+9 today. (gross 80)

Happy enough with that after not playing for nearly 4 weeks due to holiday and manflu.

Birdied 1st hole, double at 5th and 13th. Otherwise fairly solid ball striking today. Happy with pre shot routine from lesson on Thursday - ball striking was pretty solid today.

Our big open tomorrow so looking forward to that.

Shot net 77 yesterday in the medal. Wasn't my best of rounds and definately could have shot a much lower score. Few stupid penalties due to out of bounds and a few duffed shots here and there, all in all pretty positive considering i've only been playing consistently over the past year since lessons many many many years ago.

Went for a full bag fitting at https://epgolfstudios.co.uk/ yesterday.

My goal was mainly to focus on irons, a 3w and driver. In the past I’ve done a couple of fitting at well known retailers.

Ross was my fitter at EP Golf. The entire session lasted a little over 3.5hrs and I likely hit somewhere in the neighbourhood of 350+ shots. I’m beaten up today! I can’t begin to explain how knowledgeable and engaging Ross was through out. The hallmark of a good professional is their ability to take complex subjects and simplify them for their audience. Every combo we tried well explained and my feedback was always taken into account. We tried opposite ends of spectrum to see how I react and adapt to ensure we’re trending in the right direction and that “feel” and “real” are correlated.

I came out of the fitting with a host of surprises that I would never have thought. As an 18 handicap, I was surprised what combos actually worked the best for me.

Irons: My favourite shaft by a mile was the Project X 6.0 (120) rifle which matched up perfectly with my tempo. The head I got along the most with was Srixion ZX5. Comparing that to my current regular (95) mavrik irons, there’s no similarities whatsoever.

3 wood: Ping G430 LST with Kai’Li White 70S. Every shot I hit with this combo off was deck was absolutely middled and an unbelievable dispersion circle. I hit the LST miles better than the regular! Out of all the combos we tried throughout the day, this was by far the winner if I had to pick one.

Driver: Ping G430 10K with Kai’Li White 60S. We certainly found a shaft I love in the Kai’Li. My current Mavrik driver I hate with a passion. There’s no mass in the head and I can never feel the head in space during the swing. The ping and shaft combo let feel the movement of the head throughout the swing and I could just swing stress free. The driver combo shows the biggest advantage over my existing clubs.

Ball: Perhaps the biggest revelation was seeing the difference a ball can make. I would have never have guessed the Titelist AVX is the one for me. Its characteristics gave me the ideal spin numbers from irons to driver and adjusted the ball flight to be more penetrating than ballooning.

Given where we felt we saw the most gains to be had, the most immediate area is going to be a driver replacement so I’ll hopefully be sorting that out soon. Never once did Ross ask me to buy anything from him but I certainly know where I’ll be ordering it from. The 3w, as much as I got along with it, would more be there to fill a distance gap rather make a notable improvement to my game.

One thing I asked Ross was to identify swing mechanics along the way. Turns out he’s an equally good swing coach as he is a fitter. I walked away with a number of easy to replicate drills and once I make those adjustments and knock out some bad habits, I’ll be going back for irons as my swing issues specifically showed up there.

All the above is a long winded way of saying, make the trip, get in for a fitting with Ross. I don’t see a scenario in which you don’t walk away more informed about your game than when you went in. I’ll be making this an annual trend as it’s easily one of the best things I’ve done for my game since I started two years ago.

Went away last week for a family holiday to Pembroke, ended up playing Milford Haven Golf Course whilst I was there, not a bad course but not sure there's much to write home about really, enjoyable game though and walked with a carry back for the first time in ages with no issues from my elbow so that was good!

Back to normal golf today in Bristol with a round in this lovely toasty sun we've got. Played pretty well overall, shot an 89 so 3 shots off my best but very solid and a 41 in the back 9 ties my best for 9 holes.

Driver was playing ball surprisingly, helped by some decently hard ground for bounce/roll out help :) Irons were solid but not quite getting the face closed/that draw I've developed working nicely. But the biggest difference really was the putting, had some pretty dire butting recently but today was decent, 34 putts total so <2 average where I've had a bunch of >40 putt rounds recently

Poor round today. Probably didn't help with 6/7 pints of Moretti last night

Think I shot 84 or something....Holed nothing again today. Can't get speed right at all just now on the greens.

Leading open score was a scratch 67 (net 65).... Course was in good nick and weather was excellent.

Very nice, seen a couple of their YouTube videos. Seem like a good lot.

Do you put any practice in? Mine has become much more consistent since puting in 30/45 minutes on the putting green once a week. Start with some chipping then move onto the putter.

Out for a comp this morning. Could have won if I didn't have a blow up on the short par fours of sixteen/seventeen on which I took doubles. For the second round in a row hit a big draw come hook with my 6i off the tee on sixteen. Only this time straight into the water that separates it from seventeen rather than stopping just short as yesterday. Then unforgivably pulled out driver on seventeen and hit it OB. These are sub 300y holes, it's never driver! Of course playing three of the tee flushed a 6i dead straight into the fairway.

Ended up with 91 gross (net 71/-1 playing off 20). EG showing a score differential of 19.1 so this will be my third best score for handicap purposes. Was down to 21.0 this morning so should be in the 20.x range come tomorrow :)

Trending in the right direction and it looks like messy rounds are have moved down a few shots. Previously a round like that I would have been five shots worse, I've shot 96 without losing a ball yet today I lost three! If the good weather continues there's a low 80's in reach.

Probably not as much as I should :p

Playing a bunch of courses I have a habit of just spending 5-10 mins before 'most' rounds to get used to green speeds, but don't think that's enough.

I used to be 'ok', think I posted a bit ago that I'd class a 36-putt round as being 'average' but it's definitely got worse than that rather than better :(

So yeah, basically I should practice putting more... I actually practice chipping a fair bit but not really enough putting. My locals putting green isn't amazing so might take a trek to Cumberwell to use theirs sometime.

Went along to American Golf today for the Full Game review as it was free and thought why not. Overall very good experience, hit a few of my irons and woods as I felt that I had a big gap at the top of my bag which was demonstrated during the session as I have a 6 iron followed by a 5 wood. Overall pretty good - talked through some potential iron sets that could fit with what i'm after (currently using the x31 wilson set with my own driver/FW) and was pointed more towards the P790 and clubs similar to that, even though i'm currently a 30hcp which is rapidly falling.

One positive is that I was told my iron striking was really good so could probably handle a less forgiving iron. Tempted to drop £25 and go for a full iron fit at a local pro and see what sticks, might add a new set of irons to the list for christmas....

just back from the range today..i had a eureka moment on my last few balls..speed.

Now i know this, and my pro is telling be to slow my backswing down, and when I do, man the ball goes like **** off a shovel, and straight!

I just cant 100% wrap that around my head yet and still swing far, far too fast!

Matchplay quarter finals tonight off front tees (Stutt cup comp)

getting 1 shot against a guy who is know to be a bit of a "hot head".... I've known him for years, he's never changed.

Anyway - lost first hole, we then halved next 4.....

I then birdied 6, 7 and 8 (3/2/3) to go 2 up and he, as expected, started to melt down...... Nothing personal at me, just at himself. So I just wander on in front leaving him to it.

I was 1 up at half way, won 10, won 11 to go 3 up...

On 12 I thought he's potentially blow a gasket when I tramline a 30ft into the middle of the hole for a half!!

Anyway - 3 up with 3 to play, lost 16 to a great 4 from him, but then I got up and down from the bunker for a nice 3 on 17 to win 3&1.

He's a nice guy, but so much swearing and hard on himself. Almost tries to much at times.... If a mouse farted 30 yards away it would be the mouses fault for the bad shot that followed etc..:p

Into the semis now - will see what's next.

Putted lights out tonight to be fair - struck the ball much better as well....

Now that I had a couple of days to reflect on my fitting and think through everything, I'd say for me everything came down to grinding through and finding the right shaft. In the irons, once the shaft was right then switching heads on players distance irons (zx5, p790, 245, etc) were all pretty similar in terms of performance. I agree with the fitter that there's just way too much marketing bs out there. Even for an 18 HCP, the irons all pretty much performed the same once the proper shaft was used across all of them.

However, with the driver, things were more balanced. The shaft certainly had a role but there was also a notable difference in feel of the heads through the swing. My tendency to have a heel miss on one and a toe miss on another were not uncommon. Something that didn't pop up on the iron side at all.

Interestingly, the shaft fitting wasn't done based on swing speed, spin etc. It was done on how I like to load and release the club and needing to feel the mass in the head, not towards the grip.

Makes complete sense - fast swing AT the ball, missing the centre of the face = average ball speed. Slower, smooth swing THROUGH the ball using the centre of the face = better compression and ball flight. I play a lot better when I slow down a LOT. I helpfully have plenty of clubhead speed, so I can bleed some of it off and still get decent carry yardages.

Nothing on @Maccy though, who can hit his 7 iron 190 yards ;)
