Installing XP is a royal pain...

My BIOS does not seem to want to enable IDE mode, and XP does not install on SATA drives. There is an option to install 3rd party drivers during install, but it requires a floppy drive (?!). Currently trying to modify an XP disk to do the business, but it's a pain. No luck yet.

Edit - no luck integrating Intel SATA drivers into an XP install with nLite. Any suggestions greatly appreciated :(

I tried installing XP yesterday but gave up in the end. Couldn't find any compatible drivers and was so unstable that it kept blue screening durung installation. Not going bother with it.

there doesn't seem to be much support for xp on z77/87

no drivers are listed on gigabytes website, idk if you've tried win7 drivers as most contain xp drivers,i know the lan drivers do

Just getting it to install would be a start!

There are 32bit versions of most drivers on the CD - don't know if they're compatible with XP though. I know that some people have managed to get XP going on Haswell, so it *should* be possible... I thought that simply using IDE mode for the SATA ports should do it, but nope. Same bluescreen error as using AHCI mode: "STOP: 0x0000007b (0xF78B2524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)"

With integrating the chipset drivers into a Windows .iso using nLite, I'm out of ideas to be honest...

Changing SATA from AHCI to IDE should allow you to install without F6 storage drivers or slipstreaming (on Z77 at least, no idea about Z87 sorry).

yeah - tried that already :( Tried two BIOS versions as well (F5 and F6d), and with both there was no read of the HDD during XP install :(

You're already miles in front, are you trying to beat 8-Pack? :p

Well:

a) I'm only 2s in font, and close to the limit of my hardware, with less than half the competition time gone.

b) All it would take it for someone with a Haswell and XP to come along and my score would be toast, even with mediocre RAM.

c) This is more about getting the best score I can from my hardware than winning a competition. Looking around, sub-7:30 is the "big leagues" for 4Ghz pi32m. I want to break 7:30 :) Even if I don't win, if I can pull a sub 7:30 score I'll be happy :) On Win 7 that isn't going to happen.

d) Nobody is going to beat 8-Pack. We have neither the hardware nor the expertise.

Thanks Kei, looks like you have a better board for clocking than me, seems you have slightly more options. Will try replicating your settings as my OS might give me the edge as its a rather 'micro' version of XP, RAM usage as low as 93M with explorer killed just before a Spi run

93mb seems quite high as my bog standard install is using about 65mb. Are you running a version with service pack 3?

My motherboard was the top gigabyte ud5 model with the 790fx chipset.

Maybe I'm looking at the wrong figure then, I have all services disabled and theres 13 processes running once I've killed explorer. Mines a Gigabyte 880GM-UD2H.

I may have to buy some CAS8 1600mhz ram to see if I can eek anymore out of mine, will also see if there is a later bios available.

Yeah we might be looking at different things with regard to memory usage. You might well have a hard time with that 880G board as it's only got a 4+1 power phase and no heatsink on the vrm's. (an overclocked 955 @ 1.5V uses approximately 100-120W more juice vs stock)

I have been wondering what the best choice of ram for a phenom system would be, as deneb IMC's don't like ram speeds much above 1600, with only the very best managing just over 1800. I reckon 2000mhz+ modules with decent timings should do quite well running sub 2000mhz, possibly managing cas6.

Theres nothing wrong with the board per se, it managed this

For RAM usage I'm looking at the comming charged at the bottom right of task manager. AMD systems love tight timings, so something that'll do something along the lines of 6-6-6 @ a little over 1600mhz would be awesome

You might be better of scouring second-hand markets for 2Gb modules of older DDR3 with tight timings. The newer stuff seems to be based around high clockspeeds and relatively loose timings. For pi it seems that timings are king... so far I haven't been able to beat my 2150Mhz CAS-8 score, even using 2800Mhz CAS11 or 2666Mhz CAS10. The 2150Mhz CAS-8 score was done with some old Corsair XMS3 modules. It will also run CAS-7 at slightly slower speeds (~2000Mhz).

Still no luck here installing Windows XP. No idea how to get the OS to recognise the SATA drives. Tried everything I can think of, short of buying a new motherboard with a working IDE emulation :(

Ballistix tracer or elite wouldn't go much tighter than stock then? Was thinking of grabbing a set of one of the two as I thought they'd go a fair bit tighter than my Ocz platinum low voltage kit. Am I right in thinking running single channel will lose me bandwidth?

And another one is using the on board gpu going to affect things for me.

Yeah - I tried that last night. No joy... :(

I'll have another crack at it tonight. Perhaps I didn't integrate the drivers correctly? I found the location for the Intel SATA drivers on the motherboard driver CD, and chose to include "entire folder", or similar, into the nLite build. I chose the 32bit driver sub-folder. I was a bit surprised that the driver files it found (two of them) were only a few kilobytes in size though... Is that to be expected? Or am I trying to mount the wrong thing?

I could get hold of a floppy drive (finding working discs might be harder), but I don't think the UD4H has a floppy connector? Neither does it have an IDE port.

Thanks, Shiari - I'll have a crack at that tonight :)

Only have a slow 8Gb stick at the moment, but it's a good excuse to grab a new one. 8Gb should be enough to check it out though :)

Doubt I'll be able to push this any further. Don't see any way of catching up to these haswell rigs already running stripped down xp at unstable levels. Improvement non the less.

* Great work on the score board Kei :)
