BMW and M Power Owners

I used to have an e46 325i manual Touring, 2000 m/y, changed it for an e39 530i Sport Auto of the same age, a few more miles and despite the 5 being heavier (but only by 100kg or so!) and being automatic, it feels noticeably quicker than the 325 was, never bothered to check the actual figures tbh but seat of the pants as such, the bigger engined 5 feels the quicker to me, despite being much more refined...

Fair enough, just isn't my experience of them - I guess the 3 litre feels a bit more muscular but there's little in it in terms of feel imo and I'd be willing to be there would be very, very little in it if they were both on the road

My friend had a 325 manual and has recently changed to a 530 auto and there's not much in it. 0-100, my Jag would pull out a few car lengths on his old E46, but with his 530 they're pretty much dead level the entire way. So the 530 is definitely faster than the 325, but not by that much.

325 v 530 is a rather daft comparison anyway and isn't particularly helpful in the 2.5 v 3.0 conversation. A 325i manual is lighter and the box is better suited for acceleration - the 530i is heavier and the autobox is waft rather than sport - the 530i auto adds over half a second to the 0-60 of the 530i manual.

So the fact an automatic 530i is, in your experience, quicker than a manual 325i demonstrates the 30i is a noticeably more potent powerplant.

Anyone got much info on the new B-series engines in the 330i and the 340i? All I can get is that they have some new method for cooling the turbo and the timing chains are at the back *sigh*

The new 330i is a 4 pot :(

Yup. Did you not see my rant a few pages back about it? Bloody heathens!

It's basically replaced the 328i. Very similar power output. Less than 10hp in it.

That sucks, could have at least been a v6 :( Is the chain expected to last the life of the engine? Thank god it isn't a belt, that would suck royally

If it's anything like the one in the old x20d's it could get very expensive for people

BMW have used chains for decades and only that particular engine has ever had issues with them. It's generally a non-issue and far better than belt drive.

Agreed but have they always been located at the back of the engine?
My recollection was that that is what made it such a problem as it generally meant full engine removal to repair or replace.

If I get the z4, we're definitely going for a jaunt around the wicklow mountains. :D

Though I might be a bit outpowered. :p

(this one is a private sale through work, he wants 6.5k, but I reckon he'll take 6k). Only other one I can see is in Mayo, but the 4 owners is putting me off. The rest have 100k+ mileage which isn't the end of the world, but my cars get driven hard so would like as much leeway as possible. :D

Sounds good man, go get one! Wicklow mountains are all about momentum so I reckon you'll be OK :p I'd low ball the guy, they aren't that easy to shift over here!

Have you seen the cheap one down in Waterford? It's dirt cheap and leaves lots of cash for improvements.

Yeah scuff them up and ofc degrease the drum surface. Not wrenched on a wheel bolt, probably just knacker the taper on it. Normally I'd just stick a couple of bolts in and use a bar between them, if you can't move it with 18" of leverage then it's definitely tight :p. Seriously though if you want to use a torque wrench then just whack it on the hub nut.

Thanks for your advice Clarkey.

I took the rear discs back off, gave the shoes a good going over with a file, cleaned everything up and then refitted it all. I opted for 8 clicks of the wheel, a compromise between you and BMW.

I then tightened the handbrake cables using the torque wrench method.
Handbrake now working fine and feels balanced, no lurching when using it on a hill.

Being an Auto it doesn't see much use anyway but I make a conscious effort to use it to stop it seizing up.

Do you have a link for the waterford one?

Picked up a face-lifted E39 525i SE saloon a couple weeks back. Very happy with it, low number of owners and has clearly been well cared for as well as being totally stock.

What made me go for it over others I've seen was the all black interior, and being a manual. M-Sport wheel was a bonus. I've done a few small things on it, the major thing which is to come is an Android based headunit as my only main gripe with the car is the lack of connectivity but that's down to the age of the thing really . :)

Not sure whether to sell my Z4 3.0si and make the jump to the Z4M, I'm kind of wanting more power, it's my second car and they seem to be holding their value well. It's either that or fit the new ESS supercharger to the 3.0si but then I'd have to fit an LSD and BBK, by the time I've done that I am in Z4M money.
