******Official Star Citizen / Squadron 42 Thread******

I had a play during the Free to Fly time.
Have to say that I was a little underwhelmed. For one thing, graphics in some of the newer and upcoming games are really moving forward again (eg the Unreal 5 demos).
A couple of years ago, SC looked bleeding edge. Now, looking far more “the norm” and with the speed of release, I could see it being well overtaken.

Thoughts?

Here is my thoughts:

TDLR: i personally aint seen a game that looks as good as this at a similar scale and that includes UE5 stuff that has been shown.

Dont get me wrong,, UE5 looks good but its not at the scale as this game.

Its more achievable to create photo realistic graphics in say a hotel room(even the UE4 demo of a room looked amazing) but you need to take into consideration the scale and detail of the whole game

Maybe, it depends on where you go, some parts of the game, ArcCorp and Hurston for example, are much older than other parts, New Babbage and Orison, Area 18 looks a little dated while Orison, especially the up coming dynamic event platforms look amazing, and they are huge.

And then there's Pyro, which is on yet another level.

Overall Star Citizen still looks leading edge, and the criticism that that the game is getting old and is starting to look old to me doesn't hold true, sure as i said some parts of it do, but they are already talking about upgrading those parts of the game, certainly they have said they will be completely redoing ArcCorp at some point.

And that's the thing, CIG are constantly updating and upgrading.

Also, Star Citizen is on an entirly different scale to other games, the reason why games like No Mans Sky are cartoon like and ED graphics are a bit 2008 is because its extremely difficult to get AAA graphics in a game on this scale.

Some eye candy. even these have since been upgraded.

And a Pyro preview.

I get that some things may need to be reworked before the game launches but......... Surely it would be better to press on with the new stuff, and then have an over all quality pass over all of the older systems in one go once the game is closer to release...

otherwise 4 years from now the rework may need a re-rework!.

seems still be be an inefficient use of dev time as well as money.

Different teams work on different things, its not really a case of having to rework this and that is slowing down development, with so many different segments being worked on one team is always waiting on another, for example we can't get Pyro and Nyx until the engineers have figured out server meshing.

The graphics team and artists are done with Nyx and Pyro and they have 6 months where they are not needed, that's time they can use to go back over old assets and update them.

Just a comment on UE5, Unreal Engine has always looked good, its a little bit plastic for my taste, it has a very slightly weird laminated quality to it, its not quite photo realistic unless you get in to territory when you can't render it in real time anyway, the city demo looks good, i don't think it looks ground breaking, and performance is horendious.

I think Star Engine, i'm quite happy to call it that, it is Cryengine but its so far modified its unrecognisable as that, is capable of generating a CGI like image in real time more so than Unreal Engine, but Unreal Engine is much better at generating an image for CGI, if that makes any sense? So for games i think Star Engine is capable of a better image in real time while Unreal Engine is capable of a better image.

This is entirely in engine, a 3080 could render this real time at easily playable frame rates.

Part of the update is to allow better traversal of more players and NPCs as they expand in future years they stated. This was something discussed years back when they first introduced Lorville and said they would add more habitation locations and such.

Pushing tech in a location that exists to test is still useful. It specifically allows for updates to cities better and more efficient. Out of the 100+ systems there is meant to be 50 cities ish. So working on tech is stepping stone on the 4 or so cities now makes sense.

Re: Graphics discussion. I think Star Citizen manages to look both fantastic or a bit shoddy, depending on where you look. When you catch it at it's best, it's stunning: The scale of the environments, the detail in the well polished areas, the lighting dealing with the change of sunlight or headlamps. This is let down at times by poor framerate, and other times by animations or objects moving in unnatural ways that just look a bit janky. Hopefully that'll improve in time. Likewise areas of the game, or ships, that were made a long time ago that need the polish passes can look a bit rough around the edges at times.

Just wish the game ran better than it does so I could enjoy the looks of the cities some more!

Ironically hangars use to be one of the best places to check out ships etc because you got an absolutely solid FPS in them. Hopefully they will be back soon.

They did also have some of the worse graphics in them via the subscriber flair though, some of which have 90s style textures.

Big question though, should I keep my MSR or drop down to a 400i? I'll need to test fly one. I like the MCR but can't fly the damn thing to save myself. Might end up just unmelting a Cutlass.

The 400i is nice but useless, the cargo hold isn't even big enough to hold a ROC, keep the MSR its far more useful, the drive in cargo hold can hold an Ursa Rover, a Cyclone and a ROC at the same time.

Have been playing a bit with the FreeFly and enjoying it. Although I've spent almost all my time ground side exploring the expo or working out how things work. The first 2, 3 days were almost unplayable. :)

I'm a bit disappointed with the UI though. It's feels dated with important information hidden away, dead space etc. I might just be too used to other games which put all relevant information on screen in a customisable way. Things like the SelfStatus screen, kinda wish I could at least zoom in on the ship model. Or just have the info on bars on the hud. Ship acceleration time also seems a bit off. Most of the ships I've tried (for hardly any time at all) didn't feel that different.

Didn't expect the game to be so cpu bound the game, have to wonder how well they'll be able to optimise things.

Have to say I'm tempted to throw some money at it and grab the Titan package.

Anyone have a guess on if the extra 5k creds you get for using a referral code will be worthwhile? ie worth deleting the account to sign up with a code.

Its enough to get you a couple of FPS weapons, its better than nothing, you can earn that much doing a single basic mission or two.

IMO 25K would be better, 5K is very legacy, the game has come a long way since that started.
