Golf Thread

Played two rounds at Oulton Hall near Leeds this weekend as part of a golf break with my dad and brothers - bit of an annual tradition. First round was awful, shot 116 after a lesson earlier in the week left me questioning various bits of my swing. I spent half an hour hitting some balls on the range before round 2 this morning to get some confidence back. I went out in 43 including two pars and a birdie. Probably my best 9 holes of golf ever since I’ve never broken 100. I’d shot 36 through the first 6 of the back 9 when we had to call it a day because the speed of play of the groups ahead was awful. It became an issue around the 12th and just got worse with loads of traffic and backing up. It made it very hard to keep up any sort of rhythm and keep warm. The course did a really poor job of managing it and keeping the groups moving, so I will be mentioning that to them.

It definitely got in my head when it became obvious we wouldn’t finish the round and impacted my play on the back 9. Taking the positives though, I know cracking 100 will definitely happen and 90 doesn’t feel far off with some solid practice over the winter.

Struggled Friday to find anywhere local which was open after all the rain we'd had. Ended up traveling to The Shropshire in Telford.

It has 3 x 9 holes where you choose to play two. We went out on the Silver+Blue course. Also in the bag was a ProV1- (left dash). Same feel as a ProV1x but less spin. It helped cut through the wind that's for sure.
First 9 I hit a steady 42 (35) +7. Left a few puts short with was frustrating but then the second 9 (blue course) I played some sublime golf. Came in with 2 bogies, 2 birdies and 5 pars to hit a level par 36

Handicap now sitting at 11.3 which I'm pleased with

I have my knockout final tomorrow (first final) hopefully the course is open because the weather today is forecast to just rain, rain and more rain. Head Pro was saying clean and replace will be on from next weekend which to be fair probably just have happened from this weekend.

'clean and replace' - am I just old or is that an American phrase for preferred lies?

Double Eagle... So wrong. You should be ashamed :p

Played at Dunstable Downs today, bit damp, very windy and a new/long (ish) course so wasn't really expecting much but I did pretty damn well if I say so myself.

Shot 88, +18 which is 18.9 score differential on EG so another drop incoming \o/

Pretty decent course, some really tricky holes but very playable if that makes sense? Going off the fairway was punishing in that the rough was kinda thick/lush but you'd find the ball and be able to hit an 8i or whatever to make progress at least. Definitely also played the wind, few long holes into wind and the final par 3 was a heavy cross wind, thought I'd hit a decent shot but it went from the right side of the green to the left with the wind.

Good times, and I got second place on the day for a box of Srixon Z-Star XV's :)

Oh, to whoever said they didn't really like AD333's cause they didn't hold up well I finally get it :p I usually lose them but keeping 1 ball all round and it's in pretty rough shape at this point!

I think today will be the first day this side of spring that our course will be closed. So much rain has fallen in the last 36 hours and it still hasn't stopped. Matchplay final moved to Thursday for me weather permitting.

Played yesterday and despite the conditions, wasn't a terrible round at 105. Really happy with my tee shots now but of course the golf gods have rewarded me with terrible chipping around the green and putting.

I am convinced my putter isn't helping me so going to try something new.

Well I lost the final 5&4 which on paper looks like a hammering ... and it was. The annoying thing was I just didn't play poorly he played out of his skin. He walked off 1 over and I was 6 over which is well below my handicap. Ahh never mind.

When the other player is on fire then there's nothing you can do about it - at least you know you never really had a chance and it wasn't down to anything you did.

Yeah I've lost games in the past and thought wow did I play bed but I was playing pretty well. He used to be a scratch golfer who's now getting 9 shots so if he plays well I have no chance.

This morning I had a 'Full Game Review' at American Golf, got an email a bit ago cause I'm on the spamlist and thought why not for the lols, had no idea what to expect and was kinda expecting maybe a bit of a sales pitch.

It was kind of a nothing really :p Hit a bunch of shots with both irons and driver, discussed various elements of the game/equipment but ultimately it was just hit balls on a trackman for an hour for free, so good times :D Amusingly I was saying about my driver not really playing ball these days then first two I hit were dead straight and 210 carry which is decent for me...

I even mentioned I was thinking of maybe a new driver in the new year, and even starting to consider new irons now I'm down to an 19hcp and hitting them well. His thoughts on the driver was that it wasn't a problem/didn't 'need' replacement, basically my swing is the issue, shock. Irons wise I mentioned P790's/ZX5's and he thought they'd be only a mild improvement and more of a sideways move from my Dynapowers.

I'll probably get some new stuff next year anyway cause I wanna spend money/get shiny things but hey, nice to know I don't actually need to.

The onto Shrivenham for a round, they've closed 5, 6 and 7 (again) with this rain so no card and no comp kinda felt a bit meh, lacking focus and trying silly shots, nice to be out and the weather was good but meh round scoring wise.

I have picked up a new rangefinder, the Garmin Approach Z30, mostly for the 'range relay' stuff, first time trying that today and it does what it says on the tin really, nice to use and a bit of an improvement over my old cheapo chinese basic one as well as the updates on the watch which hopefully will lead to better putting stats going forward so that's good reason surely... Not worth £370 really but hey, as above new shiny things ftw :D

Played a few 9 holes over the last week or so, and haven’t really even wanted to read this thread with how bad my ball striking has been  I’m still very new to golf but very frustrating when you know you can strike the ball “ok” but you’re just topping and shanking everything!

But played 18 at a nice local course with the business partner today and hit some really nice shots, hit at least one nice shot with every club, so I’m back to being hooked properly haha!

Score 126 and didn’t lose a ball, which is an improvement over my 133 through 18 a few weeks ago, where I lost all the balls in my bag!

Baby steps!

Hit my business partners irons, titleist APsomething, and they felt SO much nicer than my ancient Ping G2’s, the temptation to buy new clubs is VERY high :o

Out for golf again today, actually some nice weather for a few days in a row! Buggies off paths and everything, happy days.

So played 18 in Bristol first, first 11 holes were great, +8, then the 12th happened, we don't talk about the 12th, then some ok golf before the 17th happened, not really that bad just thought I could get a 9 iron to the green into a headwind and it just ballooned up and dropped short in the water, turns out 8 iron was definitely the right club, finished with a par. Overall +87, not absolutely terrible but not great either.

Then to my local for a roll-up, they've changed the format so no defined times just anybody can do it at any time during the day, good bit is way more people but bad is I don't really 'know' that many people there (well enough to play with, not really enough to book alongside) but turned up and tagged onto a group so all good.

Birdie'd the first hole! First time ever, it's a tricky hole but 5 wood, 8 iron, 5 wood left me 4 foot from the hole, almost a tap in :p Then a blob on the 2nd to bring me back down to earth. On the 8th I hit a lovely second that landed less than a foot from the flag and somehow rolled past for a ~0.5 foot tap-in birdie. Overall +8 and 17 points, not too bad.

Tomorrow is the Young Guns Vs Old Codgers match, 8am shotgun start, losers buy fish and chips :p

Put my back out on Monday so been on enforced rest. Decided to forgo playing in the monthly medal this morning as while it was starting to show signs of improvement on Wednesday I didn't want to chance it. Good news is its continued to improve so booked an afternoon tee time today to test it out as I did put myself down for the clubs Autumn Trophy tomorrow. Sadly the forecast tomorrow is for rain while its been beautiful this morning. Typical British weather!
