Golf Thread

I just bought some wilson starter kit (£399 from AG) and a kit from sports direct for my 7 year old.

Absolutely loving getting out with my lad at weekend and odd evening at the driving range.

We even got a chipping net in the garden and some plastic balls.

I played at withington golf course over the weekend. We turned up and didn't realise it had been flooded so it was down to 15 holes.

On the plus side, it was the first time I've scored in the 70s for years :D

Playing Slaley again on Friday, hoping for a decent round after how unplayed last game but that tends not to be how it works for me :p

Yeah I played pretty badly.

Well actually I was ok, 21 points, left ,6 points on the course with some short putts but was just frustratingly inconsistent off the tee which cost me.

Played a format called bogey golf, awful front 9 with - 8 and alright - 2 in the last 9.
Im still pretty crap at golf so just aim to have fun and try and not be last in comps.
Playing with random golfers also helps bring up confidence. On Friday I'm off for another lesson at barrow golf course and then getting a full bag fitting. I'm OK with my irons (titleist 718 ap1) and my ping putter but I never tried any other irons so thought it would be good to try out different sets and also try out some drivers. Depending on distance I get out of the woods I may buy a 3 or 5 wood instead of a driver if there's much difference I'll note down the fitting for clubs and grab them when in the sales or the exact spec appears on golf bidder

Mid September we always have a works last round of the season (even though most of us continue playing) and after a traumatic summer of trying to get back into the game I eventually shot under 100, got a 99.

Not great but it's a massive milestone for myself and hopefully something I can, firstly, maintain and then start improving. Would have been a 94 but 4 times I left a put within an inch (no exaggeration) of the hole and once I had a 35 yard putt go in the hole but because of the pace hop out :p:( that's not even mentioning my worst hole where I was putting for a birdie from 10 foot and ended up with a double bogie...

Good round though, consistent and straight and hopefully something to build on :D

A few mates and I have booked 36 holes at the Belfry in a couple weeks (with an overnighter at the resort), with us doing the PGA course on the Sunday - to say I'm excited would be an understatement!

i got some last year second hand , i got the adidas ones with the little twisty thing for the laces. They're leather so nicely waterproof.

Any recommendations for winter shoes. Only my first year playing but been bitten by the bug. Budget I'd say upto £100ish

Black & leather. Then choose ones that fit you. My personal choice for winter golf are Footjoys or Adidas, Adidas do a boot also which I personally don’t like but does offer more protection against stepping in big muddy puddles...

Well I did what I always do and played more when I should start easing off and didn't go so well :p

Shot a 106, which I'm not overly fussed by as I generally played well but 9-11 I went to bits and dropped 6 shots so I was actually fine that round. Played the course I got a 99 on last week again this morning and went round in 110, back 9 o got 17 of 18 points but the front 9 I was truly horrible and could barely hit a shot :p

Rather frustrated now rather than finishing the season on a high note, question is if I double do to improve and then probably get worse again :D

Got 3rd in a comp on Saturday. Got 101 net 69, Handicap is now 30. Played well got 4 pars.
Got to the green side bunker on a par 4 with my 2nd shot but took 4 to get out... Ended up with a 9shoild have had one attempt and then played backwards. My first hole I got a 7 on as a I stuffed two shots after my drive.
Lost a ball on the 16th but still manages a 7 on the par 4 so wasn't too bad.
Given me some bits to work on : bunkers, warm up routine, short chipping onto green (tenancy to underhit)

Played morcambe today, quite a hard round with really strong wind and some torrential rain. Drove the last hole and was just to the side of the green which is about 275 yards happy with that drive one of my longer drives. Got two comps in november , winter open at my club and then presentation day golf which shoild be good

Tried to start playing again last year after 11 years of not playing but due to a shoulder injury I had to stop again till after Surgery.
Went to the range today and I’m hitting all my Irons consistently straight and reasonably far, hitting my Hybrid(5 Hybrid) well off the deck and tried it off the tee also well. But compared to 11 years ago I just can’t hit my driver well at all, it either skims along the ground at 6000 mph or goes into outer space and travels 180 yards or it’s sliced 200 yards into the car park.
3 wood is slightly better but not much. I tried a 2 Hybrid with 18 degrees of loft and could hit that further than both off the tee.

Reckon I should stick to the Hybrid and/or longer irons off the tee instea?

I went a bit without using my driver, i started just using a 5 iron of the t which went an alright distance although i got a decent lesson that fixed my driver issues (just to slice massively) and now my drivers back in the bag. personally i would try not to avoid using a club, fi you struggle get a lesson to fix it

I find my 3 wood more forgiving and can hit it a lot further so started using that instead. Will eventually get some Lessons with the driver.
When I used to play drivers were the size of what 3 woods are now, so that’s probably helping.

I do the exact same thing. Couldn't hit my driver without slicing it big time. 3-wood pretty straight with an occasional fade every now and again.
Went to the range last month and think I've finally clicked with the big stick now. For me the only think I did different was to lift the chin a bit and allow my left shoulder to travel under it a bit better in the back swing. I think all it's done is give me a clearer swing back to the ball and stops me coming across it so much. Milled the ball dead straight and did so for the next dozen shots.

Wanted to hug the person in the bay next to me I was so happy. Next few visits and a few hiccups but in the main seems ok. Gutted won't be able to try it out for real for a bit now...
