Golf Thread

How did you get on, was a bit concerned when I saw the 1st was on a winter green which was useless but the rest of the course was on normal greens and they seemed to be doing fine. I noticed they've moved the yellow tees to where the red tees are as well but we just played off the whites which they've moved where the yellows are typically. Played pretty well all in all once I'd warmed up properly. Highlight of the round was on the 12th when I smashed it 272 off the tee. Decided to call it at day after the 12th as my son had had enough and his feet were soaking due to poor footwear choicee.
We had to bail. I'd been horrendously unwell on the Friday night/Saturday morning which dragged into Sunday and my mate is absolutely crippled with sciatica. I would have maybe managed but I think the back 9 probably would have been too much considering how hilly it is.

Went to Wellsgreen instead just to get a swing in and try get my driving firing seeing as it's gone pear-shaped again. Famous last words but I seem to have sussed it out...

Started to put together a DIY net in the garage. I don't have a lot of space, due to other items in there. Kept it simple for now with a net and hitting mat but I need a decent mat, anyone have a good one that isn't too small. IDeally at least 60cmx60cm.

New driver purchased
Went to a Titleist fitting centre in Celtic Manor today.
Had an hour to try out some of the GT series, - went in with the idea that if I only gain a couple of yards against my Ping G425, I won't order anything.
Ended up coming out with an order for the GT3 with a Tensei Blue shaft, just need it to arrive, sooner please! :p

Seems that my Ping was a bit too spiny for me and was dropping me back about 20yards compared to the GT3
Spin eventually came down to about 2200-2500 and I was carrying it just as far as my Ping Total Distance.

Looking forward to playing it now :D
My good wife has said she'll pay for it too, so Christmas has come early! :)

I was looking at my Golfshot stats earlier and since taking up golf "properly" following lockdown I've managed to play 498 rounds over 55 different courses in Scotland and England. Primarily in the Yorkshire area. Not bad going for 4 years I don't think. So many hours spent playing gold though :D

You appear near me as I’ve played a fair few of the above and also in the South Yorkshire. What’s your favourite budget friendly courses ?

I'm quite biased because my "home" course is Barnsley and it's a muni but it's the best muni I've played on by far. Gets a bit wet in winter (don't they all) but in summer its brilliant.

A bit further a field Filey is a really nice course and I think that's only about £25 a go.

Roundwood, but play sandhill, college pines, wath, and Tankersley a fair bit.

I used a Forbes mat and rubber base, 5ft x 5ft, expensive but top equipment, will last years!

Out of interest what did you think of Woolley Park? Asking as I've been subbed to James Robinson Golf on youtube for quite a while now and 99% of his regular videos are shot there.

It's a nice course but it's nothing special. He does do his videos there. They had a bit of vandalism ruining a couple of greens a while back and they took a while to recover. The rough can be pretty hard work in the summer. It used to be about £25 a round at the weekend but I think it's closer to £50 now if you don't go with a member. Its actually only half a mile down the road from my course which I prefer.

I've somehow never heard of Roundwood and just looked where it is and it's not far at all. Had Tankersley on my to do list for a while and I'm going to College Pines at the end of the month weather permitting. Before I became a member anywhere Sandhill was my go to course.

It’s a cheap no thrills place local to me. Sandhill is decent, Tankersley is amazing in the summer probably my favourite of the bunch.

Quite the landmark for me this morning, I won the club comp (Stableford) at the weekend and my handicap has gone down to 10.0. Just .1 and I can call myself a single digit handicap. Not bad to say I was 17.7 at the start of the year. Dead chuffed with that.

That's some drop - congrats....

Must be one of the biggest I've ever seen/heard of in a single year.

If you had to review your own year - what 3 things would you say has been such an improvement.... Just curious what you would put it down too

3 things lets think?

1st - be absolutely horrendous the year previous :D (I was at 15 getting worse last summer then finished at 17.7)

2nd - get lessons, I've had numerous lessons with a pro who I really understand (tried a few but they tried to change too much too quickly)

3rd - practice, practice and more practice. Sounds a bit cliche but you don't get better not playing. I had a real struggle for a month of 2 in the summer but I've managed to get through that.

Monthly stableford this morning. Generally played solid throughout, picked up points on every hole but just couldn't get anything going. Ended up shooting 91 gross for 33 pts.

Will lose a good score overnight so handicap will be up .5 in the morning. Then a couple more rounds untill my PB drops off. Hopefully can get another good score in the 80's before then to keep my index under 18. Another chance tomorrow. To think this time last year course was under water!

is it not lift clean and place ? If so how can you have scores for handicap counting?

Under England Golf at least the preferred lies local rule doesn't block scores being entered for handicaps, they've even just adjusted it so that clubs can do preferred lies at any time of year. I think you can even put in scores using upto 2 temporary greens (on 18 holes), and off mats...

Played the first Winter Greensomes match yesterday, really close match where we went up a couple of times but they got it back square on the 8th so going down the last hole it was even and they had a shot... In the end they didn't need the shot, they par'd it and we bogied it. Not quite the semi-finals we managed last year :p Good fun game though and close so can't complain :)
