Went for a full bag fitting at
https://epgolfstudios.co.uk/ yesterday.
My goal was mainly to focus on irons, a 3w and driver. In the past I’ve done a couple of fitting at well known retailers.
Ross was my fitter at EP Golf. The entire session lasted a little over 3.5hrs and I likely hit somewhere in the neighbourhood of 350+ shots. I’m beaten up today! I can’t begin to explain how knowledgeable and engaging Ross was through out. The hallmark of a good professional is their ability to take complex subjects and simplify them for their audience. Every combo we tried well explained and my feedback was always taken into account. We tried opposite ends of spectrum to see how I react and adapt to ensure we’re trending in the right direction and that “feel” and “real” are correlated.
I came out of the fitting with a host of surprises that I would never have thought. As an 18 handicap, I was surprised what combos actually worked the best for me.
Irons: My favourite shaft by a mile was the Project X 6.0 (120) rifle which matched up perfectly with my tempo. The head I got along the most with was Srixion ZX5. Comparing that to my current regular (95) mavrik irons, there’s no similarities whatsoever.
3 wood: Ping G430 LST with Kai’Li White 70S. Every shot I hit with this combo off was deck was absolutely middled and an unbelievable dispersion circle. I hit the LST miles better than the regular! Out of all the combos we tried throughout the day, this was by far the winner if I had to pick one.
Driver: Ping G430 10K with Kai’Li White 60S. We certainly found a shaft I love in the Kai’Li. My current Mavrik driver I hate with a passion. There’s no mass in the head and I can never feel the head in space during the swing. The ping and shaft combo let feel the movement of the head throughout the swing and I could just swing stress free. The driver combo shows the biggest advantage over my existing clubs.
Ball: Perhaps the biggest revelation was seeing the difference a ball can make. I would have never have guessed the Titelist AVX is the one for me. Its characteristics gave me the ideal spin numbers from irons to driver and adjusted the ball flight to be more penetrating than ballooning.
Given where we felt we saw the most gains to be had, the most immediate area is going to be a driver replacement so I’ll hopefully be sorting that out soon. Never once did Ross ask me to buy anything from him but I certainly know where I’ll be ordering it from. The 3w, as much as I got along with it, would more be there to fill a distance gap rather make a notable improvement to my game.
One thing I asked Ross was to identify swing mechanics along the way. Turns out he’s an equally good swing coach as he is a fitter. I walked away with a number of easy to replicate drills and once I make those adjustments and knock out some bad habits, I’ll be going back for irons as my swing issues specifically showed up there.
All the above is a long winded way of saying, make the trip, get in for a fitting with Ross. I don’t see a scenario in which you don’t walk away more informed about your game than when you went in. I’ll be making this an annual trend as it’s easily one of the best things I’ve done for my game since I started two years ago.
