Merry Xmas.

Hahahaha, my bad. I checked this thread yesterday and thought we were still on the same page as the crappy 144p trailer :p:o

EDIT - only watched without sound so far but it sure does look like Prometheus.

Watched half of it but it was giving away most of the film. Looks like it has potential from the first half but I'm not holding out much hope after Alien 3 (all versions), 4 and Prometheus.

Looks promising to me.

I watch almost every sci-fi horror available as I'm a fan of the genre, so even if it is average, I'll probably enjoy it anyway.

I always find it interesting when people who are fans of a given genre are more picky than those that aren't particularly fans. To me it's logical for it to be the other way round; the more you're a fan of sci-fi horror, the less hard the movie would need to try for you to enjoy the experience. That's certainly the case with me.

Maybe 'true' fans will say Prometheus was an abomination for example, but I really enjoyed it just by virtue of the fact that it had aliens and horror and sci-fi!

Anyway, let's hope it's a decent movie.

The biggest problem is, society has been completely desensitised to the Alien & horror franchise. Back in the 70s and 80s this sort of film would have been high impact, now they could probably make it a 12A with gore, scares and bad language thrown in.

That, and where the character of films being on real sets with a man in a suit has been lost to the green screen and cgi/vfx.

It's like watching the original Friday 13th, terminator, predator etc which after years of modern TV are less scary than some kids cartoons or computer games.

For that reason, they can't replicate the original premise in a way which delivers on much more than a bog standard scfi film.

The biggest problem is....

I quite agree with this post.

Back in the 80s and 90s where CGI was very rare it was all sets and costumes just because thats all they had and make do with. Now it's all CGI because it's what they have to use. Granted some films use costumes and sets still but it's very rare. We are all accustomed to CGI now. Having a new film using no CGI that requires some degree of special effects like SciFi movies wont have the same affect on the viewer if they used sets etc.

It is a shame.

I think it's more to do with recycling the same thing to the umpteenth degree.

It's the call of duty of films

There is that, but all the factors which made the first two successes are now absent from cinema.

Literally everything, from production techniques right through to viewer expectations and what even scares people these days.

There has been a sizemic shift in society and technology over the last 30+ years. We are as far away from the cultural backdrop of the 1979 Alien film as the film was from the WW2 era.

Fans expect to see replication of the original's greatness. It's the same with every reboot or late coming sequel. The recepie for the original success was as much down to the society of the time as the film's plot and script. Examples include later predator/alien films, reboot ghostbusters, reboot TMNT, reboot the amazing spider man, independence day 2, terminator sequels/reboots etc.
