Golf Thread

Been a while since I posted, but I think I am fairly settled with my new irons now

6 out of the last 7 rounds have all been played to my handicap or better, with 3 of those rounds being played on courses I had never seen before

Got a couple of Callaway driver heads (815 and Alpha) and shafts on the way to me (hopefully being sent today) so there could be a new driver in the bag in the next week or so as well if I find a combination that works

Playing another new to me course tomorrow so hoping the weather holds up but the forecast doesn't look promising

Shot 89 today and managed to sink the ball from the bunker  ...on the 10th for a bogey :(

Came 2nd in the medal last Sunday 91-24=67 3 points off top so wasn't upset. Got me cut down to 23.0. All in all getting there and know where I am going wrong just need to work on course management a bit more to lower my scores further.

Entered first comp today, by 5th hole I went in rough, coming out it was under a bush, crouching down and swinging I caught the rough ground and sprained my wrist so couldn't carry on.
The. When putting everything in car, due to my 'limp wrist' I put keys in car, shut boot and it locked.
Now sat waiting for Skode Assist.

Gutted to say the least.

I would use Gamegolf if is was a bit cheaper. I know its not that expensive but for the price I wouldn't feel comfortable with the distances. Would you say it has helped your game at all?

I don't use it for the distances to greens etc as I have a range finder for that. The phone app is a bit naff I found for tracking rounds so I have the proper hardware version with the tags etc. It's a part of my pre-shot routine now.

I track each round I play though and it is very useful. I generally know my problem (I miss a lot of greens.... and fairways!) but it gives good information on how I miss the greens and where I miss them from.

That is my profile in case you are interested.

My game has been a bit frustrating recently, not connecting with irons very well and poor chipping. Putting has been superb though. Gained a lot of confidence in my latest round on a gorgeous course - Stockport Golf Club. Probably my favourite that I've played.

I'm really tempted by Game Golf, it would be really useful to have access to those sort of stats. Currently I have no idea what my fairway and GIR percentage is, though it's probably not great. It would also be interesting to see distances for each club because it's very hard to know which club to select in a particular situation.

Also, has anyone tried one of the wristwatch range finders? I'm a bit wary of getting a proper range finder for fear of looking like a plonker, plus very few golfers at my club seem to use one, but I would really like to know how far away I am on any given shot. That in combination with game golf would give me a much better idea of what club to hit each time I step up to the ball.

I don't use the watch for a couple of reasons. First of all I am bit of an OCD freak so I dislike things on my wrists/fingers etc. Secondly you would need to get a top of the range watch to give you more than front, back and centre of green. This is where I benefit from my range finder. For instance the par 3's I may look at distance to flag and distance to carry the front bunker. This gives me a wider yardage for me to drop the ball in and feel comfortable I have the right club. Don't let this push you away from getting a wrist watch though as it is practical. Yardage is usually there. You just have to make sure its charged and you are on the correct hole!

I use an old android phone with free caddy on it. I just uninstalled all the apps removed the sim and put it in aeroplane mode

Haha, it was more a reference to my ability level as a golfer. I think it's fine to use a range finder if you're a good golfer, most of your friends/playing partners use them, or lots of the people at your home course do, but at my level I fear I'd look a bit 'all the gear, no idea'.

The last time I saw people using range finders was when I was playing in a four-ball and we let a group of two through on the tee at a par 3. They had lovely clubs, brand-new looking bags on Motocaddy electric trolleys, they were dressed like tour pros, etc. Both of them got out their range finders and got a yard different distance to the pin. They then spent time discussing what club they were going to hit based on the conditions and the distance and then both proceeded to miss the green. They were obviously decent enough golfers despite the poor shots but it did make them look a bit stupid, so it's sort of put me off using a range finder until I feel like I'm good enough to justify it.

Had a massive revelation today.

Two tees down on the floor level with the ball...I was chunking / hitting them all slightly fat! Move weight forward, concentrate on hitting the ball then the turf, and all was ridiculously better at the range.

If I was teaching a new golfer, the first thing I'd say is - think about hitting the ball THEN the turf; if your swing slope is steep enough you won't thin it.

Now to figure out why my driver is always a minor slice.

I hit a few sliced drives today and then remembered something Rickie Fowler said. He said that if he's trying to promote a slice he'll tee his ball a little lower, whereas if he's trying to hit a draw he'll tee it higher. It helped me so it could be something to check.

Over the moon with my score this weekend. First ever round under par. Shot 69 gross on a par 70. From 7 handicap this come with a beefy 44 pointer! I think being my birthday weekend it may have had something to do with it!
