Hanns-G HG281DP 28" Widescreen Any good, really??

No 1080p is 1920×1080 so it will be upscaled to match the monitors res of 1920x1200 so the picture will be stretched.

1080p is 1980 by 1200 right? And the xbox 360 does 1080p natively via VGA? And the monitor res is that right? So it would be 1:1 pixel matching on my layout?

1080p is 1920x1080. Some 16:10 1920x1200 monitors support displaying 1080p natively with a display aspect ratio of 16:9 and with 1:1 pixel mapping. The Hanns G 28" doesn't, it stretches the 1080 tall image vertically to 1200. Displaying with 1:1 pixel mapping should be vastly sharper than any rescaling and as such this is a big minus for the Hanns G monitor in my opinion.

I don't know about the 360 but have a read of what people have been saying about it in this thread.

I would agree and paying a lot more for the Viewsonic is a frustration. However, if I'm paying a lot for a monitor upgrade anyway, I intend it to be an investment. I want to hook up a PS3 to it, so if the monitor will stretch the image vertically to 1920x1200, in the long run I would rather pay more for one that doesn't.

Do you have any suggestions for alternative screens available from OcUK that will display 1080p from a PS3 without stretching?

Gibbo: It would be useful if monitors capable of 1:1 pixel mapping for 16:9 1080p were clearly marked as such on the store.

From what I can gather, the least expensive 24" monitor with HDMI/HDCP to possibly support 1:1 pixel mapping is the LG L246WH. Though the LG site doesn't mention 16:9, it talks about 4:3. After looking in the manual it seems it supports 1:1/original aspect ratio/full screen when connected to either HDMI from a PC or RGB. It supports original aspect ratio/full screen when connected to HDMI from some video source or component.

The Belinea o.display 24" on the Belinea website suggests that it displays lower resolutions at full screen.

The Samsung SM-2493HM and T240 (and one would assume the rest of these ranges) can display either full screen stretched or according to the aspect ratio of the input signal. (This information was found in the user manual under the heading "Image Size".)

Here are the aspect setting for the ViewSonic,

And you can see the black bars at the bottom and top, if you didn’t have 1:1 mapping the picture would be stretched by a fair bit.

Sorry for the poor quality pics taken off my Nokia phone, and for going slightly off topic :D

I expect 16:9 would work as well as 1:1. I would expect that 1:1 would display 720p as 1280x720 in the middle of the screen area with black bars all around, whereas 16:9 would up-scale 720p to 1920x1080, which some people may want.

what size/model is the viewsonic ?

It’s the VX2835wm model which is 28' although 27.5 viewable, worth every penny I paid for it :D

I think it probably does, I don’t have use for 720p so 1:1 mapping is perfect for me :)

Just wondering if its possible.

I am considering one, hopefully HDMI - PC, VGA - VMWare box, 360 - comp

That would work perfect, I have tried my Xbox through VGA, Component and HDMI and they all work fine, HDMI is the better one as it seems sharper but component is just as good :)
