Young Guns vs Old Codgers today and I did not show up to the match :p Even though I do a bunch of comps a 2v2 better ball still affected me, as soon as we'd lost (3&2) we played out the rest of the course and I could suddenly hit the ball like I want/know I can... Still good fun and a nice match, overall it was 5.5 v 5.5 so a tie.

Weather was lovely too, 8am start so a bit 'fresh' with some dew and even a bit of mist

One thing though is I thought/assumed it was a 9 hole match, but it was 18... I played 18 on Thursday (walking), 18 buggying and 9 walking yesterday, 18 walking today and 18 walking tomorrow. Bad planning that :p

Another round, another ********.

Caught a bad case of the shanks. Probably dropped about a dozen shots from shanky chips and duffs around the green, and left a few easy putts short which left me scrapping. Would have been low 80s if none of the above happened but ended up with a 94...

Only lost three balls over the past two rounds so at least that's an improvement...

Another frustrating round today, just can't put two good nines together at the moment

Out in 46 (18 pts) which is solid for me and came despite a blob at the 8th. Nearly put my drive OB and took two to get back on the fairway. Still would have had a chance at a point if not for leaking my 3w right and creeping into the trees.

Back nine just couldn't get anything going. Opened up with four straight bogeys before a poor double on fourteen which should have been a straight forward par 5. Again found the trees with my 3w and had to come out sideways. Then wrong club selection at the par 3 15th. Finally made a par on sixteen before blowing up my card on the next. Tightest tee shot on the course on what is a short par 4. Purely mental but I get on the tee and it's like I forget how to swing, ridiculous

Back in 48 (14 pts) which is a good six shots worse then I should be. At least the rain held off, drizzle at times and a little breezy but good conditions overall. As evidenced by the top two on the leaderboard scoring 40 and a glut of two's. And my back was ok.

Good to hear the back was ok though @stephenb

I was out for the society round yesterday, Cumberwell Park playing the new white course twice, it's a pretty short course (~5100 yards playing it twice) but needs accuracy and plays really nicely so was good fun.

Pretty high scoring overall though, 11 people and lowest was 34 points, highest was a 3-way tie on 41 points.

I got 41 points. I came third. Countback sucks :p

Had a very good year in the society though, they count the 8 best scores (of like 13-15 rounds ish) and my current counting scores are 4x 38's, 39, 40, 41 and 43 :D Helps that I started the year at something like a 32 handicap (they keep their own, by my EG was around there and it's never that far off, but can lag a bit) then as I improved the handicap did lag a bit leading to things like the 43 but it's now down to a 19.2 (same as EG) before yesterday and I'll probably get at least a 1-shot cut for my efforts. Winner gets a minimum 2 shot cut.

Not planning to do quite as much next weekend... Got a lesson on Wednesday and then Friday I'm playing Isle of Purbeck with the Mizuno Golf Pairs comp thing, really looking forward to that :)

Just here to post the weekly “Had an amazing range session and I’ve finally got it all worked out and will probably break 70 on my next round post!” :p:cry:

Also went to my local golf shop on Sunday as decided I wanted some wedges, as my current Ping G2 SW just gives me zero confidence around the greens.

Went in for two wedges, probably Vokey after using a friends for a few rounds.

After 90 minutes on the sim, ended up walking out after ordering a new set of Taylormade P790’s (6-PW) and a 50, 54 and 58 Vokey SM10 :o

Honestly not sure what happened but it’s just felt right

Heard such mixed things about p790. I really hope you didnt pick them just because they went far!

I said that I didn’t want “game improvement” irons, despite them being probably what I need right now.

I hit the p790s, the Ping i530’s, the Callaway AI smoke’s and the Callaway Apex.

I actually hit the i530s a good 15-20 yards further than the p790’s, but the mis hits were spraying all over place.

The p790s just felt so nice, was carrying a distance I was happy with on centred strikes (150-160 7 iron) but my mishits were never more than 10 yards or so off line :)

Did the fitter pick those for you to try? Surprised there was no Titleist in there.

However, glad you are happy with them, may the golf gods be with you on the course with them hah.

Did both a gapping session and had a lesson earlier this week, Monday and Tuesday respectively.

In the gapping session it largely came out how expected but I managed to knacker myself out :p Was trying to do SW to 5i, but by the time I got to the 6i I was cooked so yeah... Confirmed I've gained a bunch of distance \o/

The lesson was interesting, I wasn't sure I'd done enough with my path really since the last lesson but he seemed happy and the output was two things. One is that my right hand on the grip is a little 'strong'/open and he'd like that more neutral, been trying that and it's definitely a change but gonna keep at it. Secondly and more importantly he wants me to work on restricting my backswing, I've known for a while that I've got a habit of going 'too far' and the width/arms collapsing at the top so need to put a stop to that.

So then out today for a round at Stockwood Vale, was hoping to use a buggy but it was walk or not play so I walked, quite a few hills makes it a tough one really, but good to do in a lot of ways. Game wise I was definitely suffering a bit from the swing tweaks, the right has crept back in as a miss where with that strong grip I'd basically elimated it but on the other hand brought in a pull-hook miss so yeah... Anyway, scored 95, PB on that course is 89 so nothing spectacular but not terrible, considering how some of the holes went that's kinda surprising :p

Tomorrow is Isle of Purbeck with Mizuno Golf Pairs, played it last year and it's a lovely course with great views, weather looks decent with maybe some showers so looking forward to that one :D

He stuck a load of hands on my clubs, the P790s felt the best haha

My exact words were “I do need some wedges to improve my game, but I could be talked into some new irons so…”:cry:

Playing in a 'Triple Challange' on Sunday. 6 holes Foursomes, 6x Greensomes and 6x Fourballs. I'm partnered with a much lower handicaper so as a team we're currently set to play off 11. Not played in one before so would welcome any thoughts on tactics, it's stableford scoring. My initial thinking is holes that we can both reach GIR play as Fourballs, I'm assuming we get to pick which holes we play in each format, to maximize our chance of a good score. Greensomes on holes with a tricky tee shot and Foursomes for the rest.

Now that the good playing season is coming to a close, what are some things you guys working on over the winter?

I’ll start. Found a local coach who’s working with my natural body mechanics rather than trying to make me look like Adam Scott for example. That’s had an immediate benefit in ball striking. My main area aside working more with him is staying connected through the swing and keeping my arm structure. It’s all about staying connected and committed to the swing even if the outcome is bad until the muscle memory adapts.

I’ve also trimmed the bag down to 9 clubs and that’s been great tbh.

Iron striking consistency for me I think, would be nice to be able to have a consistent straight or draw with most of them rather than a random push/hook!

Isle of Purbeck yesterday was mixed, course, views and weather were lovely, game was not quite there and it's so much harder than anything else I usually play... Score wise I shot 106 I think (waiting for EG for the proper adjusted score, several pickups) but compared to last years 123 that's still a 17 shot improvement... Next year I might break 100!!! :p

Sounds really interesting, think your strategy seems sound too, good luck :)

I don't really stop playing long enough to focus on improving tbh :p

Did have the lesson this week so short term gonna focus on those things but really just keep playing and keep improving in general :)

Two or three things for winter time for me.

I want to nail down a preshot routine.... Whatever it is. I must repeat it all the time.
Club path - keep working on my club path - Spend some time on the trackman indoor place near me to work on that.
really dial in my numbers - I know all my irons roughly but again really dial in the numbers.

Going to work on speed training providing my body holds up. That and have a couple of lessons to hopefully improve the swing. Distance is definitely a barrier to my potential to make more greens in reg so seems only prudent to work on it.

As for this mornings golf objectively a good round. 88 (+17, 34pts) adjusted and will be a counter bringing me down to 17 on the dot. I've not shot in the eighties for a while but had blow ups at both of the easier par 5's. Could have been a really good round otherwise.

What I have started doing is talking to myself. Especially telling myself to keep my eye on the ball through impact. I also then don't practice a full swing. Just a ½ swing to practice path.
Lately it has worked and keeps me focused on my ball.

yeah - it's funny cause I have a drilled in putting routine - every time - 2ft/20ft etc.

Just need to do that same for every other club in the bag - it's mainly preshot stuff. Just get something that is repeatable.

Decent weather today - almost the last comp of the year and feel a bit sick....

Stableford, but level par thru 12, then dropped 5 shots in next 3 holes, and lipped out 2 putts on 17 & 18th for bogies..... Should have been a 73/74 today.

Hit ball well all things considered - just a couple of poor swings cost me a great round. Still probably get a cut mind you.
