Assassin's Creed Odyssey

Still in Phokis, got distracted by some random naval sidequests and found some new places... the game's so massive I'm afraid it'll burn me out before I finish it.

I'd imagine it's like Origins where half the map isn't even needed to complete the main story, it's just there for exploration.

Just chiming in, it's taken me a hair over 4 hours and 30 minutes to get past the 'intro', you know, when it states 'Ubisoft presents' bit.

I did everything on the starting island. All side quests, caves, treasures etc. Not bad!

Got a feeling by the end of the game I'm going to be sick of Ezio's Family. Whoever made the decision at Ubisoft to constantly use the track should be shot.

Recently arrived myself and aimlessly wandering about. Trying to complete every location, although there seems to be no achievement for it?

Similar here, and then you zoom out on the world map

Seems a lot bigger than Origins, not just in map size, but also variety and density of different types of locations. Confused whether the mercenary board is offering radiant quests or not (the times ones?)?

Was it considered lucky in ancient Greece to keep 3 drachmae in an urn in the corner of every room? :D

:D

I have to explore those engravings properly and defeat that damn boar, only tried once but I was one level below and it killed me when I got it down to half health:p

I used the arrow strength ability that gives you 250% hunter damage.. In fact that's an ability everyone should have.

I think the timed ones are radiant. I'm still wandering around as well, at least those forts etc. are mostly optional but then the OCD kicks in...:D

Yeah, I think so but who am I kidding, I rode around the Origins map like crazy, I can't imagine not going to every island in this one:D
Well, can't really complain, the value for money is there:p

You do really need to play more smarter in this game, at least in harder difficulties when it comes to forts and killing in town. Had an epic battle with 3 mercenaries and fort boss's that went on for 10 mins, epic stuff :D so much more to combat vs being an overpowered monster as per prior titles.

Got to say I'm absolutely loving it so far. Although I completed Origins and enjoyed it, I'm definitely clicking with this a lot more. Possibly the more aggressive approach to combat (Origins was a lot more defensive based), plenty to do and general setting but regardless I struggled to put it down.

Also the game looks brilliant on my 4k Oled in HDR.

Agreed with the above, I'm playing on nightmare and it is bloody difficult. Having to parry and dodge a lot plus keep an eye on enemy attack timing to ensure I don't get opened up on the counter.

I especially liked that you can influence how battles play out:

The first sparta vs athens battle, I struggled massively, combination of underlevelled gear and the mercenary Hyrkanos tearing me a new one. I got some more resources upgraded what I could afford and did the side mission to separately take out Hyrkanos in the hopes it would keep him from showing up in the battle, which it did! Nice touch and made the battle a lot easier

True. Origins I used to just run in as loud as possible and fight everyone. I am planning my approach much more carefully this time and using assassination much more - makes it all much more fun. Combat is fun, quite rewarding when you chain together dodges and parries basically having most of the fight in slow mo (which is also a neat feature).

Some of the fights are truly epic feeling. I was fighting at a fort, I'd not managed to booby trap the brazier so was aware that reinforcements were a possibility. One guy went to light the brazier but I was nearby and climbed up and killed him, then 2 bounty hunters arrived and I got involved in a close running battle against them around the fort, suddenly I heard a guy was heading for the brazier but I was now several buildings away, no way I could reach him and no way I could fight the bounty hunters and reinforcements.

I rapidly climbed to a rooftop and let loose with an unaimed snapshot with my bow, felling the brazier lighter just as he reached out his arm to light the brazier. I know I could do that another 20 times and not pull off that snapshot. Awesome :D

I think I had the same experience without the stylish ending...only went there to take out the bounty sponsor, didn't have the confidence to go in at ground level so sniped a bit from the walls, got spotted, high level bounty hunters turned up, ran away!

At least you guys didn't lure a bunch of Athenians to a Spartan camp in Phokis and chilled watching the ensuring scrap, then as I went to loot one dead guy I accidentally stabbed a spartan soldier...cue benny hill music as I'm running around the camp with mad spartans chasing me. What clown decided to put the loot and assassinate buttons together?!

Combat is definitely much better. In origins it was a case of "Oh I screwed up the stealth approach, now I gotta chop down these fools".

Now you need to look at how many attackers there are, are there elites, which way could re-inforcements come from. Then the actual fights are much longer and require a bit of planning and position to use your abilities to the best effect.

It's much harder and is taking much more planning and time to get through the game, but more challenging and fun.

Did that once, except I meant to talk to a Spartan NPC, accidentally assassinated the guy stood next to him :'(

Can work both ways that, I somehow managed to get a mercenary to hit a civilian and promptly amused myself watching as a whole gang of them beat the mercenary down and give me a nice easy kill :)
