BMW and M Power Owners

Been looking at cheaper service options via BMW's website but whilst it recognises my cars reg number (2000 e38 735i) I'm directed to contacting my dealer as it appears "value" servicing isn't available for the 7 series, am I missing something?

It's got full BMW s/h and given it's only done 56k I'd like to keep it BMW if it's not going to prove too extortionate.

Your best bet is going to be a chat with the service manager. Explain it's a very old car but that you'd love to keep up the history provided the cost of doing so is proportional to the car it is. See what he can come up with. You'll get the best deal that way. Sometimes they'll even match independents.

Yes yes, all point and laugh! Myself included :D

In other news, quite bummed at the moment. I bought the Mintex M1144 brake pads for the front based on the rave reviews I'd read on forums and comment sections about them being amazing on the road.

Well yes, they do appear to be amazing after a few hundred miles, but they now squeal like there's no tomorrow when applying up to medium brake pedal pressure at city road speeds. No noises above 40MPH, however.

I am going to sack them off and go buy a set of PFC Z Rated again. Those pads never squealed on the front.

So word of caution to anyone looking at high performance pads. Just stick to PFC Zs!

I'll be able to sell the M1144 of course, but at a fair loss. As if the TCO wasn't off the charts already...

Live an learn.

Did you fit them yourself? Maybe you made a mistake / didn't grease the right bits.

Unlikely.

The M1144 is a high heat performance pad. I didn't anticipate the amount of heat needed for them to not be noisy, hence why they are not best suited to town speeds. I now know why the box says "not suitable for road use". M1144 noise is something people mention often it seems, but I didn't read that far into threads on owners forums to see that point being made. I've ordered PFC Z Rated now, £105 for a set, so not bad really. Ended up cheaper now than the first time I got them, which is nice. The M1144 stops the car faster than the PFC, but both are a lot better than the stock Pagid/Textar pads.

Real OEM tells you the part number, but not the maker. You can easily google the part to get to the OEM maker though,. but BMW also used multiple makers to produce the same parts over the years. Brakes being a prime example (Pagid, ATE and Textar).

Thought as much! Was going to stockpile some parts from ecp when they next have a massive discount on.

Some pads are just noisy, Carbotech XP8 I had were amazing, but so loud squealing on light braking unless they were really hot

Depends entirely on the caliper and how they are installed. I have Carbotechs but my calipers have two sets of anti rattle shims and a anti rattle shim that goes over the two pad pins (Monoblocks front and rear). They work as well because if I brake in reverse they can squeal but never going forward.
