*** Nintendo Switch ***

This deal has over 300 heat on HotUKDeals now so if you do want to buy i would consider doing it sharpish. I did end up preordering one myself as you don't need to put down any money. This now means i need to cancel the Zelda preorder from Amazon, I should have bough Mario Kart instead. Nevermind...

What did annoy me is i have a of Game credit due to trading in a few things i was never going to use yet you can't use your Game wallet for preorders. I was going to gradually whittle the wallet down on PSN credit but it would have been nice to burn it all at once.

I have my preorder in at Amazon - Switch + Zelda. I don't know if I will keep it though. Will have to decide whether to cancel or not just before dispatch. I was undecided before I ordered, but thought I may as well get one in and make a more informed choice later :p.

No worries :)

Although the video of the FE game for the switch looked like a switch game. Can you explain please? :)

Read the post buddy, I meant is releases on new 3DS *too*. I.e. in addition to the Switch version.

AKA they're probably going to delay/waste resources on making an extra gimped version of the game for new 3DS, which thusly has a negative impact on the Switch version. If they 100% focused on the one single Switch version, then the game would be out and into the hands of consumers quicker.

Not only that, but a cross-platform release suggests that Nintendo themselves aren't confident in the Switch alone for this one game. This is very much unlike the Zelda situation, which is the other way around. Nintendo doesn't expect to sell many copies on the WiiU, so they made the effort to port it to Switch too, so the game might actually do better in sales.

TLDR Nintendo aren't focusing on the Switch, they're treating it like an afterthought.

And that interview was hilarious.

Nintendo answer and (mostly) avoid some Switch questions

Nintendo: We have nothing to announce at this time.

If Nintendo themselves were confident and going guns blazing, they'd be oozing with juicy info on all the cool stuff the Switch can do and trying to show off the console as much as possible. Instead they're all hush hush and that does them no favours. We've seen from the likes of Bethesda that not allowing consumers to know about the product early is detrimental, as day 1 purchases find that the end product is not as they'd hoped.

Where is the best place to buy a pro controller? Although not in a rush, won't need them until Mario release so guess can see if they reduce in price. Shame the Wii U pro controllers don't work, have 4 of them!

If I was going to get a Switch I don't think I'd preorder it. There's just not enough launch titles to wet my appetite. Mario and Zelda are core classics, but its still only 2 decent games.

Maybe once more titles launch and the price comes down will I consider it.

That's only the Warriors (Musou) game that's both Switch & 3DS though, developed by Koei Tecmo. Makes sense to put it on 3DS because it'll just be using the same engine as Hyrule Warriors, which is on Wii U & 3DS. Being on 3DS won't have a big impact on development time, that one's scheduled for 2017. There are over 60M 3DS out there, they'd be stupid not to release FE Warriors on 3DS too.

The brand new Fire Emblem mainline game scheduled for 2018 is a Switch only title.

I don't supposed you've played Hyrule Warriors 3DS? That game was a write-off on non-new 3DS models and it was heavily downgraded to be able to just about run on the new 3DS. Also considering that button-mashy games are very uncomfortable to play on 3DS and it's a poor match-up, irrespective of how successful the 3DS is. I dropped Smash Bros 3DS like a rock and stopped playing Monster Hunter last year due to uncomfortable play and hand-cramps. Not even having a larger 3DS and circle pad pro helped.

Speaking of the 3DS, I sure hope the Switch follows suit. In that it get's a price-drop, maybe an iteration that improves a few small things (there were rumours of a super dock that improve graphical performance even after Jan 12), some big games (*cough* Pokemon *cough*) with consoles bundles and then it snowballs in success as a portable platform. That's Nintendo's strength, their juggernaut in portable gaming. They just need to realise it with the Switch and that's it... the Switch would be as successful as the 3DS, if not better.

Pre ordered Zelda WiiU yesterday with the Amazon offer. It stated it will arrive on release day. I remember someone saying they didn't get that message for the switch version. Better check it!

I don't think how the game looks/plays on 3DS changes much with regards to development time though. I have it on Wii U, but I thought performance was meant to be fine on the New 3DS?. It obviously had to be downgraded.
Hyrule Warriors must have done well enough sales wise if they're putting an FE Warriors on the system.

I feel expecting a brand new Switch exclusive FE game in 2017 is asking a bit much, game development is hard and takes a lot of time. Switch dev kits have barely been around a year from what I've heard. I still don't expect Xenoblade Chronicles 2 will release this year, but we'll see.

Yeah I don't really like playing action games on the 3DS, for the same reasons you mentioned. That won't really be a problem with the switch fortunately.

Do you think Nintendo will have the balls to make Switch a success ?

If they genuinely commit to it as their sole platform, I can see it succeeding like this:

- Launch Switch as it is now
- Gradually tail off 3DS
- Add a switch without screen as a home console, reduced price
- Add a switch without dock as a portable console, reduced price

- Unified software library, year after year continuing
- Re-spins - better battery life, eventually hardware upgrades

What I mean is, are they brave enough to make it (with time) the sequel to the 3DS, keep it around for half a decade, iterate on the hardware again & again in different configurations & put all their software into a single platform ?

It's only my opinion but I think long-term the unified software library is Nintendo's best chance of success, they need to have every game they make on one platform that will be a byword for 'Nintendo Gaming'

Having so many SKUs is such a bad idea. No one wants a repeat of the various 3DS variants mess again.

Point taken. At launch it would be confusing.

But after 6 months to a year or so a portable-focused (ie cheaper, for kids) version, could be exactly the same thing without the dock. Would be exactly what they need.

And then why not the opposite ? A version with no screen , console built into the dock. Again, would help get the price way down & all of these sharing the same games.

I'm not sure which of the following is a worse title:

Wii U
New 3DS

Both just boggle my mind.

To be fair I can see why they went with those names. Building on existing brand names at the time and trying to get sales on the back of it. It just didn't work at all, I would certainly say the Wii U was never properly advertised as to exactly what it was all about. A lot of people didn't have a clue what it was when it launched!

yeah, local 2 player can be run through the two joycons if you want.

I assume for ARMS you'll need a completely different pad / joycon set for best results

You can play Arms the traditional way but for it to work with motion controls you will need another pair obviously.
