Junior doctor strike: Union's pay demands unrealistic, says Steve Barclay

I can tell you, they would have raised benefits by inflation, but not paid the RCN nurses what they want. Just like the Tories.
i would be very confident that labour wouldn’t have shafted the health care profession for the last 12 years. This dispute isn’t just looking at the last year in isolation, it goes back through austerity and the tories refusal to make any correction when times improved which has dug the rather large hole that they’re in now.

How anyone can look at the current situation and respond ‘but labour’ is completely beyond me.

I’m saying you‘re just guessing. It doesn’t matter what Labour or the LDs would have done because they didn’t! If you don’t focus on what actually happened we won’t move the debate on.
im not guessing though, Labour have already admitted they wouldn’t match the demands. No party would, it’s not feasible at this moment in time.

If you’re extrapolating that then why can’t I extrapolate that it would be a different world had it not been for austerity? I just don’t think it’s helpful.

The Tories are well and truly to blame for all this mess and saying otherwise is untrue. You might as well complain that Superman hasn’t been much help.

Perhaps they need to be reminded of the fact all they did to say thanks to the NHS for going above-and-beyond during Covid was to clap for them.

Also with regard to your "mate"... ask him how much Student Debt he owes... You'll find out why he's working extra weekends.

His uni was paid for by the MOD as far as I’m aware, very clever guy though and worked super hard aswell as being dedicated. I know the first few years are bad but being a doctor is a great career and you have plenty of opportunities to earn a LOT further on in your career, with minimal risk of redundancy. Ofcourse it doesn’t compare to the earning potential in America.

I think NHS staff working during covid whilst appreciated was part of their job no? Plenty of people lost their jobs or had their livelihoods ruined.

I honestly don’t think doctors can be that hard up, my mate 32, said he is working extra weekends at around 1k a day
he's not wrong, as a locum registrar it's usually £60-85/hr ***AT MARKET RATES***
all these tories going about talking about the free market...that's how much healthcare really costs

if doctors really wanted to...everyone, literally everyone can quit their day jobs and locum
you'd find that the rates will be going in excess of £100-200/h very quickly

i've done the maths for myself and if i were so inclined, could go "full time" locum and have so much free time i wouldn't know what to do with myself lol
as i've said in another thread, i would only need to work 25/h week x 40 weeks to earn more than i am doing now as a full-time (48h) staff

I wouldn’t mind if the money was re-circulated back into the NHS, but as someone mentioned it’ll be private companies that run and profit from it.
And of course if your car gets stolen or broken into... they provide literally nothing as it's apparently your fault for that happening, what is even the point?

I think these hospitals should band together and park en masse without paying, the hospital bosses will fold.

You can tell us that if you want, not that means anything. While you have your inflation matching pay rise working people are expected to settle for half that. Nope, time to stop screwing people over wages have been supressed for too long now. If you believe these people are too vital to strike how about we treat them as such and pay them fairly.

Why can’t people stop bringing the fact I get disability benefits into it all the ******* time. It’s nothing to do with it. Its not as if I want to be on them ffs, I’d much rather be fit, healthy and working than housebound and terminally ill

It doesn't matter that you're ill, don't sit there moaning about the people who treat you just asking for a wage they can live on. I remember your anger when it was suggested benefits may not rise with inflation, imagine the anger these people feel after suffering that for a decade plus.

look them in the eyes and tell the NHS staff looking after you that they don't deserve a fair pay rise

I’d be more than delighted for nurses to get an inflation matching pay rise.

You were celebrating the fact that you got it, and I don’t begrudge that, but how can’t you show any empathy towards the situation of people filling these vital roles?

But labour.
