*** Nintendo Switch ***

I can't see Nintendo dropping the 3ds any time soon or not having at least one version out along side the switch.

What you have to bear in mind is it's not just a simple case of the Switch being a handheld, so there's no space for any other Nintendo handhelds, the price point is a big factor and the target audience.

The various DS models over the years with their covered screen and much lower price point are better suited for kids, who will use and abuse them (especially younger kids) - I don't see parents wanting to splash out so easily on a Switch in the same way with more risk of dropping a hefty handheld device, so you'd risk losing that market.

My young nephew (6) was brought a xbox one for Christmas and pretty much within the first hour he was trying to jam another game in when there was already one in there; apparently it's still working today (I'm amazed) but would you want to trust an expensive handheld to many kids?

Saying that though, seems a lot of parents shell out on expensive phones for their kids anyway so who knows! :)

(Enjoying my switch but Mario Kart can't come quick enough.)

Anyone enjoying the PuyoPuyo demo? It's really fun and find myself keep picking this up for a quick blast. Can't wait for this to be released so I can play online.

Yeah, played it when it was on the Jap eShop. Will wait for a price drop before I make a purchase. XBox One and PS4 versions are £19.99 so I am waiting for abit longer.

Games seem to be slowly picking up. Now I've finished Zelda I might pick up Mr Shifty and world of goo which Ive never played before. Wonderboy is out the 18th as well which looks interesting.

I'm tempted by Wonderboy too. Loved it back in the day. World of Goo is good btw. Well suited to a handheld.

Got some playtime on my old C64! Think I will give world of goo a try then to pass some time and maybe Mr Shifty. I'll probs pick up MK8 even though Im not really into it just to try and justify keeping the Switch. I really want to play I am Setsuna as Ive never played it before but £30 sticks in my throat a little.

I will pick up Rayman Legends again it'll be great on the Switch. Mr Shifty looks cool but i am terrible at these games! I found Hotline Miami quite hard. Loads of good looking things coming. I've never played Splatoon but that looks great. New Sonic looks good. Not into Minecraft i just CBA with it. It's all looking very positive so far.

Here's the reason for that:

According to that, the average WiiU owner has 7 games and the average 3DS owner has 5 games... anyhow, sales of older systems are besides the point. Not like they're going to sell many more new 3DS, when now people will look and see there's something much better on the market (i.e. Switch).

If games were only developed based on installbase, then kiss the Switch goodbye. It's only just released so not that many will have it and by that logic... nobody will bother developing for it. It's a chicken and egg situation. Games need to come to the system so that the system can sell, you can't exactly sell a system without games on it for games to then be dveloped for it (based on installbase).

I think there are way too many 3ds games.

Agreed, any games now releasing on 3DS has to compete with existing titles. Of which there are many, of which there are a lot of good ones. I own the 3DS and not the Switch... even I would prefer more games on Switch than the 3DS right now (so then I'd have more reason to buy a Switch), instead of more games on a system I already own (sounds like madness I know). Not to mention a good many popular Nintendo-published (I guess AAA) games run terribly on 3DS *cough* Pokemon *cough*.

I'm not saying Nintendo should automatically shift the focus onto the Switch and completely disregard the 3DS, that would be bad business to give up the countless millions who have already invested in the 3DS.
What they need to do is make the transition and make the Switch their priority, perhaps clearly underline this is THE replacement for both WiiU and 3DS so everyone knows their strategy. If they decide to keep Switch and 3DS going in tandem they may as well just give up on home consoles and solely develop handheld consoles, that said keeping both systems alive long term for me would be bad business. Switch has to clearly be their mantle and not a gimmicky console like what the Wiis felt like.

Exactly. For the Switch to succeed, they need to focus on it more or it ends up like WiiU all over again.

Saying that though, seems a lot of parents shell out on expensive phones for their kids anyway so who knows! :)

Oh tell me about it... (someone I know felt a PC was 'too expensive' of a birthday present, so they bought their teenager who already had a smartphone, a flagship phone...) Spending time in the GPU section of the forums and even this very thread I've learnt one thing:

Price doesn't matter, people will buy it anyway if they have the money (I thought Switch accessories were a ripoff, on the contrary they seem to be very popular).

So the 'too expensive for parents to buy their kids' argument doesn't exactly work, especially if parents are buying their kids overpriced smartphones.

The higher software attach rate on the Wii U is partly down to Nintendo Land and other games like Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon being bundled as standard.

Do you really think that if it had been the other way around, i.e. Wii U had sold 65M and 3DS 13M, that they wouldn't continue giving the Wii U some prolonged support right now?

I find the notion that 3DS development should be dropped quite ludicrous tbh. It's not like completely stopping 3DS development is going to mean we see a bunch more Switch games instead, that's just not how game development works.

If games were only developed based on installbase, then kiss the Switch goodbye.

Huh?, we don't know exactly how healthy Switch's install base will be down the line yet. It's way to early to be factoring install base, especially with the system still selling out in many places. It's not like games just magically disappear a few weeks after release either, they continue to sell for years. You also need to consider that less software means less competition to market and sell software on the system, so there is some incentive there for developers to get on board. The Switch is still very new though, from both a commercial and development standpoint.

And for a system that's apparently "without games", Switch seems to be doing quite well so far, so I guess there are games... or something.

Also, I think you're grossly overestimating the number of parents buying their kids the latest smartphones.

I didn't say anyone did either, just stressing an extreme for emphasis.

I just mean that fewer 3DS developed games wouldn't necessarily result in many more Switch games.

REDMOND, Wash., April 13, 2017 – Nintendo Switch, the new home gaming system that people can also take on the go, has sold faster in its launch month than any other video game system in Nintendo history. The Nintendo Switch system sold more than 906,000 units in March, according to the NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. That makes Nintendo Switch one of the fastest-selling video game systems of all time. Notably, this sales surge was accomplished in a nontraditional month for a console launch.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild game sold over 1.3 million units*. That total includes more than 925,000 units sold for Nintendo Switch and nearly 460,000 units sold for the Wii U console. That means that Nintendo sold more of this game for Nintendo Switch than it sold Nintendo Switch systems, for an attach rate of more than 100 percent. This may be attributed to people who purchased both a limited edition of the game to collect and a second version to play.

This was all enough to make The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild the fastest-selling Nintendo launch game of all time, as well as the fastest-selling game ever in The Legend of Zelda series.

“Nintendo always strives to offer consumers something fun, new and different,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s President and COO. “With its various play modes and the innovative features of the Joy-Con controllers, Nintendo Switch provides unique experiences that people can take with them anywhere and share with anyone.”

While Nintendo Switch sales are off to a record-breaking start, shipments have not yet been able to keep up with such high demand. Nintendo is working to make sure everyone who wants a system is able to buy one, and more systems are continually being shipped. In just over two weeks, the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe game will launch for Nintendo Switch on April 28 with more content than any other Mario Kart game in series history, including 48 racing tracks, new Battle modes, new characters and other additions. Competition on Nintendo Switch gets even hotter heading into summer, with the release of the ARMS game on June 16 and the Splatoon 2 game on July 21.

A full accounting of worldwide Nintendo Switch sales, as well as other financial information, will be provided on April 27, when Nintendo issues its fiscal-year earnings release. For more information, keep an eye on Nintendo’s investor relations page at https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en.

*Data regarding physical sales of games are from the NPD Group. Data regarding digital downloads of games and combined physical/digital life-to-date numbers are from Nintendo’s internal sales figures. All numbers, unless otherwise stated, are specific to the United States only.

Great news for Nintendo and for all of us, really. That Zelda attach rate.

According to the direct this week there is now gonna be a game released on average ever 1.5 weeks between now and E3. This is just including the games from direct. Let alone any other Nindies and games which come along.

Granted if nothing coming out interests you then that's a shame. However the argument that "it's just a Zelda box" is becoming invalid pretty fast!

I find the notion that 3DS development should be dropped quite ludicrous tbh. It's not like completely stopping 3DS development is going to mean we see a bunch more Switch games instead, that's just not how game development works.

It depends on sales numbers for software really, you may have a nice amount of 3DS systems out there but if the sales figures don't reflect well i.e. a low attach rate then resource will be allocated to Switch.

It also depends on what Nintendo's end game here is, do they want to continue with 2 pillars or are they planning to Switch (pardon the pun) to 1? That's where I believe and want the ultimate goal to be.

Fire Emblem in 2018 on Switch is probably the first indication of the change of stance, I reckon 2017 will see the closing off period for 3DS in terms of the big 1st and 2nd party titles. You may well get the 3rd version of Pokémon Sun/Moon over on it, but if there's to be a next installment in the franchise which is fresh it'll be on Switch.

E3 will be our first true indication of what the future holds for both platforms and what direction Nintendo ultimately is going for.

Handheld Zelda errr sorry, Oceanhorn seen running on the Switch

Have to say I don't care if its a rip off of Zelda it looks like a cracking game :)

Shame the Switch's Bluetooth does not naturally work with BT ear/headphones, needs a BT transmitter connected to the 3.5mm jack socket.
