He's leasing it though and the diesel works out a lot cheaper than the petrol.

There equivalent petrol engine would cost him £60 per month more so even doing just 6k miles per year, he's much better off with a diesel than petrol.
I see. He's no intention of keeping it after the 2 years are up so it shouldn't be an issue for him. Cheers.
