*** Elden Ring ***

Seemed to be a tiny update this morning on steam, no idea what.

Also nvidia driver 511.79 claims "game ready" for elden ring

"This new Game Ready Driver provides the best day-0 gaming experience for Elden Ring"

That what I was using yesterday and on the whole was ok.

No issues here on my system (see signature). Almost constant 60 with a few small dips at 1440p with everything on High.

Went for an Astrologer in an attempt to make things a little easier and I love magic of course.

For my first FromSoftware game this should be an experience.

Yeah thats the thing I mentioned earlier in the thread, its like the camera tries to autocentre behind you if you try aimlooking other than the direction you are going. I've seen some MMOs have the same issue. Should be an easy fix I would have thought.

Same here, downloaded a small 9MB update. Not 100% but think it may have adjusted something with the mouse input, I don't know how to describe it but it does feel better. My FPS is also pegged at 60FPS, might just be the area I'm in or a placebo effect, but sure I was seeing it fluctuating between 58-60FPS, not much of a deviation but something.

What is this game like?
What does it compare to of other titles?
RPG like D&D based stuff or mmorpg like LOTRo or action RPG like skyrim?

Its a touch of Witcher and a touch Skyrim speckled with its own unique style and gameplay. If you like RPG/exploring/dungeons/combat I fail to see how you cant like this game. :)

Its dark souls but more open. If you don't like souls games you will absolutely hate this. If you can get on with them then this is an interesting direction for the franchise.

Running slickly for the most part here but when the stutter happens during a boss fight it’s frustrating as hell.

Yet neither CPU nor GPU are overly struggling so no idea what’s causing it. I am using an Xbox controller though if that plays a part.

Hope they figure out what it is and patch it the hell out as it’s spoiling what would otherwise be quite a novel experience for me.

Finding the combat ever so slightly not right though. There’s a bit early on where I kept getting my backside handed to me but even when I knew where the enemy was, no matter how I tried to attack first it would keep getting the jump on me, even from around a corner!

I can see what people mean by be prepared to die a lot, I already have. :D

How's magic in this one? I ended up choosing Vagabond as my start with a view to maybe adding a bit of magic later on like I did in DS3 with my knight, but wondering how people are finding it if you start with a magic class?

Patch 1.02.1 on steam

Here are the changes made available with this patch:

  • Start-up issues related to Easy Anti Cheat (EAC) have been improved.
  • Mouse operation improved.
  • Reduced number of files needed to load when entering a new area.

Started as a wretch for the true DS experience, after 10 hours ive just killed godrick. Loving this game so far, its breathed new life into the formla.

I started with the astrologer in the aim of speccing into magic and dexterity for a kind of spellblade assassin.

It feels pretty good so far, a lot smoother to target, move and shoot rapid spells than attempts in previous games to me. The two starter spells pack a decent punch too providing the enemies aren't resistant. It gives you a wide arcing spell off the bat that's great for crowd control, it seems to work well on horseback as well.

Could never get into these types of games, Pc ports were usually poor, difficulty was 2 much, i gave up on dark souls 3 because i couldnt get past the first boss

yeah this is the most accessible one so far. You can basically get around a lot of the map and find a bunch of equipment and upgrade components before having to do any hard bosses which is like these games version of an easy mode.

The combat is still punishing though if you are not used to it

I am the same, always think I will get it and give it a right good go but I always back off as I am put off with my experience of past games.

Dang, wishing I'd started with that class now. It's quite a bit of levelling and finding catalysts and spells before I can experience that. Ho well, I did just find a greatsword, so there's that!

Still having great performance at 1440p high default settings on a 2070 Super, 9900K and 32GB ram, kept Steam FPS counter going and only noticed three split second drops to about 40 fps in 10 hours of play, otherwise been consistent 60 with the odd 59 or 58.

That includes a lot of alt tabbing as well, a few things running in the background, performance has been fine.

As for difficulty, having completed all the Dark Souls series, this is much easier and more accessible than any Dark Souls game, but still plenty of things that can test you if you're not levelled up, or in the wrong area. You can stealth and avoid tough enemies far more that you can in Dark Souls game as well. If you want you can explore for hours without having to fight much anything that tough.

Some aspects are going to be hard to grasp for new players like summoning, but it's a lot more fair to new players than Dark Souls games. In Dark Souls 1 alone, one wrong turn right at the start of the game can put you into utter hell you can have to quit a whole game from. Even when going the "correct" easy route, later after having beaten a few bosses and feeling confident players can in seconds be ambushed, massively weakened and stranded for doing little more walking down a path.

Elden Ring is a lot more accessible for new players with the fast travel and a mount, well worth checking out for any RPG or action game fans.
