January Transfer Window 2010/2011 Season Rumours/Signings

All the Liverpool supporters at my work are talking of Carroll like he is twice the player Torres is, had to laugh at them.

He's not twice the player, I do rate Carroll though and am happy we signed him (not happy about the price but wasnt much we could do about that, that was more down to the situation and timing)

This morning, looking at it afresh, overall I am fairly happy with the deadline day for us. Happy to have Suarez and Carroll, if things were reversed I dont think I would have been happy if it had been us spending £50m on Torres as I would rather that amount of money be spent on multiple players rather than one. Really would have liked a high quality winger, its my biggest regret of the transfer window, but thats ok, we'll get that in summer instead.

The problem isn't that he's left. A lot of Liverpool fans understand the reasons why he wanted out - although his decision to join Chelsea was a surprise. It's the lack of class around the way he's left the club that's the issue.

It was bad enough that he's joining Chelsea but had he waited until the summer and given the club more time to prepare for his exit, a lot of Liverpool fans would find it difficult to criticise him too much. Had he even made it clear at the start of this transfer window he might have been forgiven. But he chose (and I suspect planned with Chelsea) to leave it as late in the day as possible, in order to force the issue and leave Liverpool with a decision of selling to Chelsea or having an unhappy player on our hands for 6 months. I'm just glad the club stood firm and held out for a decent fee for him.

Well, it's all very well saying he showed a lack of class and should have shown loyalty to the club but the club hasn't treated him with any class whatsoever! The only reason he signed a new contract before and stayed was because he'd been promised investment which never came. He obviously felt that the club had been repeatedly lying to him. Why should he waste another half season with nothing to win after hanging around for the first half? Negotiations with chelsea had been going on for 2 weeks apparently and he only lodged a transfer request late on because it became clear liverpool were not going to let it happen, and when they had agreed for another striker to arrive. It's obviously not ideal, but I really think he was at the end of his tether.

As for the comments he's made in interviews, it can't be denied that atm chelsea are a step up from liverpool - he's gone from a club which hasn't won anything in an while, and with nothing to win this year and who might be in the cl in over a season's time, to a club which won the double last year and have shouts at the league and cl this year.

The shirt burned was given to them by Journos and sone of them were bitters lol.

What all of them?

I've seen 4 different videos of Scousers burning his shirt.

I thought it was only backwards infidels in Iraq that did that kind of thing?

That makes sense though doesnt it? I mean a team at the top of the table you wouldnt expect to do much business because they are already at the top of the table and so their squad is fine, whereas a team which is off the pace you would expect to do more business in order to attempt to catch up ?

It's more the prices being banded around for players.

The stuff he was saying on Chelsea tv was sickening.

"Moved to a big club, that I deserve". Only him and Diouf gave interviews after signing. What sickens me the most is all the young scousers who idolised him. (5-10yolds with posters all over their room, footie tops with his name on etc.)

Fernando, you have absolutely no class. Your Grandfather, and Athletico Fans will be disappointed.

Ooooh, bringing his grandfather into it! A whole new level of butthurt :D

Allegedly Carroll didn't want to leave Newcastle and was texting a local fanzine about this saying he was kicked out the door when the figure was revealed.

If it's true, then I'm not surprised at all and I have a good idea where that money will end up :(

Yeah some of the prices were crazy, but very situational, the same players most likely wouldnt have gone for the same prices had there been more time. Its a curious thought actually, I wonder if prices would be lower if you could sign players all through the season instead of in a window?

Somehow all the liverpool fans managed to ignore this bit of his interview as well:

Q: It appears your first game will be at Stamford Bridge on Sunday against Liverpool. It is like the destiny.

A: It is not perfect for me but we will see what happens and I only have good words about Liverpool. They made me a top player and gave me the chance to play at the top level. I will never say anything bad about Liverpool, I have been very happy there, but now the history is different and I am playing for Chelsea. If I have the chance to play I will do my best for Chelsea and hopefully I can score.

After the arsenal game on th weekend I won't be giving that fat cockney ****** any more of my money. Well done cashley, yes the price was good for a kid who hasn't yet totally proved himself, but what was stopping you keeping him until the summer when he's been fit for a while and scored a few more goals, probabley keeping us afloat, then selling him?

Here's trying to gamble and hope we'll stay up with the strikers we currently have, of which have scored less goals this season than kevin Nolan put together iirc. And as fat mike knows gambling doesn't always pay off does it? I'd be surprised if that £35m is spent on decent players in the summer.

What if he didn't score any more goals, entirely possible given that he's unproven as yet, and his stock went through the floor?

£35m is about 3 times what he's worth in a normal market and normal situation at the moment. To turn that bid down would be an appalling decision.

That's why it's so funny. Lose a truly world class forward, gain an unproven barcode and only have £15m to show for it :D

Only thing that worries me with Carroll is how he's supposedly been forced out the door by Ashley so is he going to give 100% commitment to Liverpool in every game, does he really want to be there right now? Not something you'd really want to be worrying about on a £35m player.

Well isn't it something more like:

Torres & Babel Out - £57m

Suarez & Carroll In - £52m

Whacking great 5 mil profit there Kenny lad :D

Figures may not be bang on but it's something like that.

August 3rd 2010: “This is the best club in the country so the targets and expectations are always high. I am really happy to be back, really happy to stay with all my team-mates. My commitment and loyalty to the club and to the fans is the same as it was on my first day when I signed. I felt at home from the first day, I feel the fans love me and everyone knows I am really happy here and really happy to play at Anfield.”

5 months later, Fernando Torres hands in a transfer request and is in talks to join Chelsea.

October 8th 2010: “All I have ever wanted to do is play for Newcastle. That’s been the case since I was a teenager, playing for the juniors and deserves, and it’s still the same now. Every time I pull on the black and white shirt – and even more so now that I have number nine on my back – it means the world to me so to be able to do that for at least the next five years is brilliant.”

3 months later, Andy Carroll hands in a transfer request and is in talks to join Liverpool.

Footballers eh, who'd 'av 'em!

From what it seems he was forced to hand in a transfer request as Ashley couldn't turn down £35m but didn't want to pay Carroll the bonuses/extras that he would have had to if he hadn't handed in a transfer request. Might be a load of rubbish but seems fairly likely reading around.
