Golf Thread

Winter golf is just about getting out for a walk/swing the club. I don't take any notice of scores/shots I hit etc - I rarely putt out in winter as well. I treat it as 3 hours of chat/walk with mates etc.
absolutely this. Scores are meaningless. No real true roll of the ball on a green or even a lie on the fairway due to conditions.

Got a round scheduled with some friends for Celtic Manor - Montgomerie, on Friday morning. Hopefully no fog, as there's been a bit of it around in the early mornings around here!
Be nice to get out to Celtic Manor again. Last time I went there, I shot 113 on Roman Road when I first started playing last year, so hopefully be better off than that this time.

Nothing as exotic as @MarkA but also have 18 holes booked in for Friday at Chichester Golf Club's Tower course. Forecast as it stands is for dry but cold weather. Expecting the course to be very boggy given they've reported over 8" of rain so far for November! I suspect half the battle will be keeping warm although carrying my bag will no doubt help keep the blood pumping, hopefully my back doesn't complain :p

Nice, be interesting to hear what you think (and what your impressions were last time!). Being 'just' the other side of the Severn it's on the to-do list but I think we're gonna wait till the weather is a bit nicer, although presumably it'll also cost a chunk more then but hey :p

take buggies for the Montgomery. It's a killer to walk round

myself and 7 others do Celtic Manor each year. Great setup and 3 great courses

Anyone played any of the courses at the Belfry? Partners talking about getting us a weekend there for Christmas but don't think I'm good enough to justify playing a course like that :/

I was looking at golfing breaks there a few months back, looks like they have courses for all abilities so I'm sure you'd be fine.

Out playing again today, picked two midweek/'lunchtime' this week and both have had thick fog, today visibility was maybe 110 yards, fun times :p

Did still track score etc, partially cause I've just splashed out on the CT10 club trackers, which are awesome, and tbh it was a reasonably good game. I did lose two balls but both of those were just poor shots and nothing to do with the fog

Playing again tomorrow in Bristol, forecast is for the fog to lift before we start so fingers crossed but hey, who cares :p Did hit several shots were I lost the ball into the fog but as long as I got the trajectory before the ball disappeared I didn't find it too bad to find the ball, I am using bright orange balls though :D

Played the Derby and the PGA.

Derby is a similar standard to Great Barr just better drainage and greens.
the PGA is a tough course. lovely to play but very tough.

Not had the pleasure of the Brabazon yet

I have to find a way to keep warm tomorrow, meant to be 3-4C all morning! If I had buggy, I'd have to take a hot-water bottle with me
Have you gone through the course on google maps. There are some hidden lines you can take.
Especially the first. Don't aim for the open fairway. Cut 45deg left over the trees and a good 200 yards will see you in a tidy spot ;)

I survived out there today :p Wasn't too bad actually, cold at the start of the round for which I had three layers on (thermal top, fleece and light rain jacket) but warmed up towards the middle and played out without my jacket on. Carrying my bag was no bother but it would definitely be advantageous to have a stand one. As it was I either had to make sure it was balanced, still fell over a couple of times, or lay it on the ground. Got held up towards the end of the round having been let through by some earlier groups but made it round in 3.5 hours so not to bad all told.

As for the golf I decided to play off the red (shortest) tee's and not worry about the score. After a dreadful first couple of holes I then made three pars on the spin and the front nine was good overall bar my driving. Ended up leaving the driver in the bag and teeing off with 5 or 6 iron. Back nine a little more mixed but my shot of the day came on the 18th. Par 3 171 yards, playing around 160 to the flag which was front of green. Stroked a lovely 6i into the front edge and two putted for par :)

Nice man, gotta be happy with that.

What type of bag do you use? I used to have to lug a tour bag around until I wised up and brought a nice pencil one. So much lighter and for the price I paid I'm not too bothered about chucking it about.
