*** iPhone 5 - Revealed! ***

Was it not clear I was talking about the damage above? Personally, if a phone comes damaged i'd be straight down the Apple shop demanding a replacement. It's no different than if it was any other product.

Pristine 32GB Black here, out of the box. If dings start appearing, I can't say I'll be terribly angsty. I plan to use this phone hard...and it has already accrued an inch of fingerprints.

The design is fantastic, somehow manages to make the 4/4S feel clunky. The screen is gorgeous, the added real estate is great in apps that have already begun utilising it. The aspect ratio is admittedly a bit weird at first (probably because I've been used to seeing the same flipping ratio in iPhones since the beginning), though keeping the width the same does indeed keep the grip comfortable. The weight is worth commenting on - deceptively light. But not so light that it feels cheap. The connector is tiny, much welcome change and frankly about time the proprietary standard was revamped.

Of course, I'm upgrading from a decidedly molested 3G that I've been using since its launch – everything is glorious as far as I'm concerned!

EDIT: for those that were wondering, I trimmed my big (not even micro) Orange pay as you go SIM down to nano size using the online template floating around and shaved the edges till it fit in the slot. Popped it in and was activated in a minute. Showing EE as the service provider, as was outlined in a press release earlier. May change to another tariff/provider depending on my data usage, but if the 500mb I get free on my current pay as you go plan suits me then that would be economical.

The problem doesn't seem to be isolated , so if I was anyone with a iphone 5 I would be worried.
HTC had same problem with the same sort of coating on the one s , it simply isn't very durable , but it looks great .
I know a lot of us like our phones to stay looking nw , but unless your fitting a case to this I would be very surprised if it doesn't chip !
get insurance and drop it hard if it looks bad ;)

Its really quite worrying.. Its a good job I cant afford this until payday. That'll be a week of seeing real world issues with this device.

I bought a 4s last year on release day and sent it back with the battery issue. I'd rather let someone else do their product testing for them. I got a second hand 4 instead for £300 and sold it for £192. Currently waiting for an offer to be accepted on a 4s with 10 months warranty remaining for £315. For me it just makes so much more sense to just stay a year behind and upgrade when the market is flooded with people to rush out for the next one. Even if I really wanted the 5 I have the patience to wait a month to see what issues arose.

Each to their own but we would laugh at people losing 40% on a product year on year in another section of the forum ;)

Awaiting them announcing "iTRAY", for a measly £50 extra they'll glue a piece of foam onto the tray to ensure no scrapes on arrival. :p

You need to get that a patent fast!

After getting back from work I've unboxed mine, two dinks in the bezel at the front of the phone beneath the volume buttons, very annoying and noticeable. Will be calling apple first thing in the morning for a replacement. Terrible quality control, didn't expect this from apple

from macrumors.com

My iPhone 5 black is near perfect. A few nicks here and there but this is expected. People it's aluminum. It's not steel. Aluminum is soft so expect things like this.

Can't believe someone would accept a premium product with obvious manufacturing faults.

Thinking of swapping my black for a white. I pre-ordered with Tmobile but it hasn't arrived yet. It'll probably arrive tomorrow, how would I go about swapping it?

My black one is flawless, dunno about the wifes yet. A bit bad if Apple haven't really tested the coating enough that it comes off quickly. Will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

Apple aren't exactly flawless, iPhone 4 was even worse with the antenna issue!

I'd guess a preorder for something you've never actually seen (at point of order at least) is the same as a distance sale, just reject it and you'll be fine.

Talking about anodised aluminium and being shocked at scratches makes me feel like most of use haven't built pcs in anodised cases? lol, I bet we have! Lian Lis look awesome but scratch like mofos. The difference is you don't put your pc in your pocket.

Not justifying it, I'd be annoyed if mine was dinked, the one S I decided to try out has a few in it after a week which is mega annoying to me, I'm a bit of a perfectionist with my phones and this is concerning me a bit.

Its not "OMG must be recalled" etc though. It is what it is.. I suppose I could learn to love a scratched up 5. Thankfully the one I'm getting isn't being bought with my money so I'll be less bothered.

Mine arrived this morning, feels very nice in the hand and screen impressive.

Only problem being I haven't got round to getting a nano sim, so stuck at activating screen until tomorrow. :(

Got bored tonight so took the scissors to my giffgaff sim , works brilliantly and no longer need to leave giffgaff whilst I wait for them to get nano sims :)

If the coating is flaking away out of the box, then these might all be in a bit if a state in 6 months

you get what this is right? It's anodised aluminium, nothing is flaking off anything, there's no paint to flake off, they're getting knocks somehow along the sharpest edges which is exposing the unanodised aluminium by the looks of things.

Its pretty shoddy that thats happening out of the box but to be honest they should age quite gracefully.

Maybe.

I thought Nano sims were thinner as well? Well played if it fits by just trimming off the sides.

I thought that, but no sanding required at all, and doesn't feel lose in the tray either. Almost as if designed with tolerance in mind, but guess that is more coincidence than anything else.
