DirectX 12

Directx updates didn't used to need a new gpu.

Yes they did: dx9 - dx 9hw, dx10 - dx10 hw, dx11 - dx11 hw. Of course, most of the games (not all), can run on a lower number api, but ONLY if the they are supported. Crysis 3 or Star Citzen require dx11 hw.

This. People need to stop and think before proclaiming rubbish about mantle having microsoft scared etc. Progress is good and I welcome it.

Yup, if we're lucky, it won't come again the period with only dx11 games, like dx9 was for previous gen.

Also, why do people think that mantle will kill off Dx? Did OpenGL kill off Direct3D? Nope, exists happily along side it, for obvious reasons.

lol one guy said it (in jest back to the guy who said MS was dead) and that equates to multiple people now. Nobody thinks Mantle will kill off DX (well at least I don't think they do). :D

Mantle is good for AMD users.

DX is good for nVidia users.

The balance is restored :D

Calin Blank: maybe i'm just too old, i remember going from dx3 to around dx7 on the same gfx card.
MS havn't released a dx update in ages, they must have been working on something other than making windows look like a bad fisher price toy.

Nah dx and mantle are good for amd user's. Amd cards did not lose the ability to use dx in the majority of games that won't be using mantle. Also don't forget that amd cards fully support the latest dx standard of 11.2 where as Nvidia only support some of it fully. Amd themselves know that DX is not going away anytime soon.

Again, they spent their whole time talking about Mantle at the Hawaii launch? Firstly, it wasn't a Hawaii launch, they launched a few cards and announced Hawaii but it most certainly wasn't a launch. Secondly, for a 1-2 hour thing, they mentioned Mantle, in passing, at the very end of the conference for about 2 minutes. So utter rubbish in "spending the whole time talking about Mantle". They barely said anything at all about Mantle and a relative launch of the rebranded 7000 series cards where they also announced the 290x was coming soon basically.

As for DX12... frankly the thing that worries me most is how close it is. If MS have decided on a new direction for DX12 and to actually make a good API and they've decided on this direction in the past 2-3 months, I'm exceptionally worried if it comes out any time soon.

Hopefully launch of DX12 won't be any time remotely soon and they actually mean it when they say they want to improve it to be a great API. Of course, MS has said as much and attempted to fix the driver overhead MANY times in the past, in DX10, 11, 11.1 and 11.2 there are all things that are supposed to drastically improve it and most dev's find most of the fixes barely do anything.

They were introducing the upcoming cards, not launching them. There wasn't even prices released and it was all NDA until the actual launch in october was it? Anyway thats a little off topic.

I think he could be right about them only recently chaning direction and too hope they don't rush something out.

I don't think it will be a POS though, well i hope not :)

Absolutely and if anyone should be moaning, it should be nVidia users :D

Not sure what I am missing out on with DX11.2 but AMD users have it all, with DX11.2 and Mantle and all us poor nVidia folk get is DX11.andabit, with not even full DX11.1 support.

It doesn't bother me that I would need to upgrade for newer enhancements (sure the Mrs won't be happy) and I accept that these things happen in technology.

I don't think anyone hates Mantle, do they? Also i think the trolls (good job so far guys lol) already have nvidia cards ;)

I don't think it's a bad thing needing to upgrade, keeps the market going I guess.

I won't be upgrading for dx12 though just like I didn't upgrade for mantle. Hopefully by the time if comes for me to need to upgrade both mantle and dx12 will be out and fully supported :)

Edit: Rossi :) nice pic haha

I think it's a bit early to be getting excited about this yet.
Hopefully it will be a much more refined version of DirectX in a similar vein to Mantle.

Will it need new cards and a new version of Windows? Maybe, but that's been the case for years now. It's never been a good thing, but people have accepted it for years and I can't see this being any worse.

Even if DX12 does do what it says it will that doesn't mean the end of Mantle. If developers love it so much then they'll keep using it. They'll probably use DX12 too as I suspect they'll want to sell games to Nvidia users too. A decent DirectX does strengthen Nvidia's position regarding whether they will NEED to adopt Mantle though.
The question will be if AMD's nw cards will support DirectX 12. If they do then developers have the choice of just supporting DirectX, but if they don't then developers would need to support DirectX and Mantle (unless they wanted to lose a huge chunk of potential customers).

I don't think you are missing anything with dx11.2 as i think Nvidia support most if not all the major parts that matter to gaming. Those that know more have said something along the lines.

@ GoogalyMoogal, Since when is Mantle refined?

AFAIK Nvidia officially will not get Certed for DX11.2 but support it all on 1 level or another.

Reason is above

I find this statement from Amd quite amusing, as they dont fully support command lists, yet claim to fully support DX11.2
