January Transfer Window 2010/2011 Season Rumours/Signings

In the cold light of day I am genuinely unsure as to whether we (Liverpool) had a good day or bad one.

Yes we lost one of (on his day) the best strikers ever to grace a pitch, but he was unhappy, unsettled and wanted to leave. This has been pretty obvious for quite some time now.

On the other hand we gained a good, if not great proven forward in Suarez, and a kid with a lot of potential. Yes he has done some really stupid things, but bottom line he's a kid, and lets be honest, there's a fair few top class players who haven't exactly behaved themselves in the past either. Cantona, Zidane, even Gerrard come to mind for a start.

Maybe with the right mentors / manager he can be brought on, and you never know, he could end up being a fantastic striker for us.

Don't get me wrong, I think at £35m he was vastly overpriced, but I am trying to take the positives from this and I think Carroll just might prove to be a really smart buy in the long run. He's strong, pretty fast and likes to throw himself about on the pitch. I can see him being popular with the fans.

EDIT - bring back Riera - all is forgiven :)

After the arsenal game on th weekend I won't be giving that fat cockney ****** any more of my money. Well done cashley, yes the price was good for a kid who hasn't yet totally proved himself, but what was stopping you keeping him until the summer when he's been fit for a while and scored a few more goals, probabley keeping us afloat, then selling him?

Here's trying to gamble and hope we'll stay up with the strikers we currently have, of which have scored less goals this season than kevin Nolan put together iirc. And as fat mike knows gambling doesn't always pay off does it? I'd be surprised if that £35m is spent on decent players in the summer.

You do have to worry a bit now for the rest of the season for Newcastle, in effect they have lost their top goalscorer, the top English goalscorer in the league this season and the 3rd top outright goalscorer in the league this season, and replaced him with no-one.

Allegedly Carroll didn't want to leave Newcastle and was texting a local fanzine about this saying he was kicked out the door when the figure was revealed.

If it's true, then I'm not surprised at all and I have a good idea where that money will end up :(

I'm still far from convinced that he didnt want to go and was kicked out the door. Its not often at all that a player is forced into moving to a club they dont want to go to.

Well isn't it something more like:

Torres & Babel Out - £57m

Suarez & Carroll In - £52m

Whacking great 5 mil profit there Kenny lad :D

Figures may not be bang on but it's something like that.

AFAIK its 22.xmil for Suarez, rising to a potential 26-28mil depending on source, assuming he does well I can see it being about 25-26mil and some money maybe for Liverpool getting back in the champs league or winning the league which they won't do. 35 for Carroll,

So 2 in 2 out for basically 57mil in 57mil out. However they got rid of one worthwhile player, who has been only just above average for over a year, and one utterly worthless pile of gash, and brought in one player on top top form and another player in pretty damn good form, 3rd highest scorer in the league whose got huge potential and a very long career ahead of him. Good piece of business all told.

As for loyalty and love, these are things players say because it gets fans to love them, its a tool, fans are gullible and weak minded, a player says they loves them and they go mental, he leaves and they want to kill him.

Liverpool was a job to Torres, a ludicrously highly paid job, he liked it there, played some good football, liked the fans, liked his life, moved to a another job, still likes the liverpool fans, still liked his life. Fans insist everything changed, nothing has, life as usual.

Makes the Darren Bent deal look cheap. Wonder if Bent is thinking... "Damn... maybe I could have been at Liverpool"

They've lost a striker, but the bid came in on the final day, they should have gotten a loan striker in, or bought Trezuguet for smeg all and had a quality player, but they had very little time and they'd never have gotten 35mil in the summer. They should be safe, frankly there are 4-5 significantly worse teams who also have less points at the moment so the chances of relegation are crazy low. Ameobi, rubbish as he is, has 4 goals, 4 assists, Best can obviously score a bit and may come good.

As you said, its pretty much impossible to know who wanted who to go in his situation. Carroll's home town is Newcastle, he doesn't want them to hate him, and the club don't want to be seen as the bad guys, they've both got reasons to want it to seem like the other ones asked for it.

Of course, Carroll could have turned Liverpool down, and didn't, and Newcastle turned down a 30mil bid(or 25 according afaik, only to Baz), did Ashley REALLY think he could get 5(or 10)mil more than had been offered, I mean really? Wouldn't money grabbing Ashley have jumped at 25/30mil straight away and not turned it down, didn't they only accept a bid after the transfer fee , didn't Carroll agree to go to Liverpool and sign a contract despite having a 5 year contract with Newcastle, IE if he refused he had 5 years to play at Newcastle if he wanted to stay there.

So you are saying Liverpool have another player who doesn't want to be there? :D

Fernando, you have absolutely no class. Your Grandfather, and Athletico Fans will be disappointed.

What's his grandfather and the Athletico fans got to do with anything?

Unless you are one of those people that believes all the **** spouted by players on teams they supported as a kid.

Clearly at some point whilst he was at Liverpool, Torres must have asked Gerrard if he had any regrets.

"Yeah, I should have ****ed off to Chelsea when they came knocking."

I'd say it's a knocking bet, he doesn't want to be there but I don't think that'll manifest itself as someone who doesn't want to play football and will not be interested in the game. I hope he does well at Liverpool, I cantblame him for going if what he's said is true, if your employer turns round to you and says they don't want you anymore, I'd be inclined to say there was threats of not getting a wage increase at Newcastle aswell, and if you're told someone is willing to pay you more than double your wages again, I can't blame him again.

I wish him all the best and I'm grateful for his years of service at Newcastle on all the levels he played at for us.

On sky news it says Torres has said it's every footballer's dream to join a world class club.Er.....wouldn't that be liverpool then?(admittedly not at the moment!)

Good business by Liverpool. Although Carroll is quite a few weeks away before playing.

Liverpool is not a world-class club anymore. They have a rubbish team and wouldn't class any of the players world class apart from Reina. 2 Years ago, yes. They had top class players in top form. Gerrard, Torres, Alonso, Reina, Mascherano, Carrigher and some other player they sold, israeli i think.

Benayoun?

Carragher was never world class.

It's just strange that that world class team didn't win squat.

You'd never admit any liverpool player is world class until they've been sold.

Ok it wasn't a dream, we've paid £35m for Andy Carroll.

£17m player + £8m January premium + £10m you're ****ing desperate and loaded premium = £35m.

Thankfully, I did say that I think he's the best striker of his type in the league before our interest in him came out and despite it being fashionable to knock the lad (because of his off-field antics), he's clearly got a lot of potential.

My only concern is the lack of a natural wide player in our squad to supply him with the crosses he'll thrive on. Had we managed to agree a deal for Young (or another winger) yesterday too, I'd be much happier but hopefully that will be addressed in the summer.

Brave decision to pay so much for him but as others mentioned before; this time last year we were selling players and nobody was coming in. Compare that to now and even after the Carroll and Suarez deals, we were still trying to bring in the likes of Young and Adam.
