Hurricane Helene / Milton

it's still not looking too bad on nullschool, compared to some that hit the Turks a ways back, they must be expecting a real hike in power once it makes landfall.

Its the storm surge that will cause the damage, its due to downgrade to a high end category 3 with winds at 125mph that will still cause damage ripping buildings and bringing down trees etc.

Main issue is the "barrier islands" are actually heavily populated beach communities, full of houses, hotels and restaurants etc - most of which are timber framed......all very low lying and with zero protection for anything that comes in off the sea......

You get warnings saying stay and you die but you already see people saying they are going to stay. Should people risk their lives to help rescue these morons or should they just be left to the elements?

The second option. It's Darwinism at that point.

I imagine some people's lives are so bad there that they don't really care whether they live or die, if it's my time, it's my time kind of thing.

There are also people who would really struggle to evacuate, severely disabled people who rely on medical equipment that can't be used in a vehicle stuck in traffic for 12 hours and so on, gas stations out of fuel, huge queues at hospitals to refill oxygen etc. Yes, you can apparently call the fire service to help you out, but they'll be inundated with requests and won't be able to get to everyone in time.

There are millions of people in the areas that are predicted to be most affected, it is impossible for them all to evacuate and/or find shelter. It sucks, and the outcome of staying will probably be worse than trying to evacuate, but people will be people.

A lot of people can't completely evacuate as there's no fuel anywhere, but I'm sure everyone can get inland. Even 10 miles inland will be far, far safer. It's the flooding that is the big killer, not so much the wind.

Absolutely bonkers that they get battered by one hurricane and then there's an even bigger one to follow it shortly after. What a scary place to live.
