I had a think yesterday after I realised I had responded to this thread and one on TPU close together, and I have come to realise every game that I have played that has more than minor stuttering issues, every single time the stuttering is caused by texture streaming. No matter how new or old the game is.
Do you guys think we will ever get to the point we have no texture streaming (I think no as needs lots of VRAM), or is it just the case that we all hoping RTX IO and Direct Storage solve the problems.
Be good to see some videos to show what you're experiencing. Funnily resident evil and deathloop have far smoother frame latency than other games which don't use anywhere close to 10gb vram.
I see these kind of spikes in most games and have done with every pc setup of mine:
But going by DF, it probably just comes down to the game engines and the way they handle shader caching, not 100% sure though.
But yes, rtx Io/direct storage should change the game quite a bit when it comes to how we look at and measure all things vram.
Good video here on it:
Personally I found moving to 32GB RAM from 16GB a few months back really helped to smooth things out a bit though, likewise using a NVME drive.
As far I am aware the only person who may have claimed that 10gb is enough for FC6 plus the optional HD Texture Pack is your best mate Nexus. My understanding is you need bare minimum 12GB and not even sure that is enough due to the way it has been designed
Latest rumours show the 4080 will have 20GB vram so that should be enough for most, though I am sure Grim5 will pop in now and then with his 24GB epeen edition to look down at us peasants and say it ain’t enough
I look forward to the bants we will have if AMD only come out with a measly 16GB again. I am sure someone will make a thread titled is 16GB enough?
Just seen this now.
The problem I have is that it's not a consistent universal findings i.e.
- we have tommy who posted video showing him dropping to single digit fps to never return to normal
- only 2 tech sites reporting it where as the others don't
- my experience/videos showing fps is fine along with frame latency and certainly nothing like what tommy gets
- on ubi forums, you have 3080ti and 3090 users reporting fps drops but then apparently there problems are "system issues"
- it doesn't behave like a true vram shortage/capacity issue i.e. as per my cp 2077 video and other videos linked showing vram issues
- no one has been able to list/show a game where fps has dropped to single digits purely because of vram and nothing else? So far FC 6 seems to be the first?
The game is generally sustaining 70fps with no upscaling at all. If I was actually playing rather than testing, I probably would use FSR, but I'm trying to keep everything as stock as I can. Plus, I'm not really having any variance, it is consistent 60-70fps until it isn't, then it's at about 20fps until I reset. Or one case where the cut scene must have been about 4, but my monitor was still reporting 20 - I'm discounting that as I wasn't even able to skip the cutscene, so think that it was a separate bug.
So it's not quite what matt etc. would have people believe then....
Of course, your experience could be different with 4k.
I'll say it again as perhaps you missed it, 'A true representation - if you meet the requirements to use the HD Texture pack'. 3080 does not meet the requirements. Go back and re-read the post again.
I find it interesting that you slated Resident Evil Village so much because it was AMD Sponsored so had dumbed down graphics and RT, and here you are gushing over the same game months later. What changed?
I've book marked some quotes too.
As I said:
On a separate note, RE village looks FAR better than when I played the demo/beta ages back.
As per above, you got to stop taking things out of context in order to suit said narrative matt otherwise you end up tripping yourself up later on
I never slated the game for being "amd sponsored" either... Only thing is RT has been dumbed down as per other amd games RT (as shown with DF in depth video), there is no denying that and it shows but it still makes a nice difference over rasterization methods.
I still stand by those listed games looking better too especially metro as the RT lighting etc. adds more to the atmosphere/tone of the game.
What's your thoughts on the perf. though matt?
PS.
One of my favourite RT games is an amd sponsored title..... riftbreaker.
