Assassin's Creed Odyssey

So now I'm in the first area, I've killed the leader and I've gone to the head army guy to start the battle. I just noticed I've got the highest bounty. The mission starts and as he is talking to me, 3 mercenaries many levels higher show up and kill me... All the time the soldiers just stand there doing nothing... The other guy just told my character how they are valued and part of the army etc!
I'm stuck in a loop. They kill me, I respawn at the point the guy starts talking to me and they turn up within seconds!

You’ll have to reload an earlier save or leg it and hide or go and kill the mercenary sponsors. It does seem to be nuts as to how the other people in the world react to you. I’ve been in fights where the whole village seemed to be after me. :D

Played AC 1 & 2 and didn't think much of them so have avoided the entire franchise for years. However couldn't avoid the hype about this so took the plunge in the xmas sales. Put in about 8 hours in the last two days which is loads for me as typically get an hour or two to game a day. Feels totally removed from the AC games of old :)

Looks great, runs great, does feel very similar to the recent Far Cry games in the sense of clear bases, resources then clear an area boss but don't mind that.

Just all round impressed and thinking to go backwards and pick up origins as well next, how does it compare?

@SixTwoSix - Origins is very similar in feel to Odyssey but somewhat smaller in scope. There's no mercenary system, RPG style decision making or Cult of Kosmos. It's essentially the same exploration and combat experience with a linear story and exceptional setting which the game makes superb use of. The tombs and pyramids are for more inventive than Odyssey also.

Origins is an excellent game in it's own right IMO, but if you're playing Odyssey first just be aware Origins is a leaner overall experience.

… and for reference this from someone who couldn't stand AC Unity or Syndicate :)

I would broadly agree with this except your point that the combat system is the same. One of my major gripes with Origins is that the combat felt rather janky and not as fluid as I would like (otherwise a good game in its own right). Whilst Odyssey is not perfect it's a definite refinement on the Origins system and also Origins does not have the power skills tree options of odyssey either which definitely changes up the gameplay and encourages a more aggressive approach whereas Origins was more defensive focused.

@zola25 & @SS-89 thanks for the replies.

From what you've both said i think i'd find Origins a bit of a diminished gaming experience after Odyssey as a few of the improvements you mention for Odyssey are the things I like the most about the game.

I didn't really have a clue what you were on about. It's struck me. He's the guy that sells gear for orichalcum isn't he?
Yeah, the Oikos vendor. Flippin useless RNG boxes of his that are FAR worse than Reda from Origins who also served the same purpose.

When I was playing Odyssey heavily (before rdr2 took hold) I was doing the daily and weekly quests for those rare crystals so I had about 1.5k of them. I blew some 450 or so on those RNG boxes - got nothing but purple crap so with a sickly feeling I stopped playing - figured 172hrs was enough anyway

Got some 4.8million saved up along with 1k+ of those crystals and a metric ton of resources... Sod all to buy with it all :/

Whilst I am definitely finding it not as good as Origins, I am totally engrossed in it now. I could take or leave the ship bits though.

I just find it a bit lightweight if you know what I mean... Nothing has any weight to it, especially the combat. Origins was already a bit like this, but not to the same extent.

The game is still great though. Not sure I've quite got the gist of the conquest stuff, but I'm sure it will come.

I just tried a quest that was... Well I don't know how to describe it. It is level 13 and so am I, you have to kill a boar. I play without enemy health bars BTW. Anyway, I crept up and perched on a cliff quite near it. I proceeded to fire over 100 arrows straight in to it as it was wandering around below me. In the end I put enemy health on to see how much was left and went down to it... 100% health... The encounter apparently didn't trigger until I was on the ground.

Wow.

I then spend 10 minutes hacking away at a pig as its health very, very slowly dwindles. It then starts summoning other pigs to fight along side it!

Seriously? It was a relief when the pig killed me as I really couldn't be bothered any more

I switched to easy mode after about 30 hours. The game is so long as it is without dragging out the fight sequences to make them even longer. I can't imagine what the game would be like on the hardest setting.

Yeah I played on hard but the combat does not become more interesting by making enemies into sword sponges...this kind of difficulty balancing is utterly worthless.
