Inevitable. They blew it with the Xbox one launch. Looks like they intend to make money from the software instead and stop having such a loss leader in hardware. There’s then zero reason to buy an Xbox.

There’s been very little reason to even upgrade from an Xbox one to series X. The series X should have been something kids wanted for Christmas, so few of my sons mates even have one. 95% of his school mates still use the the Xbox one. Why wouldn’t they? They should have cut ties to the previous generation with exclusive titles faster.

Can’t blame them for wanting to increase software sales after spending billions acquiring all those developers.

Have any of these rumours come from solid sources or is it all just pure speculation.

There's all sorts of stuff flying round at the moment. Will Xbox ditch the hardware and go third party, will they make the hardware but also licence the core spec to third parties to do their own hardware as well (like 3DO), will they bring future AAA(A) titles to PS5, will they go completely digital are just some of the things I've seen.

Very much sounding like a lot of Xbox exclusives will be going multiplatform. Makes sense when they've spent so much money on these big studios, and so much money developing big games but the Xbox is selling so badly. Their shareholders will want to maximise the money from those games.

It's been an obvious path for Microsoft for a while now they're primarily a software and services company

If Xbox left the hardware market, this is sad news for all gamers, it will be the start to the end of consoles altogether I feel, lets all look forward to a digital future, cheap digital games, rock solid cloud streaming. fun times....... not!

Why would it be the end when Sony and Nintendo are doing such big numbers? There is clearly a demand for consoles but that demand requires decent exclusives - MS got complacent.

If even a fraction of this is true...

  • Tim has heard that Call of Duty may not be coming to game pass.
  • Hardware sales have not met the projected sales and the CFO got spooked.
  • In the last three months of last year, they had consoles for $350 and no one cared.
  • Xbox One was more wanted than Series consoles.
  • They said the hardware is dead, and they are seeing declines in hardware year over year.
  • Game pass is unsustainable; the market they have is not enough to offset the cost.
  • Tim heard from someone at Microsoft that you may not like Xbox when they get Activision. They want ROI.
  • He heard that Xbox has an insane showcase with tons of games, but everyone is going to be saying asterisks.
  • The leaks happened because a Microsoft employee who didn't want this to happen leaked it, so there would be a public outcry.
  • Microsoft now has no problem buying more companies in the future if all games go to all platforms.
  • Tim thinks they will go all-digital, with ads on game pass  (pre-roll or at the end of a chapter e.g. Like a Dragon) and AI community managers.

Proper slap in the face for the die hard Xbox fanboys.. lol
