Golf Thread

So... Any prediction on PGA Championship!? I feel Speith's onslaught this year may have come to an end for now. I'm sure Mcilroy has great odds with the fact he is supposedly still injured "Beware of the injured golfer". Jason Day keeps knocking on the door so maybe its time?

I tend to use my range finder (Nikon Coolshot 20) that helps me greatly with course management. Now I tend to leave my driver in the bag and reach for my 4 iron as I've been hitting it really well (over 200 yards) which on some courses leaves me in better areas for slightly longer irons. My course has some tight fairways and my driver can quite easily go into the local vegetation lets say.

I've been using my 3i a fair bit this past few years and have to say, it's a toss up between a sweet struck long iron and a boomed drive.
I thought I'd test this by buying a new black R15 9deg. cranked down to 8 for now and it goes great guns too. Dead heat for now but might sway to the driver if it stays like this.

How on earth do you lot hit your low irons as long as your driver? Surely that's not right :p

Admittedly the lowest iron I have is a 4i and I'm not particularly good at hitting it consistently, but my driver goes way further, there's no comparison. On another note, I played a local course today called Knighton Heath. Lovely little course set out in the woods, lots of tree-lined fairways and loads of elevation changes. Several tee shots were blind or had very sloping fairways and pretty much every green was protected by bunkers on all sides, but bizarrely I got one of my best scores I've ever got

I played a really easy local course yesterday and had an awful round, today I play one of the toughest courses I've played and get one of my best scores. Golf is a funny sport :D

My drives always fade right so frustrating.. Slowly working on my irons too getting slightly better found relaxing my hands more on the down swing gives a more natural smoother impact.

I would use Gamegolf if is was a bit cheaper. I know its not that expensive but for the price I wouldn't feel comfortable with the distances. Would you say it has helped your game at all?

Have any of you guys bought golf clubs from ebay before? Obviously I'm a bit concerned about fakes, but the potential saving is pretty big. I'm looking to buy a new driver to replace my ancient one and have tested the Taylormade R15 in a local store, but at £299 it's pretty expensive. I've found a brand new one in the spec I want, from a seller with good feedback for £210. Would you say it's safe to go for or should I spend the extra £90 and buy in-store?

For £90 I'd get one from the shop as you know if something were to happen with it you'd get full support by the shop and Taylormade themselves. When it comes to bigger ticket items (above £200) I'd personally only buy from a reputable source. Eg: Direct Golf, American Golf ect.

Cheers for the replies about what apps you all use but it was your putting average (and handicap) I was after.

I bought all of my clubs (except putter) from eBay and haven't had any problem. Just buy from a reputable seller or be willing to take a risk if the saving is big. Make sure the pictures are good and you can examine it closely for any discrepancies.

Had my best round of the season yesterday in the medal. Shot 76 off 12 so net 64 which is 6 under. Down to 11 now which is the lowest I've ever been and this is my first year back after about 12 years away. Single figures is the aim for next year! Need to practise a bit more though.

Have a look on golf bidder.

just a bit of info if your a slicer like i was. my ball always took off straight and than violently sliced right taking yards off the shot and of course causing so many more shots on my round. i made a very small change. i moved my right hand grip round more to the left . in other words i wrapped my right hand more over my left hand. this felt starnge for a while and resulted in some drives starting keft and staying there with a few hooks thrown in. after 3 rounds i am now hitting my drives straight and further. something to look at

+1

I went gold bidder, good price and good service, clubs were the quality advertised too, very happy with my service from there.

I seem to have rediscovered my swing practicing on the range again so a round next Friday hopefully get me sub 100 again.

Thanks for the tip, I'll have to try it out.

Also make sure your rolling your wrists back.

Its very easy with longer clubs to stay open at impact, a lot of people open their wirsts at the top but dont actively come back to neutral at the bottom.

A good drill for this is the baseball swing, before teeing off hold your club perpendicular to the ground then along that line swing out then back to the imaginary impact point directly in front of you. Theres no way you can achieve this without rolling your wrists back square, then just repeat that feeling with the club on the ground

I have this issue. Tends to happen the more tired I get so on the range after 30/40 balls and definitely on the bigger sticks. Guess I'm just not 'releasing' the club head and my hands are way in front at impact. Used to happen a lot providing hilarity to my mates but much better at preventing it these days. Would love to get my head around it! Slice could be so vicious it would boomerang behind!

Might just go range with a 4iron until I can hit that off the ground consistently. Think if you can hit those longer irons you can hit anything.

Saw a few tips of trying to form a V with your arms and the club pointing at 5o'clock just after impact which you can't do without releasing. Must try next time at range.
