I seem to have unlocked the driver ability in my last couple of rounds. Course was wet so pretty much 0 roll but was hitting it 250 onto the fairway on all but one drives today (adjusting for wind, eg some went 230 into the wind and others a tad over 260 with the wind). Feeling pretty good about my game, didn't visit the range this week either as I somehow feel that actually makes me play worse on the course so I'll just focus on getting a game in when the weather is ok and doing some drills in the house.

Have you played Thornton yet? We managed to get a round for £25 yesterday and it's a great wee course - held up really well considering the time of year.

Played well enough that my handicap has actually come down instead of going up for once...

Seriously contemplating not rejoining my club next year. I joined 2 years ago as the price was reasonable, it went up in my first year and second and I forsee a third.

Two reasons really, I joined to be more competitive but it turns out I suck at comps and perform well under my handicap on every one.
Also the price of a membership is slowly out stripping the actual cost of just paying to play. To actual see a decent saving you have to dedicate so much time to make it seem worth while.

Both these reasons are sucking the enjoyment from the game for me. I think I'd rather just pay to play and enjoy different clubs with different friends rather than feeling locked in, with seemingly no benefit unless I play 90 rounds a year

Back at Enville tomorrow and hopefully get my membership application signed and submitted. Hope the wait isn't too long although they say it's about 8 to 12months

Playing their Lodge Course tomorrow which measures a little under 6200y Par 71 from the Yellow Tees.
On a night shift tonight so will be playing after only 2 ½ hrs sleep. I hope I manage to be awake enough to play ok

Well yesterday was fun at Envlille.
Have tagged along with what they call themselves the Wednesday Bandits. Great group and some good laughs. My front 9 was terrible. only scores 9 points playing off 13 (11 official).
I blamed 2 ½ hours sleep and no warm up or golf played for almost 2 weeks
Back 9 much better. Shot 18 points so was pretty pleased in the end.

What was nice to see were two lads whose handicaps were 1.7 and +3.5. The second has represented England and only 21 years of age. Watching him play was special. He was disappointed when he came in 4 under

Also membership form has been submitted so now the wait.

Not had the chance to play anywhere else recently, just been getting some rounds in at Glenrothes and Auchterderran, playing those two works quite well as it gives a good chance of getting all the clubs out of the bag as you tend to have to play longer iron approaches at Glenrothes but a lot of short irons at Auchterderran which has massively improved my 8 iron down game.

Weather looks good for the weekend so going to hopefully get at least 18 in.

Glenrothes is holding up quite well, mats on the tees of the par 3's but everything else is still normal tees and greens although I expect winter greens will be in operation soon.

We're out at Glenrothes first thing on Sunday, first time I've played there in over a year so hopefully haven't forgotten too much about it! The 2nd has to be one of my least favourite holes on the course.

I'm playing early afternoon on Sunday, my son wont be out his bed early enough to get an AM time. Never been a massive fan of the 2nd as getting it on the fairway is quite tough. Course was holding up well when we played it last week, a bit soft on the fairway in places on the front 9 but overall in good condition for the time of year. Only other thing of notes is that some parts of the course had a lot of leaves on the ground which made finding the ball a bit tricky at times.

Had a nice trip to Portugal recently, Saturday until Thursday, went to the Amendoeira resort with some of the usual golf group and it was really good. Two full 18 hole courses, the Faldo was the harder course with some daunting looking carries and the O'Connor Jr course was still long and challenging but a bit safer looking off the tee. We also played the par 3 academy course quite a bit and I really enjoyed that, holes were ~50-100m depending on tee box so a nice mix of shots but mostly partial wedges which was nice. Even the non-golf stuff was good, food was great, service nice, we had a 4-bed villa and that was huge. Definitely would reccommend :)

Then today I played at Burnham Beeches GC, bit chillier than Portugal but really nice course and in good condition, shot an 86! Par 70/+16 where my 19.4 HCP gave a 22 course handicap so decent! Weirdly I wasn't really striking it that well, especially at the start, but my chipping and putting was on-point, 30 putts total, only 13 on the front 9, where I was +5 :D

Does anyone have or has used a Spurk Golf mat? Mats are enforced at the local course over the winter, this mat looks like a good alternative to the floppy ones that move around..
Our club sells them, theyre ok but no better than cheaper ones imo, the bungee cord they come with is next to useless as they are too loose unless you go uber tight with it, better having a hole punched and a caribiner or something on it.

Yeah I got one for this winter but we're not on fairway mats yet, will report back. Played with a few guys last year who recommended it.

I've got one of those plastic launch mats which is good for full shots but not good for finesse shots, I was planning on using the spurk mat for pitching.

As brendy mentioned the solution they've given with the bungee cord to attach it to the bag seems completely useless

Woohoo, 37pts in the weekly roll up this morning (85/+14). Got my swing back and continued the good putting of the last couple of weeks. Best I've played and scored in ages :). Helped by very benign conditions and a course in excellent condition. Handicap will be heading back below 17.

Winner today looks like they've had the round of their life. 43pts off 12 including 2x two's!

Shot 14o today and had an absolute nightmare on the par 3. I was 7 over on them alone. Felt like I should have been 7 over max..

Also bought a ball retriever from Temu, and like all cheap Chinese tat, it's a 50/50 shots on quality..

Metal is good, but the plastic head is solid as a rock and does not fit around a ball what so ever. Might heat it up and try and stretch it.. Piece of crap. Lucky it was less than a tenner.

Purchased my ball retriever from EBay, it may not be as solid as my first but it does its job reasonably well, and for less than £7

Out this morning, surprisingly quiet, played the same tees as yesterday. Would have bested my score from yesterday but for going for it at the last, second shot over the corner of the dog leg to the green just caught the top of the tallest tree and was lost! Really happy with my game at the moment.

Targets for the winter:
Try and keep my handicap under 18, currently 16.8 but with two good scores to drop off shortly.
Keep going with the swing speed training. It's only been three weeks but already feel my driving is improving. Hit a number yesterday and today which I would have been impressed with in the summer.
Get some lessons.

P.S. 7 woods rule :p

Out today for a society game and a bit of a bump back down to earth after Friday :p

Didn't think I played that badly but putting was decidedly mediorce (30 on Friday, 39 today) and although I hit some really good shots I also had plenty of duffs/poor decisions to cost me, but hey, it was dry and not too cold or muddy, can't complain :)

How did you get on, was a bit concerned when I saw the 1st was on a winter green which was useless but the rest of the course was on normal greens and they seemed to be doing fine. I noticed they've moved the yellow tees to where the red tees are as well but we just played off the whites which they've moved where the yellows are typically. Played pretty well all in all once I'd warmed up properly. Highlight of the round was on the 12th when I smashed it 272 off the tee. Decided to call it at day after the 12th as my son had had enough and his feet were soaking due to poor footwear choicee.
