Hanns-G HG281DP 28" Widescreen Any good, really??

Yeah I also sit on the bed to watch stuff and its fine. No real problems whatsoever. Also yes the monitor is very tiltable, its impressively easy to adjust. As for backlight bleed, there isnt any on mine really. But the blacks are dark grey :)

I've got one (not from OCUK though this time). Overall very impressed.

1. Blacks are rubbish - As you would expect from an LCD, and even then they are crap, but about the same as the PVA 24 inch LCD OCUK do.

2. Viewing angles on the horizontal are VERY good for a TN panel, hardly any colour shifting at all, image also stays very bright for a TN. Vertical angles are AWFUL. But this isn't for mounting on the ceiling, so if your going to be using the screen for any verticle angles stuff at all. THIS ISN'T FOR YOU!!!!

3. Colours are very good, better than the 24 inch PVA panel OCUK sell.

I'd defo recommend it for the price, I'm not mentioning any retailers as per the rules, but I think OCUK could easily pull the price down a good few ten pound notes.

I had no dead pixels on mine, and the box had definately been opened before I received it for the record

I am considering one of these, can anyone show it connected up to a 360?

Either through VGA or HDMI? pref with the output set to 1080p.

I want to know if the image is better than a 226BW running at 720p.

The 226BW has noticable stretching.

You will have the same streching here as all PC LCDs are 16:10 and not 16:9 as the Xbox 360 outputs, this screen has NO options at all for leaving the signal alone, so it will always strech a 16:9 image to take up the whole screen.

For me this is a benefit, as I value the extra screen size over the negative of a slightly streched image. But its a personal choice so I guess thats a bit of a bummer for you L(

One good thing to note though is that MS has confirmed that in the fall dashboard update they will be including support for 16:10 displays so your problem will be no more in 4-6 weeks anyway!

I'm thinking of picking one of these up too.

Found a review at Extremetech which is less than positive.

Would be great to hear feedback from those who have already picked one up.

Does anyone know whether PS3s support 16:10? I don't want it to stretch the image, that will not look good.

To those saying the colours are better than the VA OcUK's did you calibrate them at all?

I certainly tried! I also tried a couple of settings from the big thread, I got it looking quite good but nothing special. Strangely enough, I got sent a TN version by accident (as a lot of people did) at first. The colours on that were much better than the VA panel, and better than this Hans-G one, but not by much. Viewing angles were atrocious though, even on the horizontal.

I checked which panel was in my screen and it seemed to be one of the good ones...I dunno I just think it was completely over rated, but thats just me :o

To anyone considering this cheapo Hanns-G model, I'd say go for it. There's nothing innately wrong with the screen, the speakers are crap as you'd expect. It does everything you could expect for the price, its more than "accetable" in all areas.

For the price its down right amazing.

Don't know what else to say about it really....Uhhh...The stand is very good and chunky (but not cheap), it can swivel left\right and up\down, build quality is MUCH better than the OCUK digimate 24 inch too, no ghosting etc....ummmm anyway, thats all I can think of off top of me head.

About the 360.

Ordered on sunday, arrived tuesday, great service.
In general, I think this looks great, particularly for the price. Its ****ing massive, I personally have no dead/damaged pixels, picture quality seems good as do colours/greys, although I am no aficianado. Viewing angles are good considering, and its ability to tilt and rotate eliminate any problems.
If I didn't have these 360 issues/queries I would be over the moon about this monitor. If its for PC use only, its a definite thumbs up, I am typing through my laptop on it at 1920x1200 and it looks great. But these 360 problems are perplexing me!

And now the price has dropped to £220 pretax!! Argh!

Say I wanted to return this and swap it for the G2400W, how easy would it be? Would you just credit the monetary price difference to the same account? Would I have to post it back myself by courier? I have all the original boxes.

I'm not sure if I want to send it back, just want to know if its even an option.

DAMN YOU OCUK!!!!!!! *shakes fist
I just missed last weeks deal on this monitor so had to pay full price £295. and now you guys go and reduce the price again! AND I wasnt allowed the free shipping :( Feel like I have been ripped off by £50 :(

Hmm I shipped the item the day before they introduced the offer. Any time I consider buying an item now I am gonna wait a week I swear lol. Missed 2 massive discounts, and £50 aint a small amount for a student!

Ditto! £30 cheaper now, and no free shipping for me either.
I thought all this HD stuff was simple until I started reading around. So much confusion. Eg 720p sometimes being better than 1080p for some screens at a certain native resolution?!

It doesn't look like many people know whats going on with the Autumn xbox 360 update to enable 16:10 resolutions (but not up to 1920x1200 damnit). Question:

Would the 360 look better over VGA at the (soon available) 1680x1050 16:10 resolution on this monitor than it would on 1080p HDMI or VGA connection on this screen?

It's not going to be able to scale up to 1200?

Since this monitor has no scaling options that would mean either a horribly stretched 1080p or a lower 16:10 resolution.

Maybe console owners would be better off sticking with a 24" which is more fully featured with 1:1.

I have the ViewSonic VX2835WM that uses this panel (3ms G2G (5ms ISO) 28"WS Hannstar TN Film (HSD280MUW1-A) and it’s a cracking unit! The colours etc are spot on, mine has 1:1 mapping which is a massive thing for me, the price of this 28' is unbelievable :D
