x L of all storage types
2 x L Containers
6 x Solar
2 x Meat
2 x Medicine
4 x Silicon
1 x Admin Centre
1 x Bridge

Quite a few defence rings.

I didn't buy the habitat blueprint as it was too expensive, but I'm going to need it, alongside a lot of other things. Logistical overview doesn't look good :D

Despite being a 5x5 plot, there was a few places where I can't expand and snap stuff into place. But on the whole I felt the whole thing was very well designed. Much better than those space sewer systems in X3.

Would builder drones have helped speed the process? It's about 1/3 complete and was going all day yesterday.

I have to admit I usually don't bother with habitats early game, very expensive for little return. I generally don't invest in defence much either other than a fully loadout on each factory itself, but then you can get away with that in most 'core' sectors.

Do you mean builder drones on the builder ship? The more builder drones the quicker your complex gets built. Of course you also need ware availability that in my experience is quite scarce early game, especially hull, turret and shield parts.

Yeah. I assigned one of my builder ships (Heracles?) which didn't have any builder drones. The assigned builder seems to be locked into the build command and I cannot change or do a drone exchange. Build command is permanently on critical.

It's still fairly quick considering, but what is becoming a pain is it's actually my boarding ship which has all my marines on it lol.

Are station defence rings not that good then? I tried to position them where they'd have good LOS.

They are good when needed, I just never get attacked being in a core system. If I do, the sector fleet always protects the station.

I take it there isn't any way to stop a "soft ivasion" - as in, when a friendly faction decides to setup a whole load of stations in your systems?

Other than shooting them and declaring war that is.

interger scaling is for pixel based games it has no effect on a game like x4. IS is ok i think if i switch from 1440p to 1080p but i use use my reshade profile i made instead as it smoothes jaggies miles better than ingame aa so ingame aa is off and ive made it more cinematic the lighting i think.

So I've just decided to look at taking over a Xenon controlled sector. Seems fairly empty so scouted with a paranid scout... found a few defence stations and solar stations and a few Ks... dropped two advanced satellites near the jump gate towards civilisation and moved my fleet through... Set up a circle formation with 12 Behmoth Destroyers around the collosus carrier... and then started to build a defense station by the gate, after a while the ks came to investigate the complete destruction of thier ships and got pounded.. the fleet is destroying everything.. I'm OOS while this is going on as its much better, especially against capital ships.. IS the ships just do random stuff :-(

Once the defense stations has been completed I'll move the nomad in to the system and secure the gate and slowly take over the sector... The Xenon own the 3 sectors and the only way out is through this gate so if I can control it then I should get 3 sectors to myself!
