Golf Thread

This mornings round characterised by real stupidity  Started on the first where after an atrocious tee shot I wasn't able to hit my usual lay up. After punching one back onto the fairway from back of the tree in front of me I was a good ten yards back of where I would have like to been at a minimum for my third shot. I don't know why I didn't take my medicine but went for the green and came up short into the ditch that guards the front. Should have laid up and at worst got a point, two if I could have got up and down. Terrible three putt at the second hole for a point, a less bad but still dissapointing three put at the third for two points..... Thought things were picking up when I made three for 3 at the fourth but then some more errant shots had me scoring a total of 12 points for the front nine.

Back nine didn't start much better after I put my approach on ten into the water right of the green. Dropped and chipped to about 1ft. Thinking my round had gone already I went to tap it in with my wedge and missed :o, an easy point lost. Lesson learned as I then started playing great, holing some putts and was sitting on 17 points after making a birdie on sixteen. Unfortunately blew up on seventeen, my nemesis, before adding two to my tally on eighteen. 31 pts total which could so easily have been 4/5 more were it not for my idiocy, which could have been enough to win the comp (35pts was leading at last count)!

I purchased a cheap/beginner set of clubs from American Golf a few months ago, Rife RX Max, to get me back into the game. They are good to start with but I'm seeing a lot of offers on iron sets at the moment, COBRA King LTDx, COBRA King SPEEDZONE, TaylorMade SIM2 MAX to name a few each around 40% off new or a little cheaper second hand. Is it worth buying into a decent iron set like these now (including a second hand iron set, different to those listed) and getting used to playing them or stick with what I have and replace later?

Just to add-on, I've seen the Cobra Air-X iron set which look decent for £300. Anyone have experience with them?

^ What scores are you shooting, how consistent is your ball striking, do you have a regular shot shape?

Impossible to recommend anything without knowing about your game. Seeing a PGA Pro, getting a lesson and asking them for advice would be my recommendation.

I'll ask at next lesson. I suspect I'm better off with what I have now than buying new ones. Only thought about them due to the prices currently.

Note: I am bad a golf, don't take any advice from me :p

Unless you're shooting under 100 regularly, the only reason to upgrade from a "starter set" is because you want shiny new things and you have the money, which is a perfectly valid excuse in my opinion! :p

Always worth spending money on a hobby you enjoy and you can't take the money with you, so if you've got the money, go for it (after speaking to your pro) :D

Not necessarily - need to consider people's height/build/age, as well.

I'm 6'5 so when I got rid of my crappy starter set for a set of irons that actually fitted me lengthwise with the correct shaft, my score started tumbling.

That and like you said, shiny new things are fun...

Yeah of course, there's obviously a million things that go into the decision for sure, I'm 6'3" and was lucky to inherit some old Ping G2's which were 1" longer.

Should I have gone out and bought a set of P790's due to my game out growing them? Absolutely not! Are they shiny and make me feel better at golf? 10000% :D

I still think there is a lot of elitism in golf, which is fine if you have the time and cash to playing every week, being a member etc etc.

But think that can sometimes come across as gatekeeping the sport, which is just a hobby for a lot of people :)

When I was cycling a lot, the rule was N+1 :D, where the number of bikes is N so in theory I should always have a lot. Obviously I had 1 bike but that didn't stop my looking when sales were on, or for new parts. I'll have a think as I can afford to buy some new and my logic is that I'll grow more with a decent set compared to a completely beginner set.

Exactly that!

Every knows that the more you spend on a hobby, the better you are at it :p

Whatever you do don't buy online, your local golf shop will probably be free fitting, and you can then go and try out some clubs.

My betting is you'll end up buying Taylormade P790s or Titleist T200s :p

Definitely the above with regards to getting fit, and that also could influence the decision...

If the fitting shows you would benefit from longer/shorter clubs, or a non-standard lie angle, then that leans much further into new clubs than if everything is standard, except the shiny new things factor :p

FWIW I started golf back in August 2022 then in June 2023 I got fitted for and bought a new iron set being the Wilson Dynapowers, at the time my handicap was 41!

My handicap is now 18.6 and I don't really think the Dynapowers are holding me back or anything (being a full 'game improvement', as opposed to the P790/T200's mentioned above) but at the same time my swing/ability/striking has improved to the point I definitely could deal with a much more 'players' set of irons. So that'll happen sometime in spring at a guess :D

it does seem like that for a lot "custom" fits....

Brands like Mizuno / Srixon / Cobra / wilson don't get much love but have some awesome products

I really liked the Srixon ZX-4 MkII's when I got fitted, ended up with the Dynapowers exclusively for cost, think it was something like £250 extra for the Srixons. The Dynapowers are great but part of me kinda regrets not going with my heart :p

Definitely gonna be trying the ZX5/ZX7's when I get around to changing!

From when I was looking at new clubs, the P790s and T200s always reviewed well from multiple different places. I do think that they're just one of the better irons around at the moment, that and they look really nice too!

I really shouldn't have spent as much as I did tbh, but my thinking was that these irons would last me 15-20 years, so might as well get exactly what I want rather than getting some GI irons and feeling like I want some "players" irons in 2-3 years time.

Still absolutely addicted to golf, even now the weather is rubbish, all I can think about is when I'm playing next and go to sleep thinking about how to play the course I'm playing next  :o

Let me know what it’s like!

It seems to be quite feature packed for the price, considering some launch monitors from other brands are topping the £1000 mark!

Will do buddy, hope to get it to the range later this week. I was using a MLM before which is a great budget option, but the MLM2 Pro is on another level of detail.
