*** Nintendo Switch ***

Why any one decades on since Nintendo existed expect Nintendo to chase power is dumb / baffling

True, the last time they genuinely had an equally (if not more) powerful console then the rest was probably the N64; since then they've never really competed in that space although the GameCube wasn't as far off as it was made out to be

I mean 1080p 120fps is hardly cutting edge. The Xbox has been able to do for 4 years or more by now.

An Xbox isn't a portable device though, so it's a fairly irrelevant comparison.

Sure, something like the ROG Ally X can do 1080p 120fps but it costs £800, Nintendo might as well shut up shop if they tried launching Switch 2 at £800.

It's just not the market they're going for, they learnt a long time ago that they compete better when they don't try chasing numbers, because others are better at putting up big numbers. People who want that sort of device are better off going and buying something like the ROG Ally X in the first place, a Switch 2 isn't aimed at them.

Fair point. Whatever happens I'll still be interested. I'm just curious.

In a way I find it similarly frustrating because I rarely use mine handheld, so personally i'd happily sacrifice the portability, built in screen etc. for more power but it's not the direction they've taken since the Gamecube, so if I want to play the games I know i'll enjoy from Nintendo, i've learned to accept the performance will just be 'good enough' and nothing Xbox/PS rivalling.

I believe Nintendo are quite happy to be the 'second console' to enthusiast gamers who already have an XBox or a Playstation, rather than try to be what they already are - that way their potential market is absolutely huge compared to trying to be an enthusiasts first choice as they were with the Gamecube. Then you've got all the casual/family gamers who aren't interested in Xbox/PS at all too.

I'm the same. I only ever use the Switch in docked mode. Oh, well. Won't be long now until we have some official information.

Its Nintendo, they could 100% not be releasing any info until March. Perhaps they have had a particularly good Christmas season of selling MK8 for the 10th year in a row and have decided we don't need the Switch 2 until next year. Who knows.

I still wonder why people are always surprised at Nintendo systems power, or rather lack of, when they haven't ever aimed for the cutting edge of tech. They choose to make fun accessible consoles that play games. They don't aim for high resolution high fps.

Instead making systems that people enjoy playing. Both children and adults alike. As they know how to make good enjoyable games, it's the gameplay and not the graphics that make good fun games.
That is true looking at the Wii and onwards. But mobile chips have been getting really powerful as of late so they should be trying to get something really powerful for a change. It will also attract other games who don't want to play 'kiddy games'.

Why should they choose power when it's likely a small percentage of people that want that. They have always been successful at pushing hardware to do what they want and I'd argue the whole 'kiddie' games argument is a very week one as proven by Nintendo systems certainly having games to appeal to all ages and Mario, Zelda etc are hardly kiddie games.

Not beating the Series S in docked 5 years after its release seems a bit anaemic at face value but I suspect it's at a tenth or less of the power draw.
Chasing ever more detailed graphics has really ruined the AAA game space imo. Games are so expensive to make, proper AAA that do anything exciting are few and far between.
I think Nintendo is getting it right. Good enough graphics, but a focus on great games. I'm glad they offer something different.
