Golf Thread

Im suprised at 11 handicap your using mp68's I'm off 10 regularly shooting in the mid singles and I dont feel im ready for blades yet

It's just about confidence. I used to be a 6. I'm probably not good enough these days to use blades but I aspire to be. My second set is MP52's but the 68's are just so much more satisfying.

Hi everyone! Got a quick question. Would anyone be interested if I created a thread on handicaps so we can all track handicaps etc to see each others progress. Maybe linking howdidido profiles if you are members at clubs. If it wont get the interest then I will knock it on the head!

Don't see why that wouldn't work, good idea I'd say as people can offer out some advice for the higher handicap players like myself to try and help lower them.

My old club had winter competitions where your handicap could change, however it could only go down and not up. At the end of winter your handicap would go back to what it was unless there was a suggestion that it should be reviewed.

My current club's handicaps don't change, however I've entered the winter league competition which does review the handicaps each week. Again, once we get back to summer the handicaps will be reset unless there is the suggestion that it should be reviewed.

The only difference between winter and summer is we play stablefords with pick clean and place in winter and medals in summer the clock change signals the format change.

Everything else is identical back pots handicap changes the works, we just get on with it.

Pick and place for us too. I believe it started mid September for us.

Does anyone find when you get towards the end of winter season you think "I cannot wait to get more roll on the ball" but you also get to the end of summer season and think "I cannot wait to be able to stop the ball on the green where I want".

Nah I dont worry about roll I dont need the distance I prefer to carry and stop but then I carry 165 with a 7 iron with around 6500-7500 rpm of backspin measured on flightscope

Anyone here use Titleist AP2 (712) irons?
I have a rather clean second hand set I'm considering chopping in my aging Wilson FG Tour's for. Ideally I'd like 714's, from reading up I think the changes from 712's to 714's is quite considerable, and the 716's are expensive to say the least.

I'd like to hear anyone's opinion that has hit 712's or even better had both FG Tours and the Titleist's.

Cheers,

Got fitted for some Ping i Series irons on Monday and today made the decision to go ahead and buy them. Can't wait! They felt wonderful on Monday and I can't wait for them to arrive.

2 under par until I double bogeyed the par 3 then finished level par. Was off 17.8 6 months ago yet still feel like I let myself down... :( Golf is such a head game!!!

Didn't buy the second hand AP2's in the end - went to Precision Golf up in Chertsy and got fitted (by fitted I mean PROPERLY fitted) shafts, lofts, lies, grips, the works, for a new set of AP2 716's - dispersion on a moderate bad shot was no more than a coulple of yards.

On top of that the new shafts gave a significant feeling of reassurance, meaning you can go at shots more confidently. This along with the new tech made up for a 6i distance gain of around 11 yards (club loft was the same as my old 6iron - in fact all lofts were the same except for the wedge which was a degree stronger).

Great afternoon, and can't recommend the service enough - if you are serious about improving your game and want to guarantee that the kit you are using is fit to your strengths then I suggest you make an appointment!

I shall be (in the next couple of weeks) booking up to go to Celtic Manors TaylorMade peformance centre for a full fitting. New driver, 3 wood, hybrid & full set of irons. Really can't wait! Driver I'm going for an M2 same as the 3 wood and hybrid and the irons I'm looking at the Psi's I've tried them before and they were lovely to hit and saw gains instantly. I'll get my mate who's coming with me to get some photos.

Also just booked a 2 round and 1 night stay at the Belfry with TheCSSDoctor and a friend of his. Really cant wait should have all my new gear by then as well so doubly exited!

I was pleasantly surprised by the Belfry, wasn't expecting much with people saying its over-rated, but I thought it played very nicely and the greens were superb.

So, bought some AP2 716's, can't remember if I posted that up, anyway... they were fakes! Get-in!!

Been on a mission since to get all this sorted. I found this out when I took my original (fake) set to Precision Golf to get the numbers run on Trackman. Aimed to have shafts, lofts, lies etc all consulted but it took the guys all of 4 seconds to (gently) tell me they were fakes. They nipped out and and got a real AP2 716 and that hammered home the point.

To the untrained eye (i.e. my eyes) they looked good, and indeed they were good fakes, I mean, I hit the ball well with them, so would have gone unknown to be honest, or at least until I hit a real one and felt what legitimate forged felt like (the fakes were most likely cast irons) - Even the Project X shafts were fakes. (Titleist also confirmed the serial was not on their DB)

Needless to say, these were an Ebay purchase (won't be doing that again) so I got in touch with the seller immediately and they dispatched a courier to collect and refunded me within a week, so all in all a potential minefield was avoided.

Anyway... back on track... I got upset, which means my credit card also got upset... I ordered a new set of 716's, fully custom fitted and built from Precision Golf.

Precision Golf are based up in Chertsey and I must say the experience was simply nothing like I've ever had before. Spent 4 hours going through each iron (and driver also), pin-pointing the best shaft for my distinctly average swing. Don't get me wrong, I hit my old clubs reasonably well, but my 6i carry went from 171 to 183 and with miss-hits, dispersion on bad shots made me giggle... what felt like a total slice went maybe 4 yards right. Ball flight was changed and the KBS Tour shaft we went for are smooth as silk.

They check absolutely everything there, even the balance and weighting in the shafts to make sure all the force is evenly distributed to maximize consistency. You can come away knowing that what you are using is absolutely fitted to your swing. I highly recommend if you are interested in improving your game, starting off by making sure your gear is fitted to your swing and strengths is only going to help.

I collected the clubs this evening, can't wait to get outside and see what they can really do.

me = happy
wallet = sad
wife = mad
