Pre-Orders for Next-Generation iPhone to Begin September 12?
Monday August 13, 2012 11:15 am PDT by Eric Slivka
iMore, which was the first source to claim that Apple will be holding its media event to introduce the next-generation iPhone on September 12, now reports that pre-orders for the device will begin on that same date ahead of the already-rumored first wave of launches on September 21.

Apple's first launch wave typically includes the United States and perhaps a half dozen other countries, and iMore notes that the second wave of launches that will bring the device to additional countries is scheduled for the first week of October.
We've since learned that iPhone 5 pre-orders are currently planned to begin that same day, at least in the U.S. Release is still planned for 9 days later, on September 21, 2012. We've also learned that the second wave of iPhone launches, the ones in international markets, will begin in the first week of October, likely October 5.
The report notes that this sequence of events will be similar but not identical to last year's, which saw the iPhone 4S introduced on October 4 and pre-orders begin three days later on October 7. The iPhone launched in the United States and six other countries on October 14, with the second wave bringing the device to over 20 additional countries two weeks later.

With all this talk of Cases, surely Apple have to let the case manufactuers know well before so they can get them designed and made?

Last time there were some (fake) mockups and spec sheets - but no physical components, so a few people made cases based the assumption it was real. This time round, as with prior iPhones pretty much all the components have leaked well in advance so it's not too hard for companies to get hold of the exact measurements.

Apple don't tell people anything - they did this with the iPhone's bumper and the iPad's smart cover as a forced first-choice for people.

I am due for an upgrade in Oct 2012 or later, would it be worth holding out for this? need to check through this thread for rough release dates/expected prices.

I'm confused about the screen res arguement. Surely if they increase the screen size they would need to increase the resolution as well or it wouldn't be "Retina" any more?

Without trawling through this thread, can anyone point out a realistic release date and approx cost on contract/handset cost.

Going to have a stroll through this thread later but was wondering if anyone had any info off the top of their head.

What do you mean of course? I get 40% of friends and family orange discount and I was just given a provisional price from orange assuming its 45 a month like then4 and 3GS was. Check me other posts, I got the s3 for like 21 a month.

It's worth pointing that out, then, otherwise people will just assume you're making nonsense up.

Pfft, I've been offered the iPhone 10 for £25pm yo.

They're not increasing size just aspect ratio. The new screen only adds 176 pixels to the top of the current one, making it a 'wide screen' iPhone.

It's a minor change at best, ignore the usual comments from fanboys afraid of change :p

Yeah that's funny.

out of interest how have you already had an offer on this?

i think i am a good enough customer of Orange to get a pre order...

It's not a pre-order, I said it was a provisional price. E.g I rang to check up on an upgrade for my mom, and mentioned the iphone5 and what price we would be looking at and I was basically told if the entry price comes out at £45 like previous times, with my discount, I'll be getting it for £27.

Anyone else got any concerns about the availability of nano sims if that's what Apple employ in the new iPhone?

I'm on GiffGaff so would be buying a phone direct from Apple, and the likelihood with them is that they won't have nano sims available for some time after launch (if they infact need them).

Someone suggested Apple could include a "blank" sim card with the phone and then somehow an operator could map your number to it, but that seems unlikely.
