Initially i thought the Sapphire was better but actually the MSI might be the better overall option.

Purely because of the longer warranty? Because at first glance the cooling system seems slightly less efficient - and I would imagine, ever so slightly louder.

Sapphire has the better cooler without doubt, but the MSI cooler is still very good. MSI has an extra year warranty and is slightly cheaper. MSI has a backplate and i believe (Gibbo said it did earlier) a custom pcb. Sapphire stays cool with large overclocks and lots of voltage according to the reviews i looked at.

It's also a lot shorter than the Sapphire.

Those of you with the 290, what idle temps are you getting and what fan speed are you using?

Thanks

Nothing so custom about MSI Gaming Edition (obviously excluding HSF) - carbon copy pcb layout, same pwm controller, same 5+1+1 phase design. The only proper custom design so far is Asus DCU2 and upcoming Lightning (but that one is end of Feb/March timeframe).

The guy on the right looks like a b grade dutch porn star. The sort that would come to fix your fridge and end up servicing your mrs at the same time.

Don't you always have your fridge technician take a look at your Mrs' cooling unit?

I thought it was just due course..

Msi website says for gaming edition has military grade components only, Solid state chokes etc etc

So can't be fully reference unless you are saying reference layout with replaced component choice?

Are you using the 13.30 beta drivers? If so use the 13.12 WHQL drivers. 13.30 are Kaveri drivers not for discrete gpu's.

Yes mate using the 13.12 from AMD website. I was expecting temps like this because my case is rubbish (enermax ostrog) was just wondering if adding another side fan to extract air would help. My previous 7950 Twin Frozr had the same problem, dumping a lot of hot air into the case. Was thinking of buying a Corsair 540..

Is afterburner telling you the core is dropping to that speed or are you using something else like HWINFO? I assume you're using +50% power tune?
