***Haswell -E Owners Thread***

np,its something silly I bet

always the same with new chipsets/bios's

It's alive !

After all of that I think it was some weird HDD conflict ! :D

Found that if I booted with no drives connected I could get into bios. Changed everything around and re sat it all. Am finally able to get back into Bios and boot into Windows. I'm guessing when I flashed with the drives connected as they were it didn't finish and corrupted.

Thank you for your help bud, I had given up earlier tbh. When you said about Q flash with no memory that gave me a glimmer of hope it could be saved lol, I was already looking at other mobo's :D

Thank you Wazza :)

Did you load optimised defaults before you flashed the bios? or leave an overclock on?

Yeah it was all at default, I flashed in Q-Flash via bios with all the HDD's all plugged in, I had noticed that I couldn't get into bios the day before, usually frantically pressing DEL would get me in so it's always been touchy..

When I finally managed to re flash bios he last time it was only with no drives in place, as soon as I plugged them back in it would freeze on boot up again.

Re sat everything changed the cables around and all seems fine now. Bios / Windows.

must have been some weird conflict, maybe something went onto IDE mode, I have no idea, but it's working :D

Nice one :)

I've bricked a good few boards in the past but usually only when leaving a very high overclock on.

Glad you got it sorted.

Cheers mate, me to :)

Glad your back up and running Boomstick - weird problem you had there.

Mark

Yeah, thanks to Wazza I kept googling stuff, found out about this weird Gigabyte HDD error, something to do with IDE conflict. That was what made me unplug all the drives, then it was fine lol.

PC's are great n all, but when they go wrong like that and you literally have to try everything I end up just wanting to throw the PC out of a window :D

I'm scared to turn it off, in case it doesn't come back on :p

Spoke to soon lol, can't get into bios again now. Same issue if I press DEL during boot up I get a black screen. If I press nothing it will boot into Windows and run fine.

So the PC will run but not allow me into the bios, hopefully an update will fix this issue?

**EDIT**

It's def a hard drive thing, turns out the second drive in my PC does not handshake properly with UEFI bios. So that's why it boots into bios when it's unplugged..

Problem is this particular barracuda is a green 1TB platter 3TB Total HDD, getting the right firmware is hard, think I've finally got the right one and it's downloading at a staggering 10kb/s :p

I think my woes will be over once I get this drive flashed up to date :-D

Only just seen your issues boom,

I strangely had that too:eek::(, it seemed to be an issue with mech drives, my SSD works fine and had no issues booting with it attached.

If fact this issue seems to have killed my HDD now.

From scouring the net about the boot issues, found that a lot of people are having boot issues on all X99 motherboards with certain HDD's.

I'm gonna order a pair of 2TB Hybrids to go with my SSD, and put my current ones in other PC's. Hopefully as they are a newer model it should be compatible  I've wanted them drives for a while anyway and they are pretty cheap now.

If that doesn't fix it I guess we just have to wait for Gigabyte to fix it via a bios.

I'm glad that it is this though and not a motherboard hardware fault, be a massive pita to take it all apart and RMA it, I like the board just need this boot issue fixed.

its either board bios incompatibility or hdd fw

it will halt if it detects an issue at startup as it scans all your components,memory/gpu/kb ect

any third party sata ports on that board or are they all intel? try third party if you have them

Yeah I've used all the combo's of Sata 6 ports and Sata 10. Same issue, I think it's def a HDD firmware not playing nice with the bios. It all works in Windows fine.

Just hope new drives will be ok :p

Put a ticket in with Gigabyte regarding not being able to enter bios with older hard drives connected, could there be a bios fix for this?

Interesting to see if they reply :p

Really liking the motherboard / CPU combo, price VS performance is excellent, if they fix this bios issue it will be sweet. I want to keep this setup.

gigabyte uk or Taiwan?

usually they reply within 3 days

Uk mate, just see what happens now.

I've got 2 x 2TB Hybrid HDD's on order, so hopefully they will work without issue as they are newer drives, think Gigabyte should be aware of this boot problem anyway.

I've wanted a pair of the hybrid's for a while, at least this was a good excuse to grab them :D

Thinking of my 5820K as a stopgap until Broadwell -E next year :) A cheap alternative to Z97 setup, only the DDR4 was more expensive, but even DDR3 prices are going up now. 5820K is a lil beast.

So far most with Haswell -E chips 4.5Ghz seems to be about average, when Broadwell -E launches I'll make the jump to an 8 core and I imagine those will be capable of better clocks etc.

Hopefully have a bios that works by then as well ;)

Do you think BDW-E will be delayed? Cause K chips are supposed to launch around about the same time the Es would. :/

It should release next year around the same time Haswell -E came this year. E chip seem to always come in Q4.

For me the 5820K + UD4 was a cheap way to get on the platform, next year I'll likely buy the top chip, as I think it will be worth it. Top chip could be 14nm '8core / 16thread' or '10core / 20thread' monster that should clock well and be less power use.

Haswell -E should be more interesting than Broadwell / Skylake as they just seem to be focusing on IGPU progress on the mainstream. Seems the best choice Haswell -E > Broadwell -E..

5930k incoming tomorrow, cant wait to have a play :D

Does anyone have a Gigabyte gaming 5 board and this chip? Hope I get lucky in the silicone lottery!

Good luck with you build, post some benchy's if you get time (:

5820k at my place tomorrow with red gskill and msi. Now where did i put em adapters for my xspc rasa block :D wont get installed till next week sometime. Dont have time to Destiny and stuff :P

Ordered cause was 10 pounds off cpu and there was 1 kit of em memories i wanted. Best thing is that from 3 weeks i did not even used my pc :P Just to convert movies from mp4 to avi as my Panasonic plasma does not do MP4 :/

Nice one, for the price can't go wrong with 5820K it's a beast.

Looks like newer HDD drives has fixed the bios issue on X99 UD4, I can enter Bios with the new 2x ST2000DX001 SSHD now. Little worried the problem may come back but fingers crossed lol.

Good luck - really hope it goes away for you.

After two failed boards I had had enough of the UD4, just hoping the MSI is more reliable:)

I've just had to RMA my Asus X99-S board. The lights were on, but nobody was home.

Cheers FrankJH, X99 is def having it's share of teething problems. Was your board working to start with or DOA spot35?

Look what DPD guy gave me few minutes ago :] Xmas Early this year :D This should last me 3 years for CPU power gaming :]

Nice one, good luck with your build. 5820k ftw :D

Seems to be a case of you get what you pay for, with X99 boards. I've seen many asus boards with no issues at all, compared to all sorts of issues with Gigabyte boards.

I've seen problems across all the boards, MSI / Gigabyte having boot issues with older HDD drives, experienced this personally haha. ASUS /MSI x99 actually going up in smoke, and other boards with memory compatibility issues.

Personally love Gigabyte boards price VS quality, only vendor that I have never had a DOA board with lol, also they work on new bios all the time. So at least with Gigabyte you know whatever issues there are will be addressed.
