Using Link cable with V3 - Banding/artefacts in the home screen

While in the home screen of Oculus desktop app, looking at the mountain/grass landscape, I can see some horizontal banding if I move my head up and down slowly. Its faint, very easy not to notice but it's there if you look. Looks like dirt on the screen. I can't see it from within the home screen area of the quest without the link cable. I am still yet to check using VD wireless ....

Anyone notice this?

I experienced possibly the same thing while playing a game using Link one day last week, though it seems fine now. At the time my headset software had updated but the desktop software had not, I did wonder if that may have caused issues.

Just to confirm the official cable running through a dedicate USB3.1 should be between 2.6-3Gbps anything less and your likely to get stutter dependent on bit rate from my understanding.

thanks for that

when i played PCVR for the first time the other day (Hellblade VR) i got a little stutter on the odd occasion, but nothing to worry about, i just put it down to my CPU as its bottlenecked currently
upgrading next year to a 5x cpu so should sort it out

Well, it has arrived. It is identical to the one I've just returned. Identical apart from the price, imagery, title, description on Amazon.

But also identical in that it doesnt work. I'm running out of ideas now. I think I need to see that USB expansion card working properly at the intended speed by using a USB 3 flash drive (which I dont own). Then at least I can rule that out being the issue.

driver issue ?

what is your motherboard?

Cant be the cables if this many are not working. What card is it?

This is what I am suspecting now. I've tried both of the following cards, admitedly cheap and Chinese:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B089ZRXTVZ/
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B074TGDN46/

Know of any alternatives?

I've tried with inbuilt Windows 10 drivers and with the 'proper' ones for one fo the cards. No luck with either. It's an ancient Asus P6T.

I get a wonderful message when I plug into to any of the "USB 3" ports :D

According to asus website the p6t is usb 2.0 only. What usb 3.0 cards do you have?

That motherboard only supports USB 2

soi your adding a PCIe controller, i do not know if adding a usb 3 controller to a usb 2 motherboard will work or not, but id recommend the Silverstone ones

This may help.

Awesome, cheers all! :D

I'll do some reading and watching!

Am i the only one that is concerned that ironically because the Quest2 is so capable, that it is going to further inhibit development of AAA PCVR games ?

If as expected, Q2 helps to really kick-start VR, developers will want their game to be available to as many headset owners as possible. They will therefore need to target standalone quest. Yes, Oculus appears to be putting some effort into Link, but the majority of Q2 owners won't have the knowhow and a lot wont have the PC power to make quest PCVR targettable.

So Whereas the Q1 was able to take advantage of games targetted for the cabled rift etc, with that one dying, its' likely Q2 will become by far the most popular headset out there, and AAA developers won't want to limit their target audience by designing a game that requires a PC. Yes, they may do two versions, however anytime a design decsion is made, it will be made on the basis of "this also has to work on the standalong version", which would be a severe constriction on design freedom.

For example, where we are now, if people were sitting down to develop half-life Alyx, does it get made on the basis that it is PCVR only, I dont think so.

So my Quest 2 arrived today and I've been having a banger time trying to adjust everything, ha.

No Man's Sky VR was nice, but Skyrim VR actually made me a bit dizzy with the movement and stuff.
I'll need to try beatsabers and such games.

For me, small numbers didn't stop VR games getting made before, so whilst there may be a better platform, I don't think it will kill PCVR, it may not grow it a great deal, but I don't think harm will be done. I suspect long term it will help it, as the more people who have headsets, the greater the market regardless.

you need to start small

dont go for intense if you've never used VR
you need to gradually get into it
im ok doing intense now, but im still limiting time and more intense stuff

Not sure its that much harder to make them standalone, its basically just turning the settings down a lot for Quest 2. :p

Could I ask a few questions of the Q2 owners? I have not yet owned my own VR headset, and was planning to go high-end with the likes of the Reverb G2 and Index but currently feel that neither tick enough boxes to spend £650-£1,000.

The 64GB Q2 is very affordable and readily available, and feels like a good starter VR experience. My questions are as follows:

1) I plan on mainly playing PCVR, and have a beefy enough PC to do it (i9700k, 2080S). If I don't know if I have USB 3.0 (mobo is Gigabyte Aorus bought Dec 2018, but don't know model), do I need to buy the expensive PC cable? I find all this discussion confusing sorry.

2) Is the 64GB model sufficient if I plan on playing mainly PCVR? I'm sure I will play some non-PC games, but probably not many.

3) Is the Elite headstrap essential in order to enjoy it?

4) Combing the above 3 questions, there is a big difference in price between getting the 64GB model and getting the 256GB model, the Elite strap, and the expensive PC cable (extra £200+). The latter starts to move the price close to the Reverb G2, which makes things difficult to evaluate. Any thoughts?

5) Finally, how does the Q2 stack up to the Index etc. In terms of general usability, fun, and the overall VR experience? Did you wish you paid extra fr Index etc., or is this still light years ahead of the PSVR and HTC Vive (being only headsets I've ever tried).

Thanks all in advance.
