European Grand Prix 2010, Valencia Street Circuit - Race 9/19

Computer simulations are never a substitute for actual real world testing. .

Not really as Mclaren is the only team that have a simulator that can do aerodynamics.
What the simulator says is best for the track they are racing on they go with 100%
and just tweak it to each driver. Pedro de rosa let the cat out the bag in a interview after the Canada GP.

Can you elaborate on what Mercedes did in Friday testing.

I can't remember which site I saw the news, but Mercedes (as with Ferrari and Renault) turned up with a new blown diffuser. Now one of the concerns with this design is passing hot exhaust gas round areas which don't really like getting hot. During the Friday test sessions Mercedes found that they were actually burning the bodywork at the rear of the car and so had to modify things to divert the exhaust gas away. This substantially reduced the effectiveness of the new diffuser.

Another great vid, I'm liking the promo stuff McLaren are doing at the moment :)

A lot of the media and public stuff has been awesome this past year from what used to be seen as a cold and soulless team, even if martins interviews on TV and such-forth have really 'warmed' the team up as it were. kind of done the polar opposite of red bull.

So then why don't McLaren have the best/fastest car?

I'll say it again, computer simulations are no substitute for real world testing. Obviously computer simulations are better than nothing, but real world testing is the ultimate test of a new part/design.

Most F1 teams these days are VERY worried if their computer simulations don't almost precisely correlate with their real world experiences.

I think Martin Whitmarsh has done wonders for McLaren's image within the sport but also has helped the team get on with itself and be proud of itself and not hiding in the shadows waiting for the next FIA banhammer that the team seemed to believe was a forgone conclusion for a lot of the last years of Dennis' time in charge of the F1 team.

Martin's got the current world champ signed up alongside the previous world champ, both are popular, good drivers who get on well with each other. I'd say that Martin has made it much easier to people to like and admire McLaren now whereas with the Ron Dennis era you always felt that the next anti-Mosley/FIA/Bernie rant from Ron was going to cause more damage for McLaren than the targets of the rants.

However I also wonder if McLaren's signing up of Matt Bishop, an ex-F1 Racing magazine editor, to be their new press "bloke" has something to do with what McLaren are doing media wise. He's the big bald bloke you sometimes see standing next to Lewis or Jenson when they're being interviewed. :p
With Button on the top step ;)
Good lad. ;)

Just because RBs car maybe fast in quali trim don't mean jack if they don't finish the race. And the driver\team standings is evidence of this.
Roll on Silverstone ;)

You changed your story there. The subject was not about reliability, but about absolute speed.

You stated that McLaren have some form of simulator which no other team has and that testing isn't a necessity. I disagreed and retorted that if simulatiors alone are good enough to get the job done, why don't McLaren have the fastest car.

With regards to the reason for RBR not leading the title race: the biggest reason is that they don't have the current world champ and the previous year's world champ. If you have the best driver line-up then you can expect high points finishes, even if the car isnt that great.

Had Button and Hamilton been driving the RBR car, they would've been leading the title race by a considerable margin.
