New essential Android apps thread

So I've had a little dabble this afternoon -

Really it was just to check I could parse JSON data supplied by a weather API. I couldn't... initially... but learnt how :)

My location is hard coded at the moment, so I need to make it use the phones location, then I'm thinking to simplify it to the next three 8 hour chunks (well, will have to be 9 hour chunks as the chunks are coming in 3 hour blocks) and then of course have it so you can set a notification in the evening for the morning weather.

My only concern at this point, is the accuracy of the weather. My weather app says it's fine now and quite nice in the morning. Changing weather API will likely mean re-writing a lot.

Anyway, we'll see how it goes :)

**EDIT** Okay, I can see it gives rainfall in mm and if it's anything above zero it says light rain, so all those 'light rain' are like 0.1mm... looks like I might need to process my own description.

looking great. can see a great use for this. keep up the good work looks like your training is really taking effect young padiwan.

It's a little closer to what it should look like. Uses the users location now too (or should, will default to St Paul's Cathedral if there's an issue :) )

Looks a bit nicer now too I think. It's not really intended to be used as an app so much, next I need to program in the notifications on user set parameters. That's the harder bit I think as services running in the background are a bit harder now with Oreo.

Anyway, you can at least now check overnight and the morning :) Here's an apk.

I need a decent name. Any suggestions?

Any recommendations for an app that allows a double tap on a locked screen to unlock/bring up whatever security you have to fully unlock? Just tried a couple and neither work.

My new case requires a much firmer push of the power/lock button so reckon a double tap would be better.

You'll need root for that. Even then it usually requires a custom kernel for your phone.

No FP sensor to auto unlock?

anyone know of an app that will keep an eye on weather for me at a certain time in the evening and alert if x = y? such as alert only if the weather is expected to drop below freezing in the night, or it's expected to rain tomorrow etc?

Dark Sky app almost does this. The x=y part it can do, e.g. you can set alert criteria such as "temperature falls below 0" or "wind speed goes above 20kph" but you can't specify an exact time. You're limited to "at any time", "daytime", "night time".

I don't use the weather alerts myself, I use the app for its next hour rain forecast widget which is excellent.

What music apps are people using? Noticed Poweramp doesn't support Oreo's new notification colours so wondering what else was there. Tried Google Music but I see the UI is still a mess...

Transparent widget is a bonus.

I use the paid for version of 'Rocket Player : Music Player'. The widget isn't transparent though. If you have a Samsung phone then Samsung Music is actually pretty good.

yeah exactly that. as kirk would say "make it happen". we can split the profits.

It's out in an official capacity, but I'm a little confused as tow whether I can post a link to it?

I see one of my posts was edited to say I can't promote my own YouTube channel? Does that mean I can't post my own apps too? Why would that be? I'm supposed to raise a thread in FCD? Can anyone tell me what that is? Thanks :)

Forum content discussion. Few forums down, to ask about the forum / moderation

Not promoting your own businesses or communities is in the forum rules, that'll be why your stuff is getting removed I expect.

So I've been playing around with other music players, and noticed only Google Play Music and Sony Music supports Oreo's coloured notifications (for offline music players that is). As for the apps themselves, I tried Gonemad again but didn't really like the UI or notification layout. Tried a few others such as Rocket, Shuttle, Pulsar, etc but there were some elements that felt missing from them. I guess Poweramp's features really has spoiled me. Decided to give the stock Sony app a try as that actually seems decent. Apparently Poweramp v3 is moving to beta "soon", with the included near final UI.

I would imagine given the discussion and request for the app that it wouldn't be wrong to link to Google play if it's free. It is after all requested and created due to posts in this thread.

I imagine it would breaking the rules to post videos randomly or links to apps you've made without any reason other than promoting. I know I post links to my site if I'm say asking people to test a form for me and never get told off as it's a legit reason and not in anyway self promotion

As they have ads though, my video's are no longer allowed. :( Shame as quite a few people have said they appreciate them, but I understand the reasoning, so there we are.

The app is 59p so can't link to it in the Play Store, but for anyone in this thread that wants it, the latest apk is here for the moment.

My friend was telling me about Dark Sky and it sounds great. But don't you have to subscribe now or something? How well does it work without GPS? (I wouldn't want it rinsing my battery)

Anyone tried Files Go yet? This is googles answer to Airdrop. Was leaked and now in beta. Tried to transfer 4k video files from my Note 8 to my Pixel XL and it was a breeze. This should come built in for all Android devices. Hope they would release an iOS app as well.

Going to give it a go. Noticed after the Oreo update Solid File Explorer no longer can do anything with the files on the SD card, and the developer seems to have put the app on hiatus a few months ago so I'll give Google's app a go.
